Portland’s Downtown District Hosts Shop for a Cause Day

PORTLAND Portland’s Downtown District is hosting its annual Shop for a Cause Day on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30. Shop for a Cause Day is a unique way for businesses to give back to the community, while encouraging shoppers to “buy local” this holiday season. This year, participating stores and galleries will donate a portion of their sales from that day to the Milestone Foundation’s HOME Team. The Homeless Outreach and Mobile Engagement Team, or HOME Team is collaboration between the City of Portland, The Milestone Foundation and the Portland Downtown District. The HOME Team offers on-the-spot intervention to help guide homeless individuals (many with mental health and chronic substance abuse issues) to appropriate social service agencies. It also plays a proactive role in engaging with individuals on the streets who may be exhibiting disruptive or unsafe behaviors. Their interventions result in significant

safety for the individual and the Downtown Portland community. “The HOME Team has become such an integral part of the City of Portland and we at Milestone Foundation are pleased to work in partnership with so many other community members. We are honored to be named the recipient of this event, knowing the proceeds support outreach and a stronger community,” said Evelyn Blanchard, Executive Director of Milestone Foundation. “Shop for a Cause Day is a great way to bring the retail community together to raise money for a great cause that directly impacts all of us in downtown Portland,” said Steve Hewins, interim Executive Director of PDD. “Small Business Saturday is a great time to support Portland’s vibrant and unique local businesses.” PDD’s annual Shop for a Cause Day has supported numerous local charities throughout the years, most recently raising 7,000 for Junior Achievement of Maine.
