Happy Father’s Day Don’t really get sappy very often. But I must say I was shakey, emotional, almost ready for tears, when I went to the Rock on the Range concert last month and found myself face to face, nose to nose with my alltime favorite rock singers. Thanks to my media pass, I got some really good photos and hung out for a little while with them after the concert next to their bus. Off stage they were friendly, and just common ordinary folk like you and me. Just shows we all have a place in life and mean something to someone, regardless of how insignificant we may think we are. Which brings me to this month’s calendar listing: Father’s Day. Didn’t always live with my Dad. Sometimes lived with my stepdad. I have even been a stepdad myself. So regardless of who owns the title “Dad” in your family, I feel the following is a very appropriate tribute:

EATON – Preble County Historical Society’s Annual Motorcycle Ride fund raiser offers beautiful scenery, small town hospitality and a rare chance to cross one of the oldest double-barrel covered bridges in America. In its second year, “Bridges, Bikes and Blues” kicks off June 16th designed to take riders on a relaxing, scenic ride of approximately 75 miles, showcasing Preble County's beautiful landscape and an almost unmatched collection of historic covered bridges. Today seven historic covered bridges survive and are preserved, including the Roberts double-barrel covered bridge. It is the oldest covered bridge in the state of Ohio, built in 1829, it’s the second oldest in the US, and one of six remaining double-barreled covered bridges in the US. Typically, this bridge is closed to public traffic but for this event, the bridge will be open, and motorcycles will be permitted to cross. As riders visit each of the bridges, notice that each offers a unique visual appeal, charm, and individual history. Be sure to bring a camera. Riders will have the chance to Page 6
travel over the brand-new Hueston Woods covered bridge that is currently under construction and expected to be open in time for the June 16th ride! Riders are invited to arrive at the Preble County Historical Center for a pancake breakfast. Roll out from the Historical Center is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Last year over 250 riders participated in the event. The cost is $20 per bike/vehicle and includes 8 tickets for raffle prizes and one FREE event t-shirt. Extra t-shirts will be available. The “Bridges, Bikes and Blues” organized ride will end in the afternoon when the riders converge on downtown Eaton. Local vendors, music, food and a beer garden will be waiting. Things to Do: Loving Life Among Fields of Lavender (Martinsville, Ohio) Did you know that lavender is not only a beautiful and aromatic flower, but it is also one of the most widely used versatile herbs known today? Did you know the flowers have long been used to treat digestive problems, insomnia, anxiety, and restlessness? Did you know, until World War I, lavender was used to treat and disinfect wounds or that for centuries English farmers would place lavender flowers in their hats to prevent headache and sunstroke? It's factual that women would place sachets of lavender in their closets and wardrobes for fragrance, in addition to using it in potpourri, and that hospitals used lavender as an antiseptic and disinfectant to sterilize surfaces and equipment. Today, lavender is used in much of the same way, for many of the same reasons. What isn't known by many is how lavender is grown, harvested and the process by which lavender is used in natural products. That's where Mike and Kym Prell, owners of the Peaceful Acres Lavender Farm, come in. Located in the Village of Martinsville at 2391 Martinsville Rd., in southwest Ohio, lavender has become part of the Prells' daily life since they planted their first half acre of lavender in the spring of 2007. Business thrived and they are looking forward to their annual Summer Solstice Lavender Festival which will be held June 16-17 on their farm. Last year's festival brought in people from as far away as Cleveland, and the event is June, 2012
expected to be a success once again this summer. But the world of lavender goes beyond a twoday festival as the Prell's entrepreneurial spirit and their love for the purple flower has expanded to a retail line of certified organic products, including lavender soaps, lotions, lip balms, meditation shoulder wraps, and teas. Peaceful Acres is truly a grass roots business, with Kym Prell harvesting the lavender by hand when it is in bloom. After harvesting and bundling the lavender, it is hung to dry for about a month before it is ready for dry-processing. Some lavender is left as bundles to be sold, but much is rolled by hand, and the lavender buds get sifted into a bucket for loose buds, which are used in products and for culinary specialties. All products are made carefully by hand and sold at farmers' markets every week as well as large events throughout the year. The Prell's lifestyle is unpretentious. Growing up in Cincinnati, they always had dreams of life in the woods and with animals. Living and working on the farm, they live in a solar home powered by natural and recycled materials. Living and working on the farm has its benefits, as each day they are welcomed by the beautiful field of lavender and amazing wildlife. West Chester, OH — USA Triathlon and the Butler County Visitors Bureau (BCVB) are proud to announce that Voice of America Park in West Chester, Ohio, will host the nation’s top upand-coming triathletes at the 2012 USA Triathlon Junior and Youth National Championship on Aug. 11-12, 2012. Athletes ages 7-19 will compete at age-appropriate distances in a number of races over the course of the two-day event. Saturday, Aug. 11 will feature the draft-legal Youth Elite (ages 13-15) and Junior Elite (ages 16-19) National Championships. The Youth National Championships for ages 7-15, as well as the always-exciting draft-legal mixed team relay for ages 13-19, will be held Sunday, Aug. 12. “USA Triathlon is excited to bring the Junior and Youth National Championship to West Chester,” said Jeff Dyrek, USA Triathlon National Events Director. “This event offers a race for athletes ranging from first-time youth triathletes to the nation’s future Olympic hopefuls. We’ve experienced record participation numbers in recent years and hope to achieve the same in Ohio.” “We are thrilled to serve as the host for this National Championship,” says Mark Hecquet, Executive Director of the BCVB. “ With an expected 600 competitors and their families the economic impact will be felt across the county through our hotels, restaurants, attractions, and shopping venues.” West Chester was chosen to host the event following a successful bid by the BCVB. “There were a number of cities across the US vying to host this May, 2012
