A

Note From The Publisher The Season For Living Through Giving

s 2016 comes to a close, the holiday rush is just beginning. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably running around searching for the perfect gift for everyone in your family, spending time and money on the perfect décor, and stressing over meals to please everyone. I often find myself questioning if all the stress is worth it. I forget what this season is really about. I forget that this time of year means so much more than the amount of money we spend or what décor decks our halls, if any. It’s about the family that travels from out of state to spend time with us, it’s about reflection over a year’s worth of effort and work, and it’s about thoughtfulness, family and giving to those who are less fortunate. All of these things get lost in the rush and although we hear it all the time, do we really remember that this is the season for giving? I’m just a bad as the next person, spending huge amounts of time and money to appear perfect when really all I want to do is pull on some sweatpants and stare at the wall. So, this holiday season I am making a conscious effort to enjoy my family and spend less time doing dishes and more time laughing and having fun. In this world of instant gratification, I lose sight of the things that can’t be ordered and delivered to my door in two days or less. With all the strife in the world today, I truly believe that everyone could use a little time to just be themselves. The world is not going to ground to a halt and stop spinning if we take a day off from it all. December is a full month for everyone. For me, I am wrapping up our final plans for Winter Celebration on December 10, finishing up the January edition of Welcome

Home, and looking forward to the week off between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Winter Celebration is a year’s worth of work come to life in a five-hour time span. The amount of community involvement and the people who put so much effort into this cause is a true reminder of what this time of year is truly about. I would like to thank the Welcome Home staff for dealing with the insane amounts of stress; Jennifer Meachum with North Central Baptist Hospital for her support and dedication to our cause, Living Through Giving; Wendy Nave and her team with Outside the Box Productions; the community for their support for the last 14 years; and last but not least Russell Groomer for his constant stream of encouragement and for believing in the cause no matter the cost. Without these people, Winter Celebration would simply not be possible. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you. The next time we chat, 2017 will be upon us! So for each of you I wish a truly happy holiday season with friends and family and lots of hot chocolate…and maybe some wine.

ecember is here! 2016 is nearly over, but not before its time to celebrate one of the most wonderful times of the year. There are so many ways to get into the holiday spirit within in the next few weeks and if you’re looking for a local event for the family, look no further than Stone Oak Winter Celebration on December 10! Each year, thousands of families from across San Antonio gather to enjoy filled with fun, rides, food, vendors – and of course, Santa! Santa and Mrs. Clause will be arriving at Winter Celebration (located in the parking lot across from North Central Baptist Hospital) via San Antonio AirLIFE! It’s always wonderful to see the children’s smiling faces as Santa makes his grand entrance, descending via helicopter from the sky! The little ones are also invited to sit on Santa’s lap for free photo. Perhaps one of the biggest attractions is the 60,000 pounds of real snow Santa brings straight from the North Pole. It’s not often San Antonio gets to enjoy a winter wonderland, so take advantage! There will even be downhill sledding for all to enjoy! To enjoy this day of fun, just bring a new,

unwrapped toy to donate to Living Through Giving, a non-profit organization that supports local children advocacy groups across Bexar County. Every child deserves to enjoy the magic of Christmas morning, unwrapping gifts under the tree, but it’s not a reality for far too many. Living Through Giving is working to make a difference in the lives of these children and bring a smile to their face this holiday season. Here’s hoping that you and yours enjoy a wonderful Christmas, Hanukkah, or whatever holiday you may celebrate as we say farewell to 2016 – here’s to a New Year!

Expert Hormone Replacement Therapy

By Donna Becker, D.O. Enhancement of Life (210) 545-5224 have hundreds, HUNDREDS, of published medical studies supporting hormone replacement therapy. In addition, I have devoted the last 10 years to providing expert hormone replacement therapy to all persons whose hormones have declined as a result of normal aging. Merriam-Webster defines the word “expert” as having, involving, or displaying special skill or knowledge derived from training or experience. I attend a minimum of two seminars related to hormone replacement therapy in person (as opposed to online) per year, and in past years, I’ve exceeded that number. I have also taken tests, certifications and reviewed other formal studies. I have listened to other specialists in this particular field speak, and on more than occasion, I’ve stood in line to ask questions

I

of experts like Dr. Morgantaler, a Harvard Urologist and author of “Testosterone for Life;” Dr. Barry Sears who conducted original research on the benefits of Omega-3 Fish Oil; Dr. Teitelbaum, author of “From Fatigued to Fantastic” and publisher of the first ever treatment of chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia; Dr. Rouzier, a specialist in hormone replacement since 1997; and many more. When patients tell me about the treatment they have received from other doctors when they request hormone replacement therapy, I’m shocked and offended. I’ve even heard of pharmacists ordering a “spit” test, where the patient, or in my opinion, the victim, is asked to produce saliva in a cup to supposedly measure hormone levels. Recently, a very sweet woman in her early 60s came to see me. She told me that that

since she had moved and was no longer a patient of her regular hormone prescribing doctor, she had been given wrong, crazy, and misleading recommendations. “Can you help me?” she asked, during her free 15-minute consultation. This particular patient had already been to see three other gynecologists. After prolonged waiting room times (in one case exceeding two hours), the doctor told her that hormones would kill her and that she should throw away her remaining supply prescribed by her previous doctor. The next gynecologist referred her to a pharmacist for treatment. Her last doctor’s assistant began to write her a prescription with no examination and no blood work. An estradiol patch and prometrium prescriptions were handed to her with the following explanation, “We give this to all our patients who want to take hormones. They work just fine!” I told her that I was sorry for what she had been through. I quickly explained my process which entails three pages of detailed blood work with line-by-line explanation. For me, it’s not just about hormones, it’s about anti-aging. I check vitamin levels, markers for Alzheimer’s disease and inflammation. I then recommend a

comprehensive plan involving not just hormones, but nutrition, exercise, and key supplements, even brain training, to get you back to fully functioning. Hormone replacement therapy is about quality of life. True, you will not die if you don’t receive hormones for your severe menopausal symptoms of insomnia, hot flashes, and weight gain, but you will suffer. And yes, there are side effects to everything we do or do not do. There are published studies linking hormone replacement therapy to cancer, blood clots, heart attacks, and stroke. However, there are also studies which support the use of estradiol specifically, and other hormones, to protect the brain, bones, and mental state. Not everyone needs hormone replacement therapy as they age, it is a choice. Blood levels guide this decision and therapy - not opinion, not guess work, and not a blanket approach for every patient. The Importance Of Winter Vehicle Maintenance

W

By Rusty Belden, President Belden’s Automotive & Tires (210) 494-0017

inter is here and although your first instinct may be to wrap up in a warm blanket by the fire, you really should be thinking about the impact cold weather can have on your vehicle and the importance of proper maintenance. Without the heating systems in today’s modern vehicles, we would all be quite miserable during our daily commute. It’s easy to take for granted the heat in our vehicle that keeps us warm each winter, but without proper protection and maintenance our vehicles would be unable to protect us from cold weather. Here are some important facts to keep in mind this season:

1 - Your radiator is of the upmost importance in the winter months. The radiator helps the engine stay at a proper temperature, regardless of the temperature outside. Always make sure your vehicles coolant is properly filled, otherwise your engine could freeze during the worst of dipping temperatures. 2 - Vehicle batteries can have trouble starting during extreme temperatures. Check the batteries terminals to make sure there is no rust or corrosion. If you have an older battery and the temperatures are dipping, get your battery tested and replace it if it is not in good working order.

Caring For Your Deck & Patio

B

By Barry Hagendorf Deck & Patio Care (210) 822-9147

arry Hagendorf, the leading authority on deck and patio care in South Texas, has been cleaning and sealing decks for more than 20 years. Q: Why does my wooden deck look so

bad? A: According to Architectural Digest, unprotected wood only lasts for 9-14 years. I recommend that you clean the wood on your deck and seal it with an oil-based penetrating sealer. Q: What sealer would you recommend? A: My preference, after years of trial and error research, is Barry Premium Blend oil-

3 - As temperatures rise and fall throughout the day, so does the air pressure in your tires. Tires tend to lose more air in the cold, wintry months. Check your tires during the first cold snap and make sure they are in a range suggested by the manufacturer. This will ensure that your tires always make good contact with the road surface and help ward off uneven wear. Make it a point to make time for your vehicle during this winter. In addition to all of the tips mentioned above, don’t forget about your windshield wipers! It is important to replace worn wiper blades regularly to maintain good visibility. Proper maintenance can help ensure you and your vehicle don’t get caught out in the cold. Don’t forget, you can always call Belden’s Automotive & Tires, our family is here to help! Look us up online at beldensautomotive.com for money saving coupons. Buckle up, Drive Safe and Remember at Belden’s Automotive & Tires, “We Keep You Rolling!” Belden’s Automotive & Tires has six based penetrating sealer that is designed to look for dry cell structure in the wood. It will penetrate first to the bottom of the cracks, nail holes, and knots. Barry’s Premium Blend will protect from the surface down, stabilizing the cell structure of the wood. Q: What care should I give to my pebblestone? A: On new and older pebblestone, first acid wash the film of concrete off the rocks. Then, oxidize the surface to kill mold and mildew. Last, seal the stone to its natural wet look. Q: Why are the rocks from my

Buckner Fanning School Teams Up With Fisher House Submitted By Lindsay McGrath few months ago, students at Buckner Fanning School at Mission Springs were hard at work, brainstorming to find a community service project that they could do together, as a school. The ideas generated were truly exceptional and ranged in complexity and breadth. After the students considered all of the ideas, thinking them through end to end, the decision was made to support The South Texas Veterans Fisher House! The Fisher House is an amazing organization that provides complimentary housing for families of active military and veterans while they are receiving medical treatment. Since opening the first Fisher House in 1991, they have helped over 277,000 families and provided six million days of lodging. There are now 71 Fisher Houses across the United States, eight of

A

which are right here in San Antonio. While the Fisher House is able to provide very comfortable accommodations and some basic needs, the guests are still far from the comforts of their own home, missing out on regularly home-cooked meals and festivities of the holidays. The BFSMS students decided they wanted to help fill in these gaps. The students named their effort Operation Homefront which will provide monthly home cooked dinners to guests of the VA Fisher House, along with Operation Santa’s Combat Boots, where students will decorate the outdoor area of the house, deliver gift baskets, and organize a holiday party to help guests feel relaxed and enjoy the true spirit of the holidays! This is all made possible through a grant from Silver & Black Give Back. BFSMS students are incredibly excited

to roll out their effort and give back to those who have sacrificed so much for our country and our freedom! They know that this is the start of a great partnership and would like to

thank The Fisher House and Silver & Black Give Back for making this community service project possible.

Proper Diagnosis, Treatment And Strength To Overcome

n meeting with Kristen Latronico, you would never know the challenges she has had to face. Kristen has a positive energy and smile that won’t stop. She loves to sing and is a proud mother of a three-yearold daughter and an almost 11-year-old son. In 2014, she was referred to Dr. Gilliam by her primary care physician for a raspy voice that wouldn’t resolve. After putting it off due to other family health issues, she finally made the appointment and had an endoscopy done in the office. On Friday, September 5, a biopsy was taken and on the following Tuesday, Kristen received a call from Dr. Gilliam confirming her initial suspicion that she had cancer. Kristen said Dr. Gilliam was “spot on” when she looked at the endoscopy that Friday. “She just knew,” said Kristen. Dr. Gilliam gave Kristen the facts of her diagnosis with compassion in an optimistic manner. She was in this fight with her and

Kristen knew that. Kristen’s first reaction, once the shock wore off, was “why me?” “I’ve never smoked,” she said. “No drugs. No history of cancer in my family. My vocal cords? I’ve never even heard of that! My worst feeling was that now my children have to check that box for family history of cancer.” It took a team of doctors, 29 rounds of radiation, and three surgeries to repair the damage from the cancer and radiation treatments. But due to her accurate diagnosis and treatments, Kristen was able to run in two Oral Cancer Awareness runs as a survivor in 2015 and 2016. When she showed up for the race and saw that Dr. Gilliam was also participating in the run, she was amazed. “It spoke volumes to her involvement and her staff’s involvement for awareness to a cause that I had never even thought about before,” said Kristen. In 2016, Dr. Gilliam and her staff again

participated in the run. “It gave me a boost, comfort, confidence and support,” stated Kristen. Kristen’s fight against cancer is not over; she has developed a thyroid nodule which is carefully being monitored. When asked what message she wanted to convey to others, she had a clear statement. “See your doctor regularly, do the screenings they recommend, and don’t put your health off,” she said. “You are NEVER Dr. Gilliam’s patient at Everyone’s ENT, Kristen Latronico, an oral cancer survivor ready to hear those words, and mother of two. but if it does happen, fight! Learning From Those Who’ve Been There, Done That Submitted By Ethan Trout, Brookdale Senior Living Solutions f were to ask my boys “What is the easiest lesson to learn?” they will immediately respond with “The one you learn from someone else’s mistake.” The speed and certainty of their response comes from how many times I’ve shared this truth with them. They know that learning from someone else’s mistake is like hitching a ride – you get further down the road without having to pay for the gas. (Side note: It’s just an analogy. I don’t encourage my sons to hitchhike). As someone who works around seniors every day, I’m surrounded by people who have made their fair share of mistakes. They’ve extended their feet, filled with hope that they were beginning a promising journey, only to have the coffee table of life bruise their toes. They’ve had their ups and downs. They’ve amazed people with their accomplishments and disappointed those around them – sometimes in the same day. In short, they’re just like us – except they’ve had more. More good, more bad – more life.

I

So with all of the challenges of modern life – why, why would we not seek the counsel of those who have gone before us? It has been said, “There is nothing new under the sun.” And no matter how smart our phones, watches or TVs are, we’re still human. We’re still trying to do better than yesterday. The latest gadget shouldn’t blind us to the fact that our parents and grandparents have faced what we’ve faced and lived to tell about it. So I want to encourage you to do something a little different this holiday season. As you gather around the table, when the sights and sounds of the season surround you – slow down and look at the older ones among you with a fresh perspective. They were once just like you. They’ve made lots of mistakes, which means they’ve got lots of lessons to share. Not only will you probably learn something, you will make them feel needed and useful. And if you can give that gift to just one person this season – well you just might need to start looking for a big red suit and some reindeer.

Realtors “Lending” Mesa Vista Celebrates Insight To Home Buyers Halloween With Pot-Luck Dinner

By Bill Barkley River Valley Real Estate (210) 853-5327 hen looking to purchase a home you will need certain professionals to assist you with the process, like a Realtor. A Realtor is important, and one should be working with you from beginning to end, helping to provide information based on their experience with title companies, general property inspectors, pest inspectors, contractors, surveyors, insurance companies, engineers and lenders. In today’s real estate market, there is one provider a Realtor can help recommend that I deem as of the utmost importance - a lender. A lender can either make the entire process of purchasing a home smooth and painless, or a headache from start to finish. Lenders will state that the home buying process is very dependent upon the purchaser and their ability to provide the information requested in a timely manner. While this is true and correct, just like all professionals, every lender is not equal. I have had many positive experiences with lenders where I happily applauded their efforts. Our transaction was seamless, and we were all well informed from the beginning until closing. Other times, I have had to constantly remind the lender of the closing date, and other requirements needing to be met to satisfy certain contractual timelines. A common misconception is that

Submitted By Risa Weinberger or the past 18 years, the Mesa Vista neighborhood has come together every Halloween weekend for trick-ortreating followed by an annual neighborhood pot-luck dinner. This year, the festivities were held on Saturday, October 29. Children and families throughout the neighborhood enjoyed visiting each other’s houses and trick-ortreating for Halloween sweets. After all of the candy was passed out, families and friends gathered at the west cul-de-sac for a potluck dinner and movies projected onto a neighbor’s garage door. your regular bank is the best option for your home loan. This seems like a very reasonable assumption because you are already a loyal customer and the lender has previous knowledge of your financial status. However, that lender may not make mortgage lending a priority of their banking business. I recommend, as most Realtors do, to start your home buying process with a discussion about lenders with your Realtor. Allow them to provide you with several choices, and interview your options. Having a lender whose priority is closing mortgage home loans will make the process a much more pleasant experience.

ears ago, all you needed was a store full of liquor in a decent location and you were set. But today you need so much more than just a good location & a decent selection in order to have a successful liquor store – you need outstanding customer service which creates a pleased & confident costumer. As a 27-year veteran in the beverage industry, I have learned a variety of customer service techniques, giving me the opportunity to keep my customers happy in today’s market. Some of what keeps customers coming back to Rodry Liquor is that we provide exceptional customer service by showing that we care about the customer’s needs. Consumer trust and loyalty grow when the costumer feels confident. Based on my personal experience in the retail business, customers will remember the little things that small businesses have to offer, that larger retailers may not. Another reason for customers returning to our store are the deals that they may not find elsewhere, such as our “Customer Loyalty Program”. As the owner of Rodry Liquor, located at 18720 Stone Oak parkway, I have made it a priority to carry everything that our

customers may need, such as drink mixers and accessories. I find that a successful liquor store knows popular cocktail recipes; therefore, it is essential that the necessary ingredients be available for purchase in one convenient location. But Rodry Liquor doesn’t stop there! We also share recipes with our customers, and based on the customer’s purchase or drink of choice, we can recommend alternative drinks that they may also enjoy, giving us the opportunity to introduce new drinks & products to keep the costumer more than satisfied. Rodry Liquor has a great selection of spirits, wine & beer. We make every effort to make sure we carry what the customer desires. We also welcome special requests & orders. We understand that this is a great way to establish a meaningful rapport with our customers, and we go above & beyond to exceed customers’ expectations. Come on in & see what Rodry Liquor has to offer. We look forward to serving you, San Antonio!!

Wilderness Oak Walks To School

Submitted By Rachel Robertson n October 5, Wilderness Oak Elementary students participated in National Walk to School Day. Communities and schools use Walk to School Day as the first step to change community culture and to create options for getting around that are more inviting for everyone, both young and old. The trip to school is also a chance for children and adults to get the physical activity the need while replacing car trips and reducing congestion and air-polluting emissions. Over 100 children walked to school on the beautiful fall morning. H-E-B graciously donated water, apples and oranges for the kids to enjoy as healthy snacks. Wilderness Oak’s own Healthy Lifestyles branch of the PTA plans to continue organizing events like Walk to School Day to promote healthy living and activity among Wilderness Oak students and the community. A healthy body is an active body!

When the Saints Go Marching In

Submitted By Mary Delaney ne program unique to Holy Spirit Catholic School is their “mass buddy” program. Beginning in late September, students in grades 5-8 were paired with students in lower grades in order to encourage the formation of a very special bond. The pairs not only sit together during mass every week, but also participate in activities with their mass buddy throughout the year. One particular project took place on All Saints Day in October. Seventh graders met weekly with their first grade buddy to pick a saint, take measurements for their costumes, and researching their chosen saint. After practices and rehearsals were complete, the day finally has finally arrived. The school community and parents were all in attendance at mass on November 2 to witness their “saintly” son or daughter process in, donning a costume which emulated the clothing their saint might have worn. The young saints walked down the aisle, pausing for the cameras. After mass was over, the saints and their buddies made their way back up to the front of the church, stopping below the altar to read a short description of their saint, after which the assembly was instructed to respond with “Pray for Us.” Once all of the saints had the opportunity to introduce themselves, they weaved their way toward the back of the church. At this time, music began playing, allowing the crowd of proud parents, grandparents, and the rest of the school to get one final glimpse of this special group. Together, with their buddy by their side, the saints proceeded up the aisle as the song “The Saints Go Marching In” played in the background. Although the formal presentation is over, the project will not be complete until the seventh graders finish and present a handmade book about their chosen saint to the first graders later this semester. Mrs. Emily Garza, a new first grade teacher to Holy Spirit and current parent of two middle schoolers, was very pleased with the seventh graders participation in the special

project. “It’s really neat because our first graders get to keep the costumes that the seventh graders and their parents made,” she said. Collages of past All Saints Day celebrations adorn the hallways of Holy Spirit, so that all can see the friendships and bonds formed at Holy Spirit Catholic School.

Meet San Antonio’s Young Harpists Submitted By Alice Spero Keene an Antonio harp students of professional harpist and teacher Alice Spero Keene, gathered for the Fall 2016 Studio Class on September 24. The talented students from various schools across NISD and NEISD performed for one another in this unique studio class environment. They were able to demonstrate their progress and perform for a safe audience in a “second chance” environment where they could start and stop as needed in order to improve. In addition to performing for one another, students gathered to discuss their fall school semester orchestra assignments. The studio class also included guidelines for technique improvement and better mental focus while practicing and performing. Keene’s harp students attend the following schools: Kathryn Horton: Lopez Middle School, Honors Orchestra Jocelyn Epstein: Reagan High School, Chamber Orchestra Isabella Lorente: Reagan High School, Chamber Orchestra Samantha Levenhager: Concordia Lutheran School. Hardy Oak Happenings

Submitted By Kerri Johnson ctober proved to be a very productive month for Hardy Oak students! The first event of the month, “Walk to School Week,” brought awareness to health and fitness while showing how we can all do our part to reduce pollution. Several faculty and staff members met Hardy Oak students and their parents at the H-E-B parking lot and walked the half mile to campus together. It was a nice change of pace to see a pedestrian jam on the sidewalk rather than a traffic jam on the street. Way to go Hornets! Next on the agenda was the Annual Bike Rodeo where students were able to demonstrate bike safety while showing off their cycling skills. Hardy Oak special needs students even organized a bike wash to congratulate the participants as they finished the course! In addition, ALE students participated in North East ISD Special Olympics Bowling and represented Hardy Oak wonderfully! The entire school community is so proud of them. TO show their support, the whole Hardy Oak student body greeted the ALE students in the parking lot to show their support. This fall, Hardy Oak students also honored the 2016 Red Ribbon Theme: “YOLO (You Only Live Once) Be Drug Free.” Students dressed up, entered a photo contest and even attended a special assembly featuring Robert “Skywalker” Wallace, a former Harlem Globe Trotter. The Hornets learned how to keep their bodies healthy by always remaining DRUG FREE! On October 28, Hardy Oak’s Fall Festival and Silent Auction also took place. Families

and the entire Hardy Oak community united for fun, food and fellowship while raising money for the Hardy Oak PTA. The festival featured food trucks, carnival rides, games, and even a hula hoop contest for faculty and staff. The PTA met their membership goals and to celebrate, they duct taped PTA president Lisa Hartofelis and Principal Lola Folkes to the wall. They were such great sports. Hardy Oak closed out the fall season with a Campus Cleanup after the Fall Festival to give students an opportunity for PVSA hours. The Hardy Oak Hornets are busy at work every day, but still find time to have fun and support each other. Here’s looking forward to what the next months will hold!

K9 Corner By Catherine Laria K9 Country Club (830) 980-8476

Wagging Our Tails Into The New Year

A

nother year is in the books and K9 Country Club was able to put an exclamation point on their accomplishments! Owner Catherine Laria and her dog, Blizzard, kicked off the year by winning a spot on the Agility World Team, traveling to the Netherlands to represent the USA. The team would like to send a huge thank you to friends, family, clients, and the Bulverde Chamber for helping them raise money to attend. Mid-year, K9 Country Club

a l s o hired a new training director with a military K9 training background. K9 Country Club has expanded their portfolio to offer exciting new classes such as Scent Detection classes, Active Shooter Seminars, and Dog Aggression lessons rounded out with Canine Good Citizen, Clicker Trick, Obedience, and Rally Classes all taught by award winning instructors. K9 Country Club can offer solutions for every pet and owner of every level and need. Our level of Agility Training is unparalleled by any other training center in South Texas. All that being said, many people are

unsure about our country’s future. If you are feeling unsettled this holiday season, put aside your worry for a moment and focus on the furry face staring back at you. Remember why we have our pets and what they mean to us. Whether you and your dog are out and about, traveling the country, or just walking around the block nightly, dogs always show us unconditional love. Anyone who has left the house for fifteen minutes or up to seven hours and gets the same exuberant tail wagging, face-licking response when they return knows exactly what I am talking about. Imagine what this world would be like if we treated each other more with this kind of spirit. Our dogs motivate us to play, seek adventure, and move! What other creature has the capacity to protect you from a stranger and then turn around and comfort you when you are sad. We train them to sniff out bombs AND lead the blind! What an amazing animal. Your dogs may not be your whole life (like mine are) but they can

Tips To Keep School Year Productive By Steve Johnson, Owner of College Nannies + Sitters + Tutors he first couple months of a new school year provide opportunities for your family to form the best possible habits resulting in a productive year. Every child is different in their learning habits, so here are some ideas to try to keep each child going strong all year long. 1. Designate a time of day for homework: Establishing a routine ensures that your child knows when to work on their homework each day. Putting them to work after school will allow them to get their homework done quickly so they can still have time to play with friends or watch TV with the family. It will also prevent cramming at the end of the night. 2. Provide them with a planner. Give your student the option to use a scheduling planner to keep all their projects and assignments in order. They will be able to write down notes from the teacher about important dates, and they can color code assignment due dates, test days, or other significant school days. 3. Create a designated study room. The home can provide your children with many distractions. Creating a space away from the TV and other toys will allow the child to

focus on the project or assignment needing completion. Decorate the space with school supplies and encouraging posters to promote a positive attitude towards studying. 4. Support strong time management. At the beginning of each week, sit down with your child and discuss the projects and homework they have been assigned for the week, and create a schedule for what should be worked on each day. This will prevent last minute scrambling and cramming, and will start a great pattern of managed study habits for future years of schooling. 5. Encourage your child to ask for help. Make sure your child knows when to ask for help. Assistance can come from other students, their teachers, tutors, or you as the parent. Letting them know it’s okay to ask for help early on will teach them seek out resources when they need help. Knowledge is power, and if they struggle in a specific subject, getting help when needed will benefit them in the long term. 6. Find out what works for your child. Does your child remember information more after writing it down, saying it out loud, or reviewing flashcards? Test out different options and encourage regular usage of the tactics that work for your child.

In October, Kinetic Kids celebrated their 15-year anniversary of providing sports and recreational programs to children and teens with special needs.

Submitted By Natalie Weiblen-Henry n October 22, Kinetic Kids celebrated 15 years of providing sports and recreational programs to children and teens with special needs. The celebration took place on the baseball fields at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) where Kinetic Kids all began. Baseball was the organization’s first sport in 2001. Phillip Scotty Mena, now 20 years old and one of the original Kinetic Kids, kicked off the momentous celebration with a wonderful rendition of the National Anthem. Kinetic Kids from all generations and their families came out to support the “homecoming” and wore Kinetic Kids mums with pride! Tracey Fontenot and Kacey Wernli, founders and executive directors, are proud of their organization and its growth. “We can’t believe 15 years have passed,” they both reflected. “Kinetic Kids started with an idea that all children should have the chance to play sports. We are so proud that our community has not only believed in our dreams, but actively supported our program so that thousands of children with special needs are off the sidelines and on the field! There is no greater joy than watching children with special needs grow up and become confident teenagers and young adults in our community. We are thankful to have had the chance to witness this and we look forward seeing the next generation of Kinetic Kids thrive!” Kinetic Kids began with just one

San Antonio Firefighters Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

Submitted By Kristen Schaffer ne in every eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime, but with an emphasis on early detection, survival rates can be improved. That’s why the San Antonio Professional Firefighters Association’s (SAPFFA) annual breast cancer shirt sale aims to spread awareness about the importance of early detection. The shirt sale, which opened to the public in 2012, has raised more than $50,000 for Susan G. Komen San Antonio. “We’ve had so much support from the San Antonio community,” said Bobby Ford, a firefighter and paramedic, who led the shirt sale for SAPFFA. “It just goes to show you how many people have been impacted by cancer and believe in finding a cure.” Supporting victims of breast cancer is something that San Antonio firefighters take to heart. According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) firefighters are at an increased risk of developing certain types of cancer as a result of occupational exposures. It means San Antonio firefighters are developing cancers at younger ages and sometimes more aggressively. “For the more than 246,000 women who will develop invasive breast cancer this year, we want them to know we are working to help the fight against it,” said Christopher Steele, president of SAPFFA.

Hardy Oak Pumps Up The Tires For Bike Rodeo

Hardy Oak Bike Rodeo winners!

Submitted By Kim Tucker he Hardy Oak Elementary School PTA held their annual Bike Rodeo on Thursday, October 13. The excitement began at 7 a.m. as volunteers and Watch DOGS accepted bicycles from eager students. San Antonio Police Safety Officer Gordon Keogh provided vital bike safety information at a bike safety assembly for students. His presentation helped prepare the students for the event, where they learned how to be alert, obey the rules of the road, and to always wear a helmet. “A helmet should be like a seat belt and used every time a person is on a bike,” said Keogh. Before the event, each student’s bike was checked for safety. Then, PTA volunteers

T

and Watch DOGS cheered the riders along their way. This year, the Bike Rodeo also added a “Hardy Oak Bike Wash” to the festivities. Parents, teachers and students blew bubbles at the Rodeo participants as they completed the course. The annual Hardy Oak PTA Bike Rodeo was a successful event due to the hard work of Officer Keogh, Principal Lola Folkes, the Hardy Oak teachers and staff, parent volunteers and Watch DOGS. Reagan Dancers And Band Unite As “One Love”

Submitted By Valeria Sisson and Cari Goodyear ance joining forces with the marching band is something fairly new in the band world and Reagan High School was the first to try this pairing in 2015. The combination has proven successful because everyone involved respects the importance of each element in the show: 1-Band (Music); 2-Choir (Music); 3-Guard (Visual); 4-Dance (Visual). When all four elements mix together, that’s when the magic happens. “This merging of fortes opens up many possibilities for unique and impressive visual effects,” described Diamond Dancer Co-Colonel Karlie Burrell. The Reagan dancers have added an element of surprise, technique, and size by sheer numbers to the already amazing and strong color guard. “The dancers are able to act as another medium to express the show’s emotion,” explained Silver Star Colonel Katelyn Gutierrez. The most important reason why the dancers elected to collaborate with the band is the opportunity to experience being a part of another outstanding Reagan fine arts program. A different perspective or approach can be hard to grasp when you have never marched in someone else’s shoes. This collaboration allows for the dancers to

D

26

be a part of something new, different and greater than themselves. The experience has also given them a new appreciation for all of the hardworking students in both the band and guard. Everyone involved has a newfound respect for each other’s talent and commitment. Part of what education is all about is learning from experience! As the Dance Director, personally, I wanted to work with and have the dancers work with the amazing team of band directors we have here at Reagan,” added Dance Director Sisson. “They have a lot to offer as educators and I can honestly say that I have learned quite a bit from watching them interact with students, teach and create, day in and day out.” Reagan’s collaborative show, “One Love,” is about finding a common thread among everyone and anyone around you. The line in Human Family by Maya Angelou, “We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike,” embodies its true meaning. This message is articulated through the music, movement and color by every student and director involved with the show. “One Love” and it’s collaborative nature is special because it unifies groups of people that typically operate within their own bubbles through that one common thread of love. “It brings together friends and strangers and it’s amazing to be a small piece in this

Reagan Dancers united with the Reagan Band and Color Guard for a collaborative production of “One Love.”

dynamic artistic production,” added Burrell. “It’s all about community,” echoed Gutierrez. For Reagan students to collaborate together for this long and at this level is a wonderful accomplishment. “I hope everyone that sees the show feels a part of the experience and enjoys it just as much as we do,” concluded Sisson.

Meet Reagan JROTC’s Color Guard Submitted By John Tijerina elcome to part two in this special series of articles explaining the unique purpose and activities of each Reagan JROTC team. Last month’s article highlighted Reagan’s Diamondback Drill Team. This month, Reagan Color Guard is the spotlight. Color Guard is probably the most recognizable team in the Reagan JROTC. If you have ever watched a Reagan football game, attended ceremonies for Veteran’s Day or 9/11, or taken part in the various organization celebrations, business grand openings, and rededications in and around the Stone Oak community then you have probably seen one of the Reagan color guard teams. A color guard team usually consists of two flag bearers (United States and Texas flags) and two guards. While ceremonial in nature, the color guard makes up one fourth of a drill competition’s overall score. Graded in precision marching, movements,

appearance, knowledge, and adherence to strict protocol and regulations, the color guard phase can be as grueling as any other part of a the competition. Reagan JROTC maintains four standard color guard teams: The Rattler Guard Armed Varsity, Venom Guard Armed Junior Varsity, Diamondback Unarmed Varsity, and the Silver Strike Unarmed Junior Varsity teams. However, in preparation for the many ceremonial requests for Veteran’s Day, the JROTC formed four additional teams in order to accommodate the demand. These teams are derived from the four main class periods known as the companies within the Rattler Battalion; Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta. While the color guard’s priority is Reagan Cluster schools on Veteran’s Day, the various color guard teams have been known to support local businesses and organizations such as Independence Hill Assisted Living Community, The Laurels and Haven Assisted Living Community, H-E-B, Education Service Center Region

20, KSAT 12 SA Living, The Waterford Assisted Living Community, and Chase Bank. In all, the color guard teams from Reagan perform close to 40 ceremonies throughout the school year. Most recently, the Diamondback Color Guard posted the

colors for The Puerto Rican Heritage Society (Sociedad Herencia Puertorriqueña) as they celebrated the 15th Festival of Puerto Rico at the San Antonio Shrine Auditorium on October 23. Stay tuned for next month’s article highlighting the Raider Team!

Do You Believe? Write A Letter To Santa And Give Back

Submitted By Caitlyn Lower s the season of giving begins, Macy’s and Make-A-Wish have teamed up for the Ninth Annual Believe campaign, which includes the iconic letter writing program and festivities to spread the spirit of generosity and goodwill. The annual holiday program kicked off on November 10 with a special event in San Antonio at Macy’s La Cantera. Sixteen-year-old former Wish Kid Zachary, who suffers from a brain aneurysm, arrived at Macy’s at La Cantera Mall cheered on by the UTSA Dance Team, student athletes and more! Zachary has collected over 21,000 letters throughout three years of this program, and he has inspired the UTSA Athletic Department to write letters to Santa in support of the holiday celebration.

The Texas State Board of Education has recognized Zach as a “Student Hero” for his efforts in the Believe campaign benefitting Make-A-Wish. His efforts, he hopes, will inspire others to get involved and help make a difference too. From the beginning of November through December 24, “Believers” of all ages can mail a letter to Santa at the big red letterbox at any local Macy’s store or online at macys.com/believe. For every letter received, in store or online, Macy’s will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish, up to $1 million, to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Since 2008, Macy’s Believe campaign has brought together communities across the country, gathering support for the common cause and resulting in nearly $13 million

Panthers Celebrate Ten Years Submitted By Kim Adamski opez Middle School celebrated 10 years of education on October 14 at the school’s annual event, Pantherama. Sponsored by Lopez PTA, Pantherama serves many purposes. The event brings together family and friends to celebrate the wonderful Lopez school community while helping school clubs fundraise for the year. Pantherama came to a close as it does every year with a dance in the cafetorium. Attendance at this year’s special event peaked at over 800, a new record! Lopez PTA would like to thank all the volunteers who donated their time during the festival as well as the local Panther Contributors for their generous donations including Oak Tree Orthodontist, Schatz Orthodontics, Solis and Smith Law Firm, and Church Unlimited. In other Panther news, Red Ribbon Week commenced October 24. To show their dedication to remaining drug free, Panther students wore red. The very creative Panther PALS also demonstrated their leadership

7. Be in contact with the teacher. Try to regularly connect with your child’s teacher. This opens up the doors of communication right away, allowing you the opportunity to find out what is and is not working for your child in the classroom. Knowing what’s working in the classroom will help you create a safe study environment for your child in the home. 8. Encourage your child to get involved.

skills by decorating the school with red ribbons and promoting the many ways to be drug free! On the second day of Red Ribbon Week, students put a “cap on drugs” by wearing hats to school. Lopez PTA encouraged students to post a picture of their cap to the Lopez Facebook page and offered a cool giveaway to one lucky winner. And of course, in the spirit of the theme, the winner’s name was drawn from a hat! The theme for the third day encouraged students to “team up against drugs” with the growing group of Wednesday Walkers by wearing their favorite team jerseys. Eightytwo students were in attendance during the morning walk to show their dedication to leading a drug free, healthy lifestyle. The following day, Lopez’s halls were filled with superheroes dressed for the fight against drugs. And to finish off the week, Lopez students and teachers “chilled out,” wearing their pajamas to school. What a fun way to be drug free! The month of October also marked the

end of the football and volleyball season for the Panthers. All of the Lopez athletes impressed with their phenomenal skills, especially the seventh grade Lady Panther

Encouraging your child to raise their hand and be an active learner in the classroom is a great way for them to retain information more efficiently. They will be looked at in a more positive light by their peers as well as their teachers, and it may be easier for them to recall specific classroom lessons or activities when needed. There are many ways you can promote healthy study habits for your child. These are tips that will benefit them long-term. If

your child is struggling with any specific subject, the earlier you act, the easier it is to get back on track. The staff at College Tutors can recommend strategies for homework help, study skills, essay writing and college test prep. Contact us at 210-202-0303 or email nwsanantonio@collegetutors.com. We will be happy to answer your questions and recommend a personalized approach for your child.

Submitted By Risa Weinberger his November, an area group of teen Girl Scouts (TAGS) collected cleaning supplies to donate to one of San Antonio’s local Ronald McDonald Houses. Ronald McDonald House provides vital resources and compassionate care to children and their families being served by leading hospitals worldwide. Acting as a “home-away-from-home,” Ronald McDonald House provides a place for families to stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost. When the TAGS found out that each family staying at the Ronald McDonald House is responsible for cleaning their

assigned areas in the house, they decided to contribute. Bleach, dish soap, paper towels, floor cleaner, and other essential supplies are always needed by families who are temporarily living at one of the Ronald McDonald Houses. The girls discussed the variety of cleaning supplies that they needed to collect and gathered the supplies for a December delivery. If you are a teen Girl Scout grades 6-12 living in the 78258 and 78260 areas, come join us for some holiday fun.
