The company offered $200,000 in the grant pool for anyone in Maine. Hopkins worked closely with Zack Harding, the facilities manager of YMS, to write a proposal for the grant money. “By having a plugging in ceremony, showing a connection to green energy and how we can educate the community, these factors won us the grant,” said Hopkins. The grant amount of $23,000, covered 80 percent of the cost for the solar panels and the last 10 percent was covered by donations and fundraising. Principal David Williams was also an important attribute to gaining the support of the community. “He was welcoming and willing to work with us even though it was his first school year,” said Hopkins. By comparing the MLTI program at YMS to the cost and energy effectiveness of the
solar panels, the school board was happy to help. The panels generate about 13,000 kilowatt/ hours of electricity per year, offsetting energy used by the MLTI program per year. “The solar panels offset 600 laptops, that effectively run 8 hours a day while saving energy,” said Hopkins. Currently, the students can
look at the real time production of the solar panels year-round with a web-based tool capturing the amount of energy the panels are giving off. Students and teachers can also look at the production of electricity around the world and at other schools. The panels are now an energy saver for the school as well as a science lesson for stu-

dents. “They can make a connection with the energy saved in school, around the world and bring it back to their home,” said Hopkins.
