Mini Mount Turns Twenty And Looks For A New Home by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

of Laconia, wh ere an even minier version of the Mount Washington sits. It is the original scale model “model” of the Mini Mount which was built by Jack Miller and Ed Aleska of Wolfeboro around 1985 as a warmup in preparing for the building of the actual “Mini Mount” itself. Once they had decided they were up to the task, Miller and Aleska went ahead with their ambitious project; a project

that took over seven years till it was finally completed in 1995 and launched on Lake Winnipesaukee on July 4th of that year and sailed on the big lake for summers until around 2008. Doug Smith bought the Mini Mount from the Mt Washington Cruise Lines, which had been gifted it by Miller and Aleska, after they had for years tried to sell it themselves. See mount on 34

It was originally launched on July 4th, 1995, on Lake Winnipesaukee and often drew more attention than its bigger brother, The MS Mount Washington. But, the M/V Little Mount Washington, otherwise known as “The Mini Mount”, a 1/5th scale of the original, has not been seen gliding across the

waters with its few passengers (and hundreds of Barbie Dolls) for years and many have wondered what has become of the popular scale model of the big ship that was last seen on the lake in 2008. Well, it has been restored and is now looking for a new home. The story of what has ensued over the last seven years starts in the living room of Doug Smith

The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum presents “Pickett’s Charge, Battle of Gettysburg”, Featuring Dave Decker on Wednesday, July 8th at 7pm. Pickett’s Charge was a last-ditch desperate attempt to break the Union’s lines, but it failed, leaving over 10,000 casualties and a demoralized southern army, who would limp away to the south. Although the war would last another two years, this battle was the south’s last hope, making it a turning point in the Civil War. Pickett’s Charge combined desperation and poor judgment with a lack of understanding of battle tactics and new military technology. To understand the Civil War, one must study the Battle of Gettysburg and Pickett’s Charge. This event is free for Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society members, for non members there is a $5 fee. The museum is located on Route 3 in Weirs Beach, next to Funspot. Please RSVP to 366-5950.

“Meredith Chronicles” At Lake Winnipesaukee Museum Lake Winnipesaukee Museum is hosting a presentation, “Meredith Chronicles-a slideshow”, Featuring Dan Heyduk on Saturday, July 11th at 11am. Ancient beginnings only hinted at the great things to come in the story of Meredith. The earliest residents hunted mammoth and caribou and created the first birch-bark canoe to traverse Lake Winnipesaukee and the network of waterways. Centuries later, Meredith’s Dudley Leavitt wrote Leavitt’s Farmers Almanack for more than fifty years. The local woods were the solitary home of Joseph Plumer, who was perhaps New Hampshire’s most financially successful hermit. Motorcycles, cars and horses once raced on the winter ice of Lake Winnipesaukee. Together, these stories weave the distinctive fabric of Meredith history. Dan Heyduk’s town history goes beyond documents and dates, illustrating the unique character of a multifaceted community. Dan will have his recently released book, “Meredith Chronicles-Passing Time on Lake Winnipesaukee” available for sale as well at the presentation. This event is free for Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society members, for non members there is a $5 fee with all proceeds going to benefit the Historical Society’s ongoing renovations. The museum is located on Route 3 in Weirs Beach, next to Funspot. Please RSVP to 366-5950.

To The Editor: Our youth, including Millennials, are disillusioned because they see jobs are not plentiful, and Washington, DC doesn’t function like it should. Polls show they blame the system, not individual politicians, nor branches of Federal Government. Yet this is the problem. Not holding elected officials accountable guarantees 95% get reelected, despite 20% approval ratings for Congress, for example. We have to keep politicians accountable. No one has been fired for the lies and poor care in the Veterans’ Adminstration, for instance. 1 man was retiring in a few months, which is not = fired. The jobs aren’t there because of excessive Federal Regulations. You’d think Washington would reduce regulations to allow businesses to create jobs. That is what President Reagan did in grand fashion. I know, I was there, in my early career, and was able to pay off my college loans. David Martin Dover, NH.

Can You Blame Them? To The Editor: American lies have taught the Iranian government that visible nukes are their only protection against erratic superpowers. Although Mr. Bush’s

Our Story

2003 invasion didn’t make Iraq give up nuclear weapons because we couldn’t find any, early in 2004, Mommar Gadhafi, the tyrant of Libya, gave up his nuclear program under American pressure. He had had a lot more nuclear material than we’d thought - he had 4,000 centrifuges and plans for a bomb that were nearly complete. Mr. Gadhafi was close to having a bomb, but he saw what we’d done to Mr. Hussein. He didn’t want to give up the leverage that nuclear arms would give him, but he folded when we told him we wouldn’t go after him if he stopped playing with nukes. When Mr. Obama took office, Mr. Bush’s “surge had pacified Iraq and neutralized Mr. Gadhafi’s nuclear threat. Mr. Obama could get back to fighting what he called the “important war in Afghanistan. He quickly found that making peace in Afghanistan would be a long, hard slog. Then, as if he hadn’t enough on his plate, Mr. Obama went to war against Libya even though Mr. Gadhafi had decided to play nice. What happened? The French urged the rest of Europe and America to take out Mr. Gadhafi because he’d started killing so many more of his citizens. Mr. Obama “led from behind by supporting European bombing efforts. We also did a lot of the bombing when the Europeans

ran short of ammunition. How Mr. Gadhafi must have wished he’d spit in Mr. Bush’s eye and kept his nukes! The Wall Street Journal reminded us that in February and March of 2011, Hillary “was reportedly a leading advocate within the administration of military intervention against Moammar Gadhafi in spite of our promising to leave him alone if he came clean. Her gung-ho position was the opposite of Secretary Colin Powell’s who warned his boss, “If you break Iraq, you own it. As we should have learned from Iraq, killing the tyrant who kept Libya stable let it fall apart into warring factions, one of which murdered our Ambassador. ISIS has become active there. Mr. Obama and Hillary broke Libya so they own it, but we’ve never heard that pointed out in the mainstream media. By killing Mr. Gadhafi after we’d taken away his nukes and not defending the Ukraine against Russian aggression as we were required to do based on a treaty we signed when we persuaded them to give up their nukes, Mr. Obama demonstrated to all the world that nukes are the only security against lying superpowers. Our actions in Libya and our lack of action in the Ukraine mean that nothing will persuade the Iranians not to build nukes. The Ayatollahs know See mail boat on 42

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

Be Careful How You Read This

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

The new law which takes effect on July 1st has caused a lot of controversy. It is now illegal to use a cell phone, tablet, GPS or any other handheld devices when operating a motor vehicle. I don’t think there are many people who will argue the fact that way too many accidents have been caused by people, especially young adults, who don’t have the common sense to realize that trying to text while attempting to drive is a stupid and dangerous thing. The controversy itself revolves around the extent of the law. Adding in some prohibitions that to some who agree with the law’s intent find really make no sense. You see, as of July 1st, it is now not just illegal to use a handheld device when behind the wheel but it is now illegal to use or even touch said device while you are stopped in your car at a red light, stop sign or in traffic. For example. If you are taking a quick glance through the print issue of this week’s Weirs Times while sitting in your car at a red light waiting for it to change to green, you are acting as a law abiding citizen and following the law. If you are waiting at the same red light, waiting for it to turn green, and looking at this week’s paper online with your

smartphone, you are a scofflaw and will be fined if caught. If you are stuck in a stalled traffic jam and it looks like you might be there for awhile and you decide to unwrap and eat that bacon double cheeseburger, onion rings and chocolate shake meal you were planning on eating at home, you are not doing any harm. If you are stuck in that same stalled traffic jam and it looks like you are going to be there for awhile and you are beginning to get very hungry and you glance to your left to witness someone devouring a bacon double cheeseburger, onion rings and chocolate shake, you might decide to use your smartphone to order take out that you can pick up after you get out of the traffic jam and eat quietly at home. In this case you could be hit with a large fine, you will also be considered a law breaker. Will these kinds of things actually happen? Who knows? But it is the way the law is written. Still, this type of law is not new. It has really always been illegal to be talking and texting on your phone, as well as eating, reading, putting on your makeup and even changing the radio station in your car if it causes you to take your eyes off the road. It’s called the Distracted Driver Law and it has been on the books for years in New Hampshire. Still, some drivers, even those who are convinced that they were given a gift by God of being the best driver in the universe (and all of you know who you are), are driving while eating three course meals, while primping themselves in the rearview mirror, while searching for the latest business news on the radio, while

travelling at 80 miles an hour down the highway, their “Best Driver In The World award swinging from their rearview mirror. With this new law they just might think that what they are doing is fine, as long as they aren’t talking on their cell phone when, in fact, they’ve been breaking the law for years. It’s never going to be easy to stop people who make bad choices from continuing to make them. It’s called Free Will. No matter what the law is, they will continue to make those bad choices and bad things will happen. Then someone will think up a new law that will only make life more restrictive for those who act responsibly while the ones who are the reasons for the new law will disregard it and continue to make those bad choices over and over. That’s just Human Nature. Whether we like it or not, it is now a law. Since we all have to live with it, I really hope that it will help the problem, but I have my doubts. Still, if you are one of the responsible ones sitting in a traffic jam looking at the guy in the car next to you devouring a double cheeseburger, fries and chocolate shake and you refrain from using your phone to place that takeout order, take heart, the diet police should be coming up with some new laws any day now to stop this dangerous behavior. Happy Independence Day!! For information on Brendan’s books and speaking engagements visit BrendanTSmith.com or follow his blog at FoolinNH. com

Holy Hypocrisy And Hot Air Unlike Pope Francis, I believe that airconditioning and the capitalists responsible for the technology are blessings to the by Michelle Malkin world. Syndicated Columnist Perhaps the head of the Catholic Church, who condemned “the increasing use and power of air-conditioning” last week in a market-bashing encyclical, is unaware of the pioneering private company that has donated its time, energy and innovative heating, ventilating and air-conditioning equipment to the Vatican’s most famous edifice for more than a decade. That’s right. While the pontiff sanctimoniously attacks “those who are obsessed with maximizing profits,” Carrier Corporation -- a $13 billion for-profit company with 43,000 employees worldwide (now a unit of U.S.-based United Technologies Corp.) -- ensures that the air in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel stays clean and cool. Last fall, Carrier unveiled a groundbreaking HVAC system for the Vatican to help preserve Michelangelo’s masterpieces against pollution caused by the estimated six million visitors who descend on the Sistine Chapel every year to see its famous frescoes. As the company described it, their new solution “uses two Carrier AquaForce(r) 30XWV water-cooled chillers with Greenspeed(r) intelligence, each with 580 kilowatts of capacity. It leverages specially designed

software and components, as well as patented, energy-saving technologies to maintain optimal climate conditions for the protection of the paintings within the chapel.” State-of-theart intelligent controls “anticipate visitor levels and adjust its performance intuitively.” It also “delivers twice the efficiency and three times the capacity of the former system, which was built and installed by Carrier in the early 1990s.” Here’s the lesson about airconditioning capitalists that Pope Francis fails to appreciate: Carrier’s technological knowhow and breakthroughs didn’t just descend from the clouds. As I recount in my latest book, “Who Built That,” every perfectly chilled home, office, movie theater, mall, factory, hospital, lab and museum owes its existence to the profit-seeking pioneers of manufactured weather: Willis Carrier and Irvine Lyle. These early 20th-century inventive giants brought airconditioning to the market and to the masses. Willis Carrier was the scientist-tinkerpreneur whose prolific stream of experiments and epiphanies, beginning in 1902, fueled historic technological advances in heating, refrigeration and air-conditioning. Irvine Lyle was the mechanical engineerturned-salesman who imagined countless new commercial applications for Carrier’s work -and successfully turned those ideas into a multibillion-dollar business through relentless promotion, pitches, networking, advertising and outreach. The scientists and their core team begged, borrowed and made stock sales to friends and

Welcome to the NH 603 Alliance!

Recently, a group of conservative activists joined together to create an organization—a movement— by Jane Cormier an alliance— of like-minded Hooksett, NH. constitutionalists and conservatives with the goal of impacting who wins the New Hampshire First in the Nation Primary. These activists realized that history will repeat itself—conservatives splitting their votes among 8-10 good conservative candidates enabling the moderate establishment candidate to cruise to victory. They realized that there has to be a way for these like-minded citizens to have access to the candidates and where they stand on important issues and to then come to a consensus to select the candidate who best represents constitutional and conSee malkin on 42 servative principles and is best

able to be competitive against the establishment moderate. The summit on April 19th rolled out the mechanism for coming to consensus on a candidate. THE GOAL The goal of the 603 Alliance is to restore constitutional control at all levels of government and to unite like-minded voters behind the most viable candidate promoting liberty, free enterprise, free markets, and personal responsibility. The ultimate goal of the 603 Alliance is to support candidates who meet the principles of the Alliance. The initial objective for 2015 is to positively influence the New Hampshire First-in-the-Nation Presidential Primary Election on January 9, 2016. Thereafter the focus will be on state and local candidates. THE PRINCIPLES • 603 Alliance believes in the founding principles as expressed

Development Aid Still Critical for Poverty Reduction - International development assistance still remains a vital element in reducing global poverty. by John J. Metzler What’s known Syndicated Columnist as Official Development Assistance (ODA) has now reached record levels of over $135 billion annually and is channeled to a group of 148 countries ranging from the poorest of the poor such as Bangladesh and Haiti to betteroff but needy lands such as Egypt and Kenya. When it comes to development assistance the largest donor countries remain the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Japan. That’s the assessment from the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) the Paris-based agency whose Development Assistance Committee tracks and coordinates aid flows globally. “In the past 15 years, net ODA has been rising steadily and increased by 66 percent since 2000. It has long been a stable source of financing for development,” the OECD states. Aid for poverty reduction projects and technical assistance accounts for the majority, but in recent years humanitarian aid has risen considerably while debt relief grants have fallen. The spike in humanitarian aid reflects the chaotic world situation. Though Official Development Assistance has grown considerably, PARIS

“the growth was unevenly distributed across developing countries.” Aid remains significant for what’s termed as the “fragile” Least Developed Countries but in fact according to reports, “prioritization” is now being focused on “non fragile” but needy countries such as Ghana, Honduras and Belize. The OECD report states that “The United States continued to be the largest donor by volume with net ODA flows amounting to $32.7 billion in 2014.” The numbers reflecting an over 2 percent increase, were focused on humanitarian aid especially to sub-Saharan Africa. European Union (EU) states continued to give the lion’s share of assistance offering $74 billion in aid in 2014. For example, the United Kingdom gave $19.4 billion, Germany $16.2 billion, and France $10.4 billion. Smaller European countries such as Norway offered $5 billion and the Netherlands $5.5 billion. Only two East Asian states belong to the elite Development Assistance Committee; Japan and South Korea. Japan donated $9 billion while South Korea offered $1.8 billion. In addition, Australia sent $4.2 billion in aid, Canada $4.2 billion as well , and New Zealand offered $502 million. According to the OECD, the relative importance of ODA is diminishing. “The growth in foreign direct investment, portfolio investment and other forms of private finance has significantly outpaced ODA growth over the past decade.”

This remains a positive development where market-driven forces of investment can replace government grants and loans to admittedly poor countries. Nonetheless the least developed countries still have not attracted sufficient for-

eign investment to offset the need for aid. And the middle income countries such as Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa still face development challenges despite attracting significant foreign in-

Hillary & History There are no sure things in politics, but Hillary Clinton is the closest thing to a sure thing to become the Democrats’ candidate for president in by Thomas Sowell 2016. Syndicated Columnist This is one of the painful but inescapable signs of our time. There is nothing in her history that would qualify her for the presidency, and much that should disqualify her. What is even more painful is that none of that matters politically. Many people simply want “a woman” to be president, and Hillary is the best-known woman in politics, though by no means the best qualified. What is Hillary’s history? In the most important job she has ever held -- Secretary of State -- American foreign policy has had one setback after another, punctuated by disasters. U.S. intervention in Libya and Egypt, undermining governments that were no threat to American interests, led to Islamic extremists taking over in Egypt and terrorist chaos in Libya, where the American ambassador was killed, along with three other Americans. Fortunately, the Egyptian military has gotten rid of that country’s extremist government that was persecuting Christians, threatening Israel and aligning itself with our enemies. But that was in spite of American foreign policy. In Europe, as in the Middle East, our foreign policy during Hillary Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State was to undermine our friends and cater to our enemies.

The famous “reset” in our foreign policy with Russia began with the Obama administration reneging on a pre-existing American commitment to supply defensive technology to shield Poland and the Czech Republic from missile attacks. This left both countries vulnerable to pressures and threats from Russia -- and left other countries elsewhere wondering how much they could rely on American promises. Even after Russia invaded Ukraine, the Obama administration refused to let the Ukrainians have weapons with which to defend themselves. President Obama, like other presidents, has made his own foreign policy. But Hillary Clinton, like other Secretaries of State, had the option of resigning if she did not agree with it. In reality, she shared the same flawed vision of the world as Obama’s when they were both in the Senate. Both of them opposed the military “surge” in Iraq, under General David Petraeus, that defeated the terrorists there. Even after the surge succeeded, Hillary Clinton was among those who fiercely denied initially that it had succeeded, and sought to discredit General Petraeus, though eventually the evidence of the surge’s success became undeniable, even among those who had opposed it. The truly historic catastrophe of American foreign policy -- not only failing to stop Iran from going nuclear, but making it more difficult for Israel to stop them -- was also something that happened on Hillary Clinton’s watch as Secretary of State. What the administration’s protracted and repeatedly extended negotiations with Iran accomplished was to allow Iran See Sowell on 40

As we approach the 4th of July, it is important to reflect not just on the unique freedoms we enjoy as Americans, but also on the extraordinary sacrifices that have been the price of those freedoms. Just last week, I attended a town hall in Exeter hosted by the Concerned Veterans for America where I was able to discuss issues affecting veterans, members of the military, and their families. I am grateful to all who attended for the questions posed and insights shared. There are around 130,000 veterans that call New Hampshire home, and the evidence of their service is all around us. It can be felt in the freedoms enjoyed across this state and nation, as well as in our household budgets, the businesses that employ our people, and in our daily lives as we buy and sell goods. This is because globalization and technological progress have demolished barriers of travel and trade, and the prosperity of our people now depends on the stability of regions a world away. I have always been inspired by the fact that our military men and women chose their life of service.

They chose to put our safety above their own. They chose a job that requires a tremendous commitment of body, mind and heart. They chose to be ambassadors of America’s values, even in the places where those values are met with violent hatred. I will be a president who fights for their interests the way they have chosen to fight for ours. The president must first ensure our military has the best training and equipment to meet the challenges they face while on active duty, which is why a top priority of mine once in office will be to reverse President Obama’s disastrous cuts to our defense budget. My goal will be to ensure our men and women in uniform are never sent into a fair fight but instead are always equipped with the upper hand. The president has another duty that is just as important, and it relates to many of the concerns I heard in Exeter. When our service members come home, we have a moral obligation to guarantee their needs are met, particularly in regard to their health and well-being. Unfortunately, the Department of Veterans Affairs remains a bureaucratic disaster, suffering from a devastating lack of leadership and oversight. My brother is one of many veterans who have struggled to resolve claims with the VA in a timely manner. Its unresponsiveness is the result of a lack of leadership that starts at the very top with President Obama. Our current leaders fail to realize that the same Department of Veterans Affairs established

in 1930 is not going to work in the 21st century. Instead of doing the work necessary to pass significant reform, they pump more money into the same antiquated system. In the last eight years, Washington has increased the VA budget by $91 billion and grown the staff by 101,000 people, with little to show for it. As president, I will continue working to reform the VA as I have in the Senate. Last year, I introduced – and Congress passed – a bill attempting to increase the liability and accountability of VA administrators. It has not been enough to break the systemic issues in the VA, but I’m just getting started. As president, I will have a far greater ability to enact meaningful changes. I will appoint a new Secretary and charge him or her with leading the Department into a modern era and acting decisively to hold VA bureaucrats responsible should they break faith with our veterans. The measure of true leadership on this issue – and on any issue – is the willingness to make tough decisions and enact bold reforms. As president, I will never forget that duty goes in both directions between the Commander and Chief and the men and women of our armed forces. I thank those of you who met with me in Exeter last week for your thoughts and questions on these issues. I also thank everyone at Concerned Veterans for America for hosting that event and for the important advocacy they do on behalf of our veterans and families.

My friends Sarah and Sharon, the golfing gals, are back and ready to hit the trails this summer. All winter these two snowbirds carried their golf bags and spent time on the dreaded stair-master to be sure to be in good shape for hiking. We decided a good first outing of the season for them would be to finish the Carters. They’ve already been over Carter Dome and the Wildcats. I told them this hike should feel a lot easier. The weather forecast sounded terrific and we were a go. We met in New Hampton at the park’n ride and carpooled. Our friend Stacy came along for the hike too. A couple of years ago she joined us for a cold and rainy loop over the Hancocks. The blue sky had us all excited. I dropped them off, along with my backpack, at Camp Dodge and I drove the car to the Nineteen Mile Brook Trailhead. I jogged about half a mile back up Route 16 and

Kids C.A.R.E. (Compassion for Animals and Respect for the Environment) is a program that encourages young people to take an active part in the stewardship of our environment and be good caretakers of all animals, everywhere. My mom and I volunteer at LLLF rescue almost every day, and I’ve seen and experienced a lot in the past six years. One of the things I love most is that there are so many learning opportunities working with the animals at LLLF. Besides learning how to feed, care for, and clean up after all sorts of animals, I have also learned how to work with the veterinarians when they come to work on site. I help distribute necessary medicines, and I’ve even learned how to help microchip puppies, dogs, and kittens. I love the hands

on working with horses, and by shadowing the UNH Veterinary Technician Program I have learned how to draw blood from, and administer vaccines to, the horses. Coupling this knowledge with other things I’ve learned at the farm, such as care of horses’ teeth and hooves, I’ve developed a well-rounded knowledge of how to care for horses. I have learned many things about horse health over the past six years; for instance that horses can have metabolic issues such as being insulin resistant, just like humans. In addition to working with larger animals at the farm, my family also fosters dogs and puppies that have been rescued; we even fostered a newborn piglet that had been rejected by its mother. I have learned some massage therapy techniques for some of the animals, and recently have been working with a mini goat that cannot stand or walk due to joint problems and poor circulation. New Hampshire is enjoying a booming business: craft brewing of fine beers around the entire state. As mentioned before in this column, NH leads the country in beer sales. That’s quite an accomplishment for a state the size that we are. Also, we can boast that we are one of the fastest growing number-of-breweries in one state as well. For example, NH had 15 requests for brewing licenses in 2014 alone. We have gone from 36 breweries to 42 since this time last year. Each year, we get asked the same questions regarding bats. There are many misconceptions about bats and, although not a bird, this winged creature is associated with many faults not of its own doing. Bats provide humans with many benefits. Bats eat millions of pounds of insects nightly, saving farmers millions of dollars in pesticides and saving the average homeowner a great deal of money in insect repellent and other expensive bug toxins. Because bats mate in the fall but do not become pregnant until spring, scientists have used certain hormones for birth control studies. Doctors have used the advanced sonar system in bats for work with the blind. Vampire bat saliva has been used in many studies to treat heart problems. Microbats that live in the tropics and eat fruit and drink nectar provide the environment with a pollination of key plant species. Without these bats, our tropical rain forests would never regenerate. There are approximately 40 different species of bats in North America. Worldwide, the number of species increases to over 1,000. The greatest variety of bat species can be found in the tropical rain forests. Natural habitat for bats is becoming more and more scarce. A bat house will give a home to bats that would otherwise quickly die if they could not find a suitable home.

Bats eat thousands of insects nightly during the warm seasons. Bats do not compete with birds, either for space or food. Bats and birds come out at different times to forage for food. Birds are out from sunrise to sunset, while bats are out from sunset to sunrise. Also, bats do not eat bird seed. Once a colony of bats has found your bat house, they will use that same house every year. In northern climates where bats hibernate, the bats will leave the bat house during the winter months and return to your bat house in the spring. Unlike bird houses with an entrance hole on the sides, a bat house is built to trap heat with the entrance at the bottom. Place your bat house as high up a tree, pole or

house as possible facing the sun. Bats are attracted to any opening that traps heat, which explains their fondness for a louvered attic window. Enjoy your birds (and bats)! Ask The Builder Don’t Trust Inferior Galvanized Nails To Hold Your Shingles

15 Cross Rd. Hooksett, NH 603-225-GOLF www.newgolfcarsinconcordnh.com

(4653)

SPECIAL PURCHASE

by Tim Carter

Syndicated Columnist

DEAR TIM: I’m getting bids on a new roof and some of the roofers want to use a nail gun to install the shingles. Is this a good idea? I’ve also heard stories about inferior galvanized nails that don’t hold up and start to rust soon after being installed. What type of nails would you use when installing shingles on your home and why? How can you tell the difference between different galvanized nails? --Cheri B., McAlester, Okla.

2011 EZ-GO Electric 48 volts

All the nails have been galvanized. The one being held was electro-plated and it’s rusting after just 12 years. Next to it is a new electroplated nail. The four gray ones are hot-dipped nails, some have a distinctive irregular coating of pure zinc. DEAR CHERI: Roofing The irregular ingots are solid zinc

nail guns are mainstream now and accepted by just about every roofing material manufacturer that I know of. It’s important the guns drive the nails correctly per the written instructions of the shingle manufacturer, so be sure to take the time to read the written installation instructions about this. While you’re checking out the instructions, pay attention to the type of nail the shingle manufacturer recommends so you don’t void the warranty. Realize the fastener is the lifeline of the roofing material. It’s vital the fasteners last longer

than the actual roofing material. If the nails or fasteners rust and fail, the shingles can succumb to gravity and/or be blown away in a moderate breeze. You should be very concerned about using inferior roofing nails. I’m in the process of reroofing my home. It was built just 14 years ago, not by me. It had a heavy-duty architectural shingle on it that was supposed to last 40 years, but it started to fail two years ago. Now that I’m taking off the curled, brittle shingles that are losing granules by the minute, I see the roofer

used cheaper electroplated galvanized nails, many of which are rusting. When it comes to galvanized nails for roofing, the gold standard is hot-dipped galvanized nails. These steel nails are cleaned chemically and then immersed in a vat of molten zinc that sometimes contains some lead. The molten zinc is very hot, usually between 815 F and 850 F. It doesn’t take long for the steel nails to rise up to that temperature. When they do, the steel atoms vibrate rapidly and interlock with See builder on 20

the zinc atoms creating a zinc-steel alloy that resists rust quite well. When the nails come out of the molten zinc, they also have an additional coating of pure zinc on them. Zinc doesn’t rust, and the coating protects the steel from the ravages of water. The best nails get a second dipping in the molten zinc bath.

There are other processes for galvanizing nails, but they simply don’t offer the level of protection that hot dipping does. Hot galvanizing, for example, is a process whereby zinc dust or chips tumble in a hot drum with cold steel nails. This process doesn’t sufficiently heat up the steel to produce a zinc alloy on all the nails. It is, however, cheaper for

nail manufacturers. Another process is to plate nails mechanically with zinc dust. The cold steel nails tumble around with the zinc dust, tiny glass beads and a chemical. The glass beads and the chemical work to apply a thin coating of zinc on the nails. Once again, this process doesn’t create the all-important alloy, and the

zinc coating can be uneven and thin. A third process is electroplating. Here the cold steel nails are immersed in a chemical liquid and electricity is applied to the solution. The result is a very thin coating of zinc on very shiny nails that almost look too good to be true. They don’t have much zinc on them and, as I can attest, they rust in short order when exposed to the elements. Years ago it was impossible to locate hot-dipped galvanized nails that would be compatible with nail guns. Fortunately it’s possible to get them for just about any roofing nailer. Be sure your contract with the roofer specifies hot-dipped galvanized nails, and pay close attention to the minimum length called for by the shingle manufacturer. If you’re applying a thin shingle to a wood surface and no other shingles are present, you might be able to get by with nails that are only 1 1/4 inch long. The shingle warranties are very specific about the nail length, and you want the right nail so they have enough holding power to resist blowing off by strong winds. To tell the difference between nails, you probably need a little bit of experi-

ence. The first thing to look at is the labeling on the boxes or containers the nails come in. The wording must say hot-dipped. If you just see the word galvanized, that’s not enough. Don’t be fooled by the words “hot galvanized either. It’s got to say hot-dipped galvanized. Hot-dipped galvanized nails not used in a nail gun are usually very distinctive. Often they have clumps of zinc on the shaft or the coating of zinc is somewhat uneven on some of the nails. You may even discover small ingots of zinc in the box or nail container. Other methods of galvanizing leave a much smoother appearance on the nail surfaces than hot dipping. I’m using hot-dipped nails because I want no rusting. I want my realistic and gorgeous synthetic slate shingles to stay attached to my roof when a punishing nor’easter pummels my house with gale-force winds. I have a feeling I’ll be out the next day helping to secure my neighbors’ roofs because their roofers chose to use the cheaper nails. Don’t you make that mistake. Need an answer? soaking in the grand vista on the ledges as we neared Middle Carter’s summit. We were thrilled. Last summer we had a long streak of no-viewstoday on the summits we climbed. The Northern Presidentials were especially grand and a few still sported patches of snow

on their flanks. Mount Washington loomed large and I was reminded several times that we were going to be visiting Madison and Adams soon. We made good time to the ridge and it was nice not to be in a hurry. My friends were pleased to back in the See patenaude on 23

mountains and they radiated happiness. We tapped the small summit cairn with our poles and continued down the trail. We crossed a flat area that had a few more bog bridges. Shortly we reached a ledgy outlook. Here we found Mike sitting and eating his lunch. Mike took off again and we decided to have lunch here too. I traded half my peanut butter and honey sandwich with Stacy for

her buffalo beef stick from Warner, NH. I looked at the map and realized this was the last big open view we would enjoy today. Unless we wanted to go to Mount Hight and Carter Dome—that made everyone laugh. Up and over the viewless summit of South Carter we went only taking a moment to tap our hiking poles on the summit cairn just a few yards off the trail. Since it was Wednesday, we met only a handful of

Time for a group photo on South Carter’s viewless summit, Sarah, Stacy, and Sharon and yours truly were happy to be there. Middle Carter, elevation 4,610 feet and South Carter, elevation 4, 430 feet are both on the New Hampshire Four Thousand Footer List.

hikers traveling north. Two men were out backpacking and they told us they had been out hiking for the last ten days. Another was a fast fellow out for a quick run. The Carter Moriah Trail is part of the Appalachian Trail and in another month the north bound AT hikers numbers will begin to show up. From Zeta Pass we headed down the Carter Dome Trail to the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail. This is the first time that Sarah and Sha-

ron had repeated trails in their travels in the mountains. This was the way they had ascended Carter Dome in September. The trail looked much different in early summer. The Nineteen Mile Brook Trail passes by a dam about a mile and quarter from Rte 16. I have passed by here many times and I have never climbed down the bank to stand on it. We climbed down and I was surprised how deep and clear the water was

above the dam. The pool looked totally inviting to jump into if the water wasn’t so dang cold! At the end of the trail the car was waiting right where I left it. We all took off our boots and put on our summer shoes--sandals or Crocs. Ten miles behind us felt good. I look forward to taking the golfing gals out hiking again soon. Have fun.

Summer Fun! The Best Summer Ever Starts Right Here!

Blood, Sweat & Tears In Wolfeboro On Friday, July 10 at 7:30pm the Great Waters Music Festival will kick off its Kingwood Series with Blood Sweat & Tears. “Like a Great Baseball team the members change but the soul lives on, Though many great musicians have passed through BS&T it’s musicianship stands the test of time 2005 found BS&T looking back to founding father Bobby Colomby’s original vision for Blood Sweat & Tears quite simple “Find the greatest musicians and the rest is easy. Since then with Bobby Colomby’s guidance BS&T have re-established themselves as one of the hottest touring acts in the world. Whether playing the Hits that started BS&T’S meteoric rise or complicated Jazz riff’s, audiences world wide show their appreciation with standing ovations nightly. In 2008 The South Korean Government named Blood Sweat & Tears “The Ambasadors of Peace That same year the BS&T horn section recorded with Jeff Lorber on his Grammy nominated CD “He Had A Hat. 2010 saw yet another recording session with Jeff Lorber. A world tour interrupted by an Icelandic Volcano. The band buys a Tour Bus to play smaller and up close venues along with the big concert venues. 2011 BS&T played 3 sold out concerts at the world famous Blue Note Jazz Club in New Your City with the Legendary trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. The current lead singer for the group is Bo Bice, who was the runner up

to Carrie Underwood in 2005 on the hit FOX show American Idol. Their biggest hits include: You’ve Made Me So Very Happy Spinning Wheel And When I Die Hi-De-Ho Lucretia Mac Evil Go Down Gamblin God Bless The Child Sometimes in Winter The performance will be held at the Kingswood Arts

Center in Wolfeboro and is sponsored by Fidelity Investments, Maxfield Real Estate, the Laconia Daily Sun and Steve & Carol Bush of Maxfield Real Estate. The Great Waters Music Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing outstanding musical performances to people living in and visiting the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. “We had seen it sitting outside in Center Harbor for years just falling apart. It looked pathetic, said Tim Lacey, who worked along with Doug in restoring the Mini Mount. “Then one day Doug knocked on my door and said “I bought the Mini Mount.’ What he bought was really a piece of not just local history but something that was a true labor of love not usually seen in projects such as this. Miller and Aleska didn’t just build the Mini Mount based on their own speculation but they had been given the original blueprints to work from and used them in creating what is just about a perfect replica of the big boat taking in every detail they could right down to the horn. “It was unbelievable the effort they put into this, said Lacey. “And they certainly weren’t young men doing this and they worked on it every day for those seven years. The quality of workmanship that went into it is simply amazing. They didn’t spare any expense in building this thing. As described in a Weirs Times article heralding her launch in 1995: “She

A Kohler marine generator producing 7.5 kilowatts of electricity and 28HP diesel engine drives a hydraulic bow thruster. The boat is fifty-feet long and Jack Miller’s boathouse was only forty feet, so they designed it so the bow of the boat could be removed so it would fit. The Mini Mount cruises alongside its big brother, the MS Mount Washington. mount from 35

sold to Mount Washington Cruises. Since it couldn’t be insured for commercial use, they put it up for sale. There were no takers until the fall of 2011 when Doug Smith bought it. “I really didn’t think it would last one more winter outdoors,” said Smith. Smith and Lacey didn’t

really have much of a plan as what to do with the Mini Mount after they purchased it, they just knew they wanted to save it. Setting up shop under a large enclosure on the grounds of Dave’s Motorboat Shoppe in Gilford, they went to work on the restoration. There was a lot of pine

trim and steel fasteners so it had a lot of rust and rot and it was getting close to where it was going to be cut up for salvage,” said Smith. According to their website www.mvminimount. com : “There was clearly work to done, but without a master plan or an instruction manual, the first task was just to take it all in. Wires; switches; gauges; tubes; access panels; and hundreds of Barbie doll “passengers.” (If only they had taken notes.) Slowly but surely, spiderwebs were cleared, rust was chipped away, 3-in-One Oil was applied, and the Mini Mount started to look like herself again.” It was worked on all year long. Tim even worked on it through the winter as Doug was in Florida. “The restoration included replacing a lot of the rotted wood as well as sanding and painting and the mechanicals are in fairly good shape,” said Lacey Still the ultimate goal isn’t to get it back on the water. With the intention merely of saving it the seaworthiness isn’t the biggest issue. In fact, along with the coordination of their friend, Al Dirth, who has been helping to promote the resurrection of the Mini Mount, the have been searching for a new See mount on 37

vestment. Foreign direct investment which fell by over sixteen percent globally in 2014 according to UN reports, still remains vital to most economies. Yet such aid still accounts for over forty percent of development finance to developing economies. Though aid is certainly necessary in many cases, ODA can clearly create a dependency which keeps many countries from reaching their potential. In many ways such a dependence on foreign economic assistance can be compared to training wheels on a child’s bicycle. Though prudent and necessary in the beginning, who would seriously keep the training wheels on the bicycle year after year ? Many countries like South Korea, for example, certainly needed serious American aid in rebuilding in the 1950’s after the war, but then graduated from this dependency and became successful in their own right. Other countries still have that lingering dependence on aid which serves both as a short term blessing but long term bane. John J. neighbors. Carrier even enlisted his dentist for cash to get Carrier Engineering Corporation up and running in 1915. Carrier, Lyle and five founding engineers together pitched in $32,600 in start-up funds. The Carrier capitalists risked it all in defiance of an economic depression and amid the tumult of world war. They couldn’t afford their own factory and scrounged for madeto-order parts wherever they could find them. They dug into their own pockets to cover salary shortfalls. The wealth wasn’t handed to them. Carrier and Lyle, farm boys who both graduated from Cornell, drove their men hard and themselves harder. The Carrier team sold its products to businesses, large and small, that spanned the spectrum of human needs and wants. The pope should know that in addition to sparing countless lives from death by heat wave, Car-

rier designed a special system for Jonas Salk that helped maintain constant temperatures in the vats where Salk’s poliovirus strains grew. The Salk vaccine saved thousands of lives and spearheaded the vaccine revolution. From Hollywood to the pharmaceutical industry to textiles to the retail industry to the military to homeowners, there isn’t a sector of the American economy that Carrier and Lyle didn’t help transform. Their zealous focus on helping businesses provide better products at cheaper costs resulted in the invaluable byproducts of increased health, comfort and happiness. While the pope blames commercial enterprises and the “global market economy for causing “environmental degradation, it is a worldwide commercial enterprise made in America that solved the human-caused degradation of, and environmental damage to, the Vatican’s most prized

art and assets. If the pontiff truly believes “excessive consumption of modern conveniences is causing evil “climate change, will he be shutting down and returning the multimillion-dollar system Carrier generously gifted to the Vatican Museums? If not, I suggest, with all due respect, that Pope Francis do humanity a favor and refrain from blowing any more hot air unless he’s willing to stew in his own. that not even Mr. Obama would have bombed Libya if Mr. Gadhafi had kept his nukes. They’ll promise anything to play for time just as we promised the Ukraine that we’d defend them if they gave up their nukes. Based on our irrational attack on Libya and our breaking our promises to Ukraine, the Iranians know that highly-visible nukes are their only guarantee of relative safety. Can you blame them? We can’t. Our government is not only allowing an aggressively evil regime to acquire nuclear weapons, we also repeatedly showed them that nukes are the only way they can survive. The true blame is entirely ours. With respect to both Libya and the Ukraine, Mr. Obama lied and countless millions will eventually die. the clinic, I continued to learn at the farm, all about his aftercare, cleaning his stall, medicating him, and how to care for his wounds for almost 6 weeks. Following up, I was able to help teach him to carefully lead again without reinjuring himself. This whole experience gave me a lot of confidence and it felt really good to help this young horse through his healing process. My future goals in life are to be a horse handler and trainer, and go to veterinary technician school. My years of hands on volunteering at LLLF have been, and continue to be, a big help for me to reach those goals. I adopted my horse, Knick Knack from LLLF rescue 4 years ago. Owning your own horse is not always easy, and there have been challenges that we have had to work through, but it is all worth it all.
