New Heights Teen Program to receive Peace Award
elIOT – The Sarah Farmer Peace Award Committee recently announced the recipient of the 2013 award, New Heights: Adventures for Teens, in honor of the organization’s continuing commitment to offer year-round programs that raise the moral character of local teenagers by helping them develop the competence, resilience, and confi-
dence necessary for a healthy and successful adulthood with a capacity for peacemaking. The Saturday, Aug. 24, program, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kelsey Center at Green Acre Bahá’í School and Conference Center in Eliot will include presentations about Sarah Farmer’s historic peacemaking work, and about the present-day work of New Heights and its programs.
The evening will also feature music by Randy Armstrong, internationally known musician, and by singer-songwriter Leona Hosack, a member of Salt River. This event marks the ninth Sarah Farmer Peace Award, which is presented annually by the Baha’i Community of the Greater Seacoast Region both to honor Sarah Jane Farmer, a
peace heroine born in Dover, N.H., in 1847, and to recognize the current contributions of area individuals and groups taking effective local action to promote peace and understanding. Sarah Farmer founded the Green Acre Conferences in Eliot, where people from diverse backgrounds gathered to learn from each other and where the first peace flag in the world was raised in 1894. The Sarah Farmer Peace Award event is free and open to the public. A facet of the event that continues to evolve is the relationship between the seniors and the participants in the Kittery Recreation Department’s Adolescent Adventure Program. For the 10th consecutive summer, the program’s participants have helped served the meal to the seniors.
