AROUND THE GROUNDS Softball: The Penrith City Softball Association (PCSA) is holding a Battery Clinic on Monday, October 14 at the Surveyors Creek Softball Fields which will teach players aged between 10-15 how to catch and pitch. The clinic starts at 6.30pm and is open to all players that are members of PCSA clubs. Don’t forget your mitts, catchers gear and water bottles. Marathon: Congratulations to Weekender reader and local ‘marathon mum’ Shelley Cootes who completed her fi rst marathon late last month. Shelley managed to fi nish the 42.2km Blackmores Sydney Running Festival in 5 hours 39 minutes. “When I fi rst started training for the marathon back in December 2012, I hadn’t run more than 11km and two weeks ago, I ran 42.2km,” she said. “Training was hard, but in the end it was all worth it. I even remember when I couldn’t run the length of my street.”
Tennis: The AO Blitz was in Penrith last Saturday as part of the largest participation drive in Australian tennis history. The AO Blitz is a national competition that allows people who play tennis – and those who have never picked up a racquet – the chance to win major prizes and have an Australian Open 2014 player represent their local town. The AO Blitz set up their portable court in the Mondo area beside the Joan Sutherland Centre. Whilst there hundreds of people of all ages took part in various activities including MLC Tennis Hot Shots, Cardio Tennis and Speed Serve which allows players to fi nally see how fast their serve really is.
