Helping reduce child malnutrition TERRY CARROLL

The Weekly News

Canadian Foodgrains is changing farming practices to help people around the world who do not have enough to eat. And Knox Presbyterian Church in St. Thomas is one of several area churches involved in this effort. On Sunday June 9, farmer leaders Esther Maona and Malumbo Mithi, with project manager Lizzie Shumba from Malawi, attended Knox to thank the congregation for its support and to outline more about the impact of their donations. Lizzie said that in the Ekwendi Mission Hospital area of Malawi where she works, in about 10 years, “we have reduced child malnutrition rates from 30 per cent to 11 per cent.” The area is prone to periods of drought, and the emphasis in the past decade has

been on working with farmers to switch from a single crop – maize – to a variety of drought-resistant crops: sorghum, millet, sweet potato, cassava and legumes such as peas and beans. Legumes act as a natural fertilizer, increasing nitrogen in the soil. Because of the change in crops, Lizzie and her team have been working with local people to adjust their diet. With five years of CIDA funding, and the support of churches and organizations such as Knox, the next major step is to continue the project to another 70,000 people living adjacent to the Ekwendi Mission Hospital district. Last year, Knox Church members, area farmers and donors sent $16,845 to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank in Winnipeg where it was disbursed to projects around the world. Knox Foodgrains Committee chair Ed Ellis said the church has donated nearly $40,000 to Canadian Foodgrains over the past three years.
