Fair Time! About the Cover :

(While Mike Arnold is on vacation at his home state fair party - an annual event in Missouri that he hasn’t missed in 10 years) I would like to visit with you a bit. As the county fairs and summer festivals wind down to make way for fall and harvest festivals and activities, many are returning from vacations and weekend getaways to start the back-to-school process. August is the month I take inventory of the wardrobe situation and take advantage of back to school sales. No, I don’t have kids in school anymore, but the grandkids make up for it. We just welcomed our 38th on my birthday. Welcome to our world, Khloe Barnett. She weighed 7 lbs, 3 oz. and was 20” long when born. Proud parents are Michael Jr. and Amanda Barnett. The calendar tells me there are only a couple weeks before school will be in session and the sports activities, fund raisers, and school concerts will also fill the days ahead. I see a lot of tired faces as I watch families stroll by our fair booths at various county fairs. I’m sure this summer’s heat has been hard on many. I encourage everyone to brouse through this last issue before school begins and get one last weekend getaway in before turning in the swimsuits and picnic baskets for schoolbooks or fall home improvement plans. Enjoy “Pink Days” at Kings Island and take a chance at winning a brand new 2012 Honda. See Page 7 for details. Take the whole family to the Miami County Fair for entertainment, Pig Races and lots of food and fun. See pages 9-11. Magic Mountain in Columbus celebrates Family Night on Fridays and unlimited mini golf or laser tag on Saturdays. See pages 14-15. Until next month, featuring Fall Home Improvement...

Great Miami River Days in Hamilton will host drag boat races featuring the biggest and loudest speedboats in the area. See details in article on page 13.

There are several unusual events and attractions taking place at at the Miami County Fair this year. If you've never been to a pig race, you're in for a real treat! Swifty and his friends don't do it for the money, what they really want is that Oreo cookie, waiting on a silver platter at the finish line! They run as fast as their little legs can take 'em, and then it's back to nap time to be ready for the next race! Swifty Swine travels all over the United States, bringing this unique form of family entertainment to their fans. They criss-cross the country in their shiny red trailer equipped with amenities not found in any barnyard. Be sure to get there early to get a good seat! The little piggies spend their youth at the race track, but never fail to bring home the bacon. Their careers last a single season, before they eat themselves out of a job. While some little piggies hang out in a muddy barn yard getting fat for their trip to the stockyards, Swifty Swine Productions, Racing Pigs are busy shaken the bacon around a 150 ft. oval track at some of the nations biggest fairs, festivals, and special events. Audiences will go hog wild as little Swifty (the swimming pig) plunges into the tank in an effort to break the current world record. These little superstars, enjoy such luxuries as air-conditioning, heating and their very own piggy potty. There’s even a color TV and stereo for the little piggies leisure time. They are bathed daily by their handlers, and while in training chow down or should we say pigout on high protein peg pellets, keeping them in tip top condition. If this isn’t enough, they are visited promptly every 30 days by a veterinarian who checks them over from snout to tail and updates their travel documents.Their every need is attended to by their handlers at their side 24 hours a day.
