DON’T MISS THIS The film everyone is talking about comes to Hoyts Penrith

I

t’s ‘awards season’ over in Hollywood and it’s time for Aussie audiences to catch all the films that the critics love and the big golden statues get awarded to – ‘The Artist’ is one of those films. It’s Hollywood 1927, George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion. For young extra Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), it seems the sky’s the limit – major movie stardom awaits. ‘The Artist’ tells the story of their interlinked destinies. The foreign film stars French actors Jean Dujardin, as silent star George Valentin, and Bérénice Bejo, who plays Peppy Miller, a young actress who’s chasing her big break. Most of ‘The Artist’ is silent, it is purely shown in black-and-white and has been receiving nominations from nearly every international movie awards ceremony across the globe. At the recent Golden Globe Awards, the film was nominated for six statues, the most of any film that year. It took home half, winning ‘Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy’, ‘Best Original Score’ and ‘Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy’.

Probably the coolest thing about this movie is how authentically true it is to the silent movies of early last century. ‘The Artist’ was made in the same screen ratio commonly used in the silent film era. Even though the film is presented in blackand-white, it was actually shot in colour. All the technical aspects including lenses, lighting and camera moves, were calibrated to get the look just right. ‘The Artist’ is a critics’ dream. It’s almost impossible to find a critic out there who doesn’t have something good to say about this film. On review website Rotten Tomatoes, 97 per cent of critics gave the film a positive review based on more than 160 reviews. One critic loved all the emotional levels the film portrays: “A gift that keeps on giving, ‘The Artist’ is a film that demands your attention at every moment. All senses are glued to the screen and director Michel Hazanavicius delivers with drama, laughter, romance and stellar performances from his cast”. Another critic from the UK’s Uncut Magazine commented on the film’s silent aspect: “Initially, the lack of spoken dialogue is discomfiting. Once you’ve adjusted to its storytelling conventions, though, you almost forget that this is a silent film”. So in the words of Molly Meldrum, do yourself a favour this week and head back in time to the golden age of Hollywood cinema and check out the movie that has everyone talking… well? ‘The Artist’ is rated PG and is currently showing at Hoyts Penrith.
