Northfest will be on October 18 at the North Foundry Gardens off Palm Avenue between 11.30am and 3.30pm. The event – which is alcoholfree and free of charge – will feature a variety of activities including live music, market stalls, a mobile zoo and a major prize draw. Event spokeswoman Launa Schilling said the event, which had attracted extensive business and community support, was the product of efforts from volunteers who had spent considerable time and effort preparing for the day. “Volunteers are providing the backbone to this event and have been and are critical to its success,” she said. “Northfest has been 12 months in the planning and has more than 15 dedicated representatives on the committee. Community organisations, the council, local police, businesses and community members have been working in partnership to achieve success.” Ms Schilling added that organisers were looking for more volunteers to help the festival run smoothly. “Ever thought about giving back to your community

through volunteering? Northfest is a great way to start,” she said. “We’re looking for more volunteers to help with many tasks throughout the day. There’s everything from setup and manning the gates to steward duties for activities, refreshments and packing up. “With volunteers we can ensure that everything runs smoothly and successfully. We require a pool of about 60 volunteers for an hour or more on the day. “People can call Martin Bride on 5382 9777 to register as a Northfest volunteer. No previous experience is required.” Ms Schilling said John and Sandra Bamkin were prime ex-

amples of volunteers who had helped with Northfest. “They have helped gather prizes for our lucky draw, providing massages on the day and poster drops in the north area,” she said. The Bamkins said: “We are retirement age and don’t see this as a reason to sit at home. It would be crazy to have skills and not use them and we find that people are happy and thankful for the support of volunteers. “For those who might want to volunteer, have a look at what you can do and use your experience to help others in the community. This is where the satisfaction comes from.”
