A really ‘roar’ deal

I think that is great news! (Don’t light up here, Western Weekender November 16). I often see parents smoking outside the front gates with a toddler in a stroller, poor kid! Also parents like myself who are chronic asthmatic but non smokers, at least we will be able to breathe a bit easier rather than feel like we are choking on it! pervious PM, and admirer of all things Chinese. It took many years for the European nations to establish what has become known as the European Union. Nations had to give up much of their independence to go into the union, and with their common currency (now in disarray) the Europeans are being dictated to by the Brussels Parliament. It is obvious that Comrade Julia, and the leaders of South East Asia are intent on establishing a similar set-up for our region. Shouldn’t the Australian people be consulted BEFORE Comrade Julia signs away Australian independence to an Asian type EU government? Where is the mandate for our leaders to sell us out? The silence of the LNP on this issue is deafening. Obviously they are giving silent assent to the aspirations of Comrade Julia. Is this one more step to World Government? Selling us out?

Funds please

We donate to the trailer raffle each year and are devastated for Allen and his crew who have been doing this for 30+ years! (Roar deal for Lions, Western Weekender November 16). It’s ridiculous the way they are being treated. I really hope people power can turn this around for them! Amanda Morgan, via Facebook . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Praise for no smoking plan

[Recently] $1 billion was ‘found’ in the State Budget. Please Mr [Stuart] Ayres, tell the parents, students and teachers across the state if this will replace the abhorrent education cuts, or maybe go towards the $3 billion slashed from the public health system? Jo Jacobson, Emu Plains

Comrade Julia is becoming a regular frequent flyer as she jets about the world attending international conferences. She is now off to Cambodia to indulge in gala dinners with South East Asian leaders and to discuss closer ties with the Asian region. The initiative to draw closer to Asia was on the agenda of the

choolies – it’s supposed to be a celebration, a short break marking the end of 13 years of school. But it’s become a drunkfest. A two week free-for-all, full of underage drinkers and teenagers who don’t know when enough is enough. I worked on the Gold Coast for Nine News for many years and have seen fi rst hand just how bad it really is. Night after night, kids – who up until last week were still wearing school uniforms – are planning their days around drinking and partying until dawn. They usually drink in their hotel rooms before going out. And it wasn’t uncommon to see parents dropping their kids off with a couple of cases of beer amongst the luggage. I’m not saying kids shouldn’t celebrate. And I’m not saying that all kids are badly behaved. But you can’t argue with the pictures we see and the stories we read about in the paper every year. Just this week I saw a photo of an 18-year-old male lying on a hotel ledge 11 storeys above the ground. Apparently he was drunk and climbed out the window looking for some fresh air. How stupid can you get! And it seems things get even more out

of control when Aussie schoolies head overseas to celebrate the end of school. Th is week on ‘A Current Affair’ our cameras recorded what happens in Bali and it wasn’t pretty. Teenagers so drunk they can’t talk, groups of boys and girls who have no idea what they’re drinking or eating and illicit drugs for sale in public view. There’s no doubt Bali is a beautiful place to party but it can also be deadly. On average one Australian dies there every nine days. Hundreds more are seriously injured. They’re scary statistics, especially for parents. But if you know the dangers, at least you can talk to your kids before they go and maybe convince them to play it safe. Teenagers should remember schoolies for the great time and great friends – not because they fell asleep in a stairwell or got into a punch up. What do you think?
