immera Mallee Tourism has adopted strategic and marketing plans after months of research.

The organisation hopes to use the documents to consolidate a vision for regional tourism. Wimmera Mallee Tourism is a partnership between Buloke, Hindmarsh, West Wimmera and Yarriambiack shire councils and promoting and supporting regional tourism industries in the region as a united group.

TOURISM PLAN: Buloke Shire Council’s Cr Stuart McLean with Hindmarsh Shire Council community development coordinator Katherine Colbert.

It developed the plans as part of a commitment towards the long-term sustainable management, development and marketing of regional tourism.

Buloke Shire Council’s Cr Stuart McLean said it was crucial to develop a plan and set objectives. “The marketing plan will then complement the strategic plan by highlighting methods to strengthen, improve and grow local tourism throughout the area,” he said. He said Wimmera Mallee Tourism had identified ‘grey nomads’ and families with young children and young adults as target markets. “The development of the Wimmera Mallee Tourism website and Facebook page have been major projects of the Association and they continue as a major focus for the association.” Findings in the strategic plan identify

the need for funding to engage an executive officer to coordinate key activities and deliver programs on behalf of the association. The Marketing plan details marketing strategies for the next three years and combines ideas and objectives to promote the region as a ‘must see’ tourist destination.

Cr McLean: “A whole-of-destination approach and marketing of experiences will be targeted towards natural features, heritage and events. Let’s celebrate what we have right here in our own backyard and encourage others to stay and enjoy it too.” The strategic and marketing plans are online at www.wimmeramalleetourism. com.au.
