Demons defeat Hawks in a display of strength, skill BY JONATHAN BOX The 2015 Mininera and District Football League grand final was a great display of strength and skill between the league’s two powerhouses, but the day’s honours and the silverware went to Lismore- Derrinallum. After a long wait, it was LismoreDerrinallum’s first premiership since the club joined the competition. Tatyoon drew first blood with Rich Tucker kicking the first goal in the
game, however this would be the only time Tatyoon would lead for the day. Although the game was a great tussle, every time the Hawks came close, the Demons found an answer. Tatyoon went into the game as hot favourite, however the pressure and desperation that Lismore-Derrinallum showed from the first bounce had the Hawks making uncharacteristic skill and judgement errors. This opened the door for the De-
mons to capitalise. Tatyoon captain Sean McDougall battled gamely for his team and was a strong contributor, along with Samuel Munro, four goals, and Arthur Armstrong, who used his height to dominate the ruck as well as taking good contested marks across half back. The Demons’ Lewis Medal runnerup Michael Lockyer stole the show and made his presence known throughout the day, dominating the game from the
midfield. He also booted four goals to steer his team to victory and was eventually named best on ground, receiving both the AFL Vic Country Medal and the JA Knight Medal. League leading goal-kicker Wayne Loader was kept quiet in front of goals, not kicking any, however his presence across the ground was positive for the Demons. Bradley Lockyer, Michael Fitzgerald, Gary Knights, Bradley Schiltz and Joshua Pearson
were the other better players on the day for Lismore-Derrinallum in front of a massive crowd at Willaura. With the hard work of the season and past years finally paying off, the Demons will strive to continue their success in coming years. In the day’s other games, Tatyoon defeated Hawkesdale-Macarthur in the reserves and Penshurst held off Moyston-Willaura to take victory in the juniors.

Tigers triumph

ea Lake-Nandaly Tigers claimed Mallee Football League’s last-ever senior premiership with a convincing 54-point victory over Ouyen United.
A massive crowd turned out to watch a highly entertaining game, with tough, hard and skilful football features of the grand final. Jordan Doering started the match as he has done all season, with the opening two goals, and the Tigers looked ominous from the get go. Ouyen United found its first major through Henry Armour but the Tigers again found their way to the goals – and when Doering bagged his third, the Tigers enjoyed a four-goal lead late in the first term. Credit to Ouyen United though as it dug in and kicked the last two goals of the term to bring the margin back to 11 points at quarter time. That was all she wrote for the Demons though, as the Tigers kicked five goals to none in the second term to blow the margin out to 41 points at half-time. Scott Weekley was brilliant through the middle of the ground for the Tigers, while
Doering and Ryan caused headaches for the undersized Ouyen United defence. Youngster Aron Morrish tried his heart out for the Demons but the experienced big bodies of the Tigers had the edge around the contest. Two goals apiece in the third term was a good result for Ouyen United as it worked hard to apply pressure all over the ground. Peter Caldow worked tirelessly to finish with two goals while the efforts of young players Kale Barker, Zachary McGlynn and Jacob Grigg gave the Demons’ supporters something to cheer about.
Back-to-back
Early goals in the last term to Ryan and Doering took the margin out to 65 points and as Matthew Elliot and Luke Martin found plenty of the ball through the midfield it seemed as if the Tigers were going to run away with a huge victory. But the Demons gave everything they could and kicked four out of the last five goals to bring the margin back to 54 points at the final siren. Sea Lake-Nandaly Tigers made it back-to-back premierships and they thoroughly deserved it after a fantastic season.
