FISHING REPORT

T

he weather is just not playing ball at all for the start of the angling season. Cold one day, freezing the next then warm and back to cold. It’s hard to adjust to that weather pattern, especially when there is not much rain. The fish aren’t playing ball either with reports not too much different to the last report. Anglers are catching fish but they are not setting any records.

Toolondo Reservoir This lake is still fishing fairly well with anglers landing reasonable numbers of trout up to around a kilogram. A few redfin are mixed in among the trout. Best lures seem to be Tassie Devils in a mixed colour range of greens, pinks, yellow winged and spotted doing the best.

Lake Fyans

Having said that, this week a customer had done very well using mudeye for trout and small yabbies for redfin while wading out and braving the cold. But he didn’t do any good on lures. Redfin are few and far between here as well with a few taken on a variety of methods from lures to drifting bait worms and gudgeon slowly around the edges under a float and on the bottom.

Lake Lonsdale Still not much happening out there and with the pipes closed we were hoping things would pick up. But there have only been reports of one or two redfin only coming in with one trout on the weekend. Weed is a problem on parts of the lake, but find a clear spot and give it a go. If nothing else, you might just have a nice day on the water! The Wimmera River, Lake Wartook and Lake Bellfield are only just going with a couple of reports of fish at all locations.

Jeparit seems to be the place to be at the moment with reports of lots of redfin averaging around the 1.0 to 1.25kg mark. Anglers are catching fish on white plastics with coloured tails and the old squidgy hot tails are making headlines again. If you get some white or clear plastics, try colouring their tails with plastics dye or food dye and give it a go the results could surprise you.

Lure of the week Rublex Celta Fishing Lure is one of the best and most popular freshwater lures available on the market.

TEEING OFF: Kings Cars Ararat manager Michael Smith and Chalambar Golf Club manager Tim Coroni are preparing for Sunday’s East Grampians Health Service Charity Golf Day.

It features a Colorado spinner blade designed for flash. The blade is made of top-quality solid brass with coloured print designs that add to the lure’s advantages. An inline blade spinning lure made for catching trout and redfin.

Cars up for grabs

For maximum lure fishing experience, the body and blade of the Rublex Celta Lure are designed to spin to eliminate the instances of line twisting. Having said that, it is recommended to put an inline keel on about 75cm from your lure to stop any twist on your line.

STAWELL Your sports, fishing and marine specialists!

The old faithful silver-green Celta lures are going well, still providing anglers with a good number of fish while spinning.

Golfers are sure to be adjusting the sights on their shortgame irons this Sunday as they walk up to the 18th hole at Ararat’s Chalambar Golf Course. The second as well as the first golfer who can score a holein-one on the 18th during this year’s East Grampians Health Service Charity Golf Day will drive away in new cars. Kings Cars Ararat will give away the new cars valued at more than $50,000 as prizes in the event which will be part of Ararat’s year’s Golden Gateway Festival celebrations. Kings Cars Ararat manager Michael Smith said it was great to be involved in the charity golf day. “We like to support our community whenever we can and this is a great opportunity to support our local Health Service which provides a crucial service to the community,” he said. The charity golf day, featuring a three-day Ambrose competition, also has advertising package from The Weekly Advertiser, 1089 3WM and MIXX FM, three St Kilda Parkview Hotel accommodation prizes and three ‘play and stay’ accommodation packages from Barham Golf Club on offer. The event starts at noon with a shotgun start.

Trout have been very active here but not on a hook. They have been rising everywhere and annoying the hell out of the fisherman by not taking too many lures or baits.

Rapala and Ecogear minnows are the other lures of choice. Some anglers are trolling cowbells with a gudgeon trailer and doing okay as well. We’re not hearing too much about bait other than some are doing okay on worms and yabbies, but not setting the world on fire though.
