T
here’s only weeks before the Rowing World Cup comes to Penrith's Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC) and the fi nal works are still being completed to ensure the facility is in top condition. On June 12, 2012, the State Government promised as part of its annual Budget to fund upgrades to the Regatta Centre, which was constructed for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Initially estimated to be completed by January 2013, most of the extensive upgrades have been completed with the exception of two projects that are expected to be fi nished by the end of February. The scope of upgrades for the Regatta Centre include a complete renovation of the athletes’ changerooms, purchase of an additional pontoon for the warmup lake, construction of a commentary platform at the Eastern Bridge, new portable boast racks, replacement of the regatta’s clocks with new LED displays, trailer parking space and water quality improvement works. There will also be a catering and utility storage building and a shelter behind the Lakeside Restaurant. “The total value of the upgrade package is $749,000,” said venue manager of the Regatta Centre, Kevin Flynn. “All projects have been completed except for the shelter and the storage facility – both of which are situated behind the Pavilion. Both projects will

be completed before the end of February.” When the Rowing World Cup begins on March 18, visitors to the centre are sure to notice the upgrades. “Many of the changes will certainly be noticeable. Visitors and regular users of the venue will also enjoy the benefits of the new facilities,” Mr Flynn said.
“While the works will prepare SIRC to host the Sydney International Rowing Regatta – including the World Rowing Cup – it will also provide a legacy at the SIRC for all events being staged and ensure the venue maintains international standards and allows Sydney to host future international events.”
