Rotary art fair returns

H

orsham East Rotary Club’s Wimmera Art Fair will return in April following a three-year absence.

President Penny Flynn said the popular art show went into recess during the redevelopment of Horsham Town Hall. The club will present the show in the refurbished town hall from April 8 to 10. Miss Flynn said the 39th art fair would feature a new concept. “The format will emphasise the artist, as they will have an opportunity to purchase a bay and profile several of their works or just have a couple of entries,” she said.

Winner of the ‘Best Bay in Show’ title will win $1500. Miss Flynn said artists could enter a range of categories. “The catalogue will profile the artists and groups participating rather than just the name of their works,” she said. The club will donate a percentage of the fair’s proceeds to Rachael’s Wish fundraising appeal for a Wimmera Cancer Centre. “The club has a history of providing physical and financial support to Horsham’s major projects that improve the lifestyle of our community, including the

aquatic centre and more recently, the newly refurbished Horsham Town Hall,” Miss Flynn said. “In fact, Horsham East Rotary Club is celebrating 45 years of serving this community. “We hope the Wimmera community will support the art fair in view of the financial support it will be giving to this important community project.” Miss Flynn said people could call Ken Dowsley on 0408 334 910 for more information. Entry forms are available online at www.clubrunner.ca/horshameast.

New drought assistance program Drought-affected residents in Horsham, Yarriambiack, Hindmarsh and Buloke municipalities can now access support from Wimmera Uniting Care via a new drought assistance program.

The program, which has been running in the West Wimmera Shire since November, offers information, support and counselling to people struggling with the effects of drought and associated stressors. Wimmera Uniting Care chief executive Wendy Sturgess said the program would result in additional resources and recruit-

ment to hire workers who will be dedicated to helping people cope with the effects of drought. “We know people are struggling out there,” she said. “This isn’t the first time farmers, business owners and their families have had to cope with a poor harvest, which has a ripple effect across the community. Times are tough – but we’re here to help.” The Department of Social Services funds the program, which aims to build resilience in drought affected areas, provide services to those who would not otherwise access

support and enhance the capacity of existing services and community networks to cope with mental health issues. Ms Sturgess said the program was flexible and could provide home visits, make appointments at office spaces or make contact via phone or the internet. “Taking that first step and asking for help is always the hardest part,” she said.
