Freedom Township Historical Society News and Notes The Freedom Township Historical Society had a wonderful turnout on May 9 for our special program on the Beardsley house and dairy farm. Around 40 people came out to hear local historian Scott Lawless give a fascinating program on the Asbury Road farm’s history; his inspiration was a milk bottle he found in Garrettsville when he was a boy. Lawless traced the history of the farm from its establishment in the 1830s to the present with a special focus on Jessie Sykes Beardsley and her second husband, Mandeville Barker, who operated a dairy on the property in the 1920s. Beardsley and Barker also built a large farmhouse on the property designed by famed Chicago architect Robert Seyfarth. We also have a wonderful program on hand for our next meeting at 7 p.m. June 13 atthe Freedom Community Center, 8940 S.R. 700. Jeannette Wilson Marvin-Hall, who is a Freedom High School graduate and longtime alumni member, will give a presentation on the history of Freedom School. Based on the comments on our Facebook page, Freedom Township: Then and Now, many cherish the memories of their days spent at Freedom school. This will be a wonderful opportunity to share memories of school days, chat with former schoolmates and maybe even make new friends. There will also be photographs and yearbooks on hand and light refreshments will be served. Contact FTHS at (330) 527-7669 or at agarrettsun@ yahoo.com
