Premiers gather after 50 years
O
rganisers of a 1966 Warracknabeal premiership reunion are confident most members of the team which beat Stawell in Horsham that year will attend the event on Saturday.
Max Wright, rising 70 and who played in the centre during the win, said all members of the team were still alive. “It’s 50 years on and while a couple might struggle, considering most are in their 70s and some in their 80s, we are hoping most of them turn up,” he said. “It is probably a record that we still have everyone alive to celebrate the 50 years.” The reunion will be at Warracknabeal Community Centre in Anzac Park, corresponding with a Wimmera league match between Warrack Eagles and Stawell. It will involve a lunch and other activities. Mr Wright, in reflecting on the 1966 season, said Stawell had entered the finals as favourite but Warracknabeal had beaten it comfortably in the second semi-final. “We had been runner-up the year before to Nhill and Russell Crowe, back from Fitzroy for two years, was coaching us. John Kennedy was coaching Stawell and also coached the Wimmera side that year,” he said. “They key to beating Stawell was to stay with them in the first quarter, because they came out very hard and we had to weather that and come home strongly at the finish.” Records show that the then Maroons came from behind to win by 27 points. Media at the time reported the side was ‘fired by the unmatched courage of rover Len Billson’. Mr Wright said 1966 was a part of a vibrant football era when player radius rules applied, teams employed a lot of rough-house tactics and big crowds watched the action every Saturday.

Tatyoon debutant bags seven BY JONATHAN BOX Round seven of Mininera and District Football League saw the debut of Josh Fraser for Tatyoon who he did his part in an 18-point victory over Lismore-Derrinallum by kicking seven goals. The lead changed multiple times throughout the game, however, a Tatyoon five-goal-three to two points final quarter saw it walk away with the win. Mitch Cronin was best along with Adrian Pilgrim and Sean McDougall. This week the Hawks take on Great Western in what should be a much easier game. Great Western is coming off a 180-point loss to Hawkesdale-Macarthur and was unable to score in the second or fourth quarters despite the best efforts of Adam Bullock, Andrew Beckwith and Ben Birch-Burton. Hawkesdale-Macarthur will take its big win into Saturday’s game when it plays Glenthompson-Dunkeld. Patrick Sinnott and Jake Main did the bulk of the goal scoring with 10 and six re-
spectively, while Murray Habel and Lachy Glare provided plenty around the ground. Hawkesdale-Macarthur will not take this week’s game against Glenthompson-Dunkeld lightly because the Rams are also coming off a win, having defeated top-of-the-table Wickliffe-Lake Bolac. They are the only team to do so this season. Wickliffe-Lake Bolac came out strongly and went into quarter time with a four-goal lead before Glenthompson-Dunkeld fought back to bring the deficit to six points. The second half saw Glenthompson-Dunkeld shine and produce a 12.6 display and walk away the winner by almost six goals. Tyson Mills and Chris McLeod booted nine goals between them. In other games, Moyston-Willaura hosts Ararat Eagles, Woorndoo-Mortlake travels to Penshurst to take on the Bombers, Caramut plays Wickliffe-Lake Bolac and Lismore-Derrinallum looks to redeem itself, taking on SMW Rovers.
