Sad goodbye to long-running business Thank you, Hazelbrook: Popular newsagency closes its doors after more than a decade in operation ERIN MAMO

fter 12 years of trade, Hazelbrook Newsagency sold its final newspaper and Lotto ticket late last month. Owners Suzanne and Shane Morrow made the difficult decision to close down their Rosedale Avenue store 10 days ago, citing various reasons for its closure. While the pair aren’t quite sure what’s around the corner, Ms Morrow is looking forward to a nice long break. “As some of our customers know, I have been unwell recently and get very fatigued and tired,” she told the Record. Ms Morrow is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, an auto immune disease which affects the small joints of the body causing severe pain. “I’ve been working in the shop less and less because of this and my husband, Shane, has had to do a lot more,” Ms Morrow added. The Hazelbrook local said another reason her and her husband decided to shut up shop was because of decreasing sales of magazines, newspapers and other once popular products. “A lot of people these days are committing to subscriptions,” Ms Morrow said.

“We did have a lot of loyal customers but newspapers especially just don’t sell the way they used to.” Ms Morrow said she will really miss some of the people she has gotten to know for more than a decade. “We want to say thank you to the people in the local community for their support and encouragement over the years,” she said. “The people around here are so lovely, on our last day of trading so many of them stuck their heads in to say goodbye. “We really will miss them.” Fellow local Graeme Wheeler said Hazelbrook is a very special and unique community. “The shop owners are friends,” he said. “I will miss our banter over headlines from certain publishers and discussions about chaotic car parks. “The impact of the newsagency closing will be significant because locals will now take their business to Lawson, and I imagine other local businesses will be affected by this.” A sign on the former newsagency building reads “Hazelbrook Newsagency has gone into voluntary administration”, whereby they have appointed an external administrator.
