King Jr. (I-Maine) announced recently that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is seeking applicants for its Youth Preparedness Council. The Youth Preparedness Council provides an opportunity for young leaders to serve as a member of a national council, to complete a youth preparedness project of their choosing, to learn about youth disaster preparedness from leadership at FEMA and other national organizations, and to participate in the Youth Preparedness Council Summit where the council meets with emergency management leadership to discuss steps to strengthen the nation’s resiliency against all types of disasters. Participants are expected to represent the youth perspective on emergency preparedness and relay information within their communities. Each council member is expected to develop and complete one preparednessrelated project specific to his/her region and interests. In addition to attending the Summit in the summer of 2013, council members will potentially participate in national, regional, state, tribal and local preparedness meetings and present their work. “We downsized from a raised Ranch for a house all on one floor as stairs were becoming a problem for us. Our new home is easy to heat, less than $1,600 per year on average for heat and hot water. Our taxes are less than $850 per year and for a reasonable monthly fee we have no outside chores to do. Our grass is mowed and trimmed, driveway plowed, walk shoveled, and roof raked when necessary. We have a quiet, friendly, close knit community that looks out for one another. We love our three bedroom, two and a half bath home (downsize?).” ~ Tyler & Jane Spinney
