Up Close... With The Editor UP CLOSE With the Editor Happy Halloween! The present incarnation of Halloween borrows traditions from four different festivals throughout history. These include the Roman “Feralia” festival, honoring the dead; the Roman “Pomona” festival, honoring the goddess of fruit and trees; the Celtic festival of “Samuin,” which celebrates the end of summer; and the Catholic “Hallowmas” period of All Saints’ Day. The name Halloween comes from the Middle English “All Hallows Eve (evening),” which was shortened to Hallowe’en, and then to Halloween in the 20th century. Many different superstitions abound, some of which are tailor made for Halloween haunting. • If a candle goes out on its own on Halloween, it is thought a ghost has come to call. • A burning candle inside of a Jack-o-lantern on Halloween keeps evil spirits at bay. • You invite bad luck into your home if you allow a fire to burn out on Halloween. • A person born on Halloween can see & talk to spirits. • Seeing a spider on Halloween could be the spirit of a dead loved one who is watching you. • If you hear footsteps behind you on Halloween, don’t look back because it could be the dead following.

• Carry a lump of bread in your pocket when walking in the dark to serve as an offering to ghosts. • Don’t look at your shadow in moonlight on Halloween night. Otherwise, you will die within a short period of time. •When a person lived a good life, flowers will grow on his grave. If he was evil, weeds will grow. • Never slam a door; otherwise, you could hurt a ghost and risk haunting. • Holding your breath while driving by a cemetery keeps evil spirits from entering your body. • If a bat flies around a house three times, it is a death omen. • Ringing a bell on Halloween will scare evil spirts away. • Knock on wood to keep bad luck away. • A bat that enters a home may have been let in by a ghost. But there is nothing superstitious about having fun on the weekend. This issue is full of ways to do just that with offering things to do, places to go and people to see. For instance, take a look at.... well....ALL of the pages this time. Let us know how you like our new look.

ANDUSKY - Not one, not two, not three, not four, but FIVE haunted houses await your visit if you dare at the new Lake Eerie Fearfest. This October, after a $850k expansion, four legendary haunts unite with newly rennovated Ghostly Manor. Awarded “One of America’s Best Haunts”, Lake Eerie Fearfest bands the mysterious legends of Lake Erie together under one roof to create the area’s newest, most unique, most feared haunted destination in all of Ohio. It’s six acres of non-stop haunted action. Darkmare – In the late 1860’s, an oversized merchant ship traveled across Lake Erie, disappearing overnight. Legend has it that an unknown spirit forced the cargo to the bottom of Lake Erie. A container carried bodies of the world’s most feared killers who had been tortured to death. The container was recovered, still intact and chained closed. When the container was opened, those who entered never returned. What is inside the darkness?

Caged - Dr. Syman Starck spent his life searching for what would make him a legend. He built the largest man-made exploration cage and pitched it into the Nasbian Sea, the most bacteria ridden, deadly water in the entire world. The cage is said to be the home of hungry beings who hold a grudge against mankind. Now out for its’ first public display, enter. It’s an outdoor haunted hunt where you are the prey amongst the underworlds’ most feared. Come get CAGED. Quarantine – In the late 1920’s there was an institute that placed thousands of humans in solitary confinement for long periods of time, segregating them from the rest of society. It turned these undeserving humans into brutal, dangerous animals fighting for survival. Discovered on an unmarked island on Lake Erie is the most gruesome of institutes, where the imprisoned bodies leave a deadly odor amongst the surviving villains you cannot escape. Eerie Chateau – Defy fear and enter one of the worlds’ oldest and most terrifying haunted mansions. The dark matter that exists there cannot be ignored. The lake front home

of the late Friedderik Family was known for the uninvited spirits that were drawn into the mansion. Those who have been strong enough to make it out, describe the chateau as “outside the range of normal experience or scientific explanation”. Your life may never be the same after you take a journey through the Chateau. Ghostly Manor - Do not under estimate the terror that awaits you in every room of Ghostly Manor. The haunt has more than doubled in size for this October and has been newly remodeled to compliment the eerie adventure that waits …. that is, Lake Eerie Fearfest. One lucky customer will WIN a 2012 Toyota Corolla from Kasper Toyota-Scion. Just come to Fearfest and register. Discounts may be obtained at area Wendys locations. Lake Eerie Fearfest is located on Rt. 250 in Sandusky. They are open for business every Friday, Saturday and Sunday NIGHT at 7:30 p.m. Don’t miss the #1 rated Haunted House in OHIO. Plan to spend the whole evening. To go through all five, pay only $25. For more information visit www.lakeeeriefearfest.com

Things To Do

S ol v e the Mu r d e r M yst e ry Have you ever Played A Real Life Game Of Clue? Here Is Your Chance It’s October, a time of rustling leaves, cold winds and legends . . . of stories told late at night. The harvest tales of northwest Ohio are a truly frightening crop. They include those of the wandering scarecrow, the leather man, and the Shawnee warrior who wore the dried tongues of his victims around his neck. There’s the Huron legend of Sossibque a lake monster that moved – and killed – with the fog. The stories are chilling enough but when someone uses them as a cover for murder, things can get dangerous in a hurry. ShadowStalkers invites you to share one of its Mysteries on Kelleys Island, beginning with a check-in to Kelleys Island Venture Resort on Friday evening, Oct. 12. Kelleys Island Venture Resort is situated in such a way that every suite provides spectacular views. The suites include ample seating areas for relaxing in every room. Every unit has a full size couch, lounge chairs, activity chairs, extra tray tables, and much more. Flat-screen televisions are in the living and sleeping areas. This two-night weekend called “Deadly Harvest--The Creature Walks Among Us” is a nonstop, wear-out-your-shoes, burn-out-your-brain, adventure. There’s been a murder and there may be more, but the game is played out on a very

large board – ALL of Kelleys Island. At the center of the activities is a diminutive, bookish professor with a peculiar collection of insects and an interest in early Native American strains of corn. Though he didn’t have an enemy in the world, someone went to a lot of trouble to kill him. You just never know about people, do you? Here on Kelleys Island, where you wouldn’t be surprised to see friendly scarecrows in the garden, some folks have erected threatening sentinels laced with thorns, malevolent faces and arms that reach out for you. They are clearly meant to frighten something much more dangerous than crows! “Not to be superstitious, but I’d keep my distance from them,” says Mr. Denham, organizer of the Shadow Stalkers weekend. Guests will team together for the detective work as they visit mystery sites and search every inch of the island in their quest for clues. Guests will have the option of attending in an alter ego. You may choose to arrive as any character or villain from mystery films and fiction. You may also simply be yourself . . . but whatever you do, come prepared! Even if all you can muster is a bouquet of garlic, it may come in handy. Who knows what manner of creature will be abroad, stalking its victims by night?

Designed as a nerve-jangling adventure with no time-outs and no safe places, Deadly Harvest is anything but dinner theater. It’s a hands-on think-on-yourfeet affair that begins the moment guests check into their rooms and continues nonstop until bandages and promotions to the Kelleys Island Detective Agency are awarded on Sunday morning. Detectives will have access to poison, blackmail and bribery in their search for a solution. Everything you do from the moment you arrive may have an effect on how close you get to the solution or whether you survive the night. The emphasis is on fun, guest initiative and imagination. ShadowStalkers invites you to share this cozy little adventure . . . if you dare. You can make reservations with the Kelleys Island Venture Resort by calling 419-746-2900. For more information, visit www.kiventureresort. com and www.shadowstalkers.net. Editor’s Note: Shadow Stalkers shows are built on 20 years of experience exploring the dark corners of our minds. Ciphers, torn maps, poisons and invisible ink are commonplace and guests are encouraged to bring props and false clues of their own.

NEW WASHINGTON - Great daytime fun activities for families and groups of all sizes are found at Iron Spring Farm. Located on St. Rt. 103 a mile east of New Washington and in its 13th year, there is a new corn maze design each year to explore. Take a hayride back to the pumpkin patch and pick your own pumpkins and gourds for spooky jack-o-lanterns or holiday decorations. Also ask about purchasing corn shocks. But that is only part of all your farm adventures. At the barns are unusual animals not normally found on a farm. They have llamas, peacocks, watusi, zebu, wallaby, besides other regular farm animals. The daytime corn maze is a family friendly maze and ready to challenge anyone to the task. “We have taken 10-foot-tall corn and cut out paths to make a real

working maze, just like in a book,” explains owner Tom Shebly. “Think of yourself as the pencil and find your way around our 1 1/2 miles of trails that twist, turn, and dead end you into a whole lot of fun and a few surprises.” A hay ride will take you back and forth to the corn maze and straw maze (for the smaller kids). A building is available for groups to rent for parties, but call early as dates fill fast, said Shebly. Groups can arrange to have campfires, play volleyball, corn hole, gourd shooters and other fun activities. Daytime admission is $7 for adults , $5 for kids ages 6-13 and free for those five and under. To go through the straw maze only, the fee is only $2 for the kids. Original Farm in Rio Grande, O h i o

GALLAPOLIS - Bob Evans’s early television ads invited people to “come on down and visit” at the Rio Grande Farm. He meant it, but before long so many people took him up on his offer that it was hard for Bob and Jewell to accommodate them in their home. Today, the renovated farm and grounds invite you to be a part of the annual celebration of the harvest season during the Bob Evans Farm Festival held October 12 – 14, 2012. This event attracts thousands with its entertainment, traditional art and crafts, farm contests, food, children’s activities and demonstrations. The large brick farmhouse known as the Homestead was home to the Evans family for nearly 20 years. Built in the early 1820’s, the Homestead had served as a stagecoach stop and an inn during its early years and earned a place on the National Register of Historic places. Today, the homestead serves as the Bob Evans museum and historical center. It offers a firsthand look at the heritage of the Bob Evans Farms company, entrepreneur Bob Evans and his family, and the history of the region. Just a short walk from the restaurant and the museum, step back in time by visiting the village of

Adamsville. The Village of Adamsville was first settled along Raccoon Creek in 1800 when Adam Rickabaugh, a Revolutionary War veteran, brought his family from Virginia to the valley that he had seen while in the service. He applied to the federal government for this land with his bounty from the war. The deed was signed by President Thomas Jefferson and Secretary of State James Madison. Adam built a grist mill on the creek and it became the meeting place for the community. Soon, there were two grocery stores, a meat market, two blacksmith shops and a livery in the village. The village was plotted by Adam’s two sons, Adam Jr. and Williams. In 1805, Nehemiah Wood bought the Grist Mill from Rickabaugh and later added a fuelling mill saw mill. Due to flooding, villagers began to move to higher ground when the Rio Grande College was founded in 1876. Beginning in 1971 and continuing over the next fifteen years, the Adamsville Log Cabin Village was recreated in its original location along the Raccoon Creek at the Bob Evans Farm.

CINDY WILLIAMS STARS IN NUNSET BOULEVARD AT THE REN MANSFIELD, OHIO. As part of the Mansfield Motor Group’s 2012-2013 Renaissance Season, The Renaissance Performing Arts Association presents the Broadway tour of Nunset Boulevard starring Cindy Williams on Thursday, October 11 at 7:30pm. The Little Sisters of Hoboken have gone Hollywood in the highly anticipated, latest installment of Dan Goggin’s international smash-hit Nunsense franchise: Nunset Boulevard: The Nunsense Hollywood Bowl Show. The tour will star beloved TV icon Cindy Williams (“Laverne & Shirley”) who previously played Mother Superior in the wildly successful Meadow Brook Theatre presentation of the original Nunsense and was seen on Broadway as Mrs. Tottendale in The Drowsy Chaperone. Tickets are $30, $40 and $42 and may be purchased at the Renaissance Box Office, by calling 419-522-2726 and online all the time at mansfieldtickets. com. The Renaissance Theatre’s $15 ticket offer is available for this event. These seats, located in the back rows of the balcony and limited to 50 seats, must be purchased in person only, beginning two hours prior to the performance at the Renaissance Box Office, cash preferred. Nunset Boulevard is rated PG. For a chance to win two tickets to the show, text NUNS to 75538. Winner will be notified by text at 4pm on October 9th. Nunset Boulevard follows the latest exploits of The Little Sisters of Hoboken, who have been invited to perform at the Hollywood Bowl. They are thrilled at the prospect until they arrive and realize that they are booked into the Hollywood Bowl-A-Rama - a bowling alley with a cabaret lounge - and not the famed “Bowl” they were imagining. Things do not go as planned, as The Sisters must contend with announce-

ments from the bowling alley public address system as well as the activity on the lanes. However, The Sisters catch wind of the fact that the movie producer, James Todd, is across the street auditioning for roles in his new movie musical about the life of Dolores Hart, the famous movie star who became a nun. The Sisters, thinking they are naturals for parts, race off to audition during their show’s intermission. Will Hoboken lose The Sisters to the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown? The cast of “Nunset Boulevard: The Nunsense Hollywood Bowl Show” also features Bambi Jones as “Sr. Mary Hubert,” Christine Mild as “Sr. Robert Anne,” Jeanne Tinker as “Sr. Mary Paul (Amnesia)” and Stephanie Wahl as “Sr. Mary Leo.” Nunsense, the creation of Catholicschool-educated author/composer Dan Goggin, premiered in New York City at the Cherry Lane Theater in 1985, where it won four Outer Critics’ Circle Awards, including “Best Off-Broadway Musical.” It then transferred to the Douglas Fairbanks Theater on 42nd Street, where it ran for over 10 years, and has been presented all over the world in over 8,000 productions (and counting),

grossing more than $500,000,000. During its New York run, Nunsense became the second longest running musical in Off Broadway history, eclipsed only by The Fantasticks. Heavenly Praise for Nunset Boulevard: “Heavenly, Hilarious, Wacky, & Unpredictable!” - ABC Television News “Gleeful, Shameless, & Boisterous!” - St. Paul Pioneer Press “Sensational!” - CBS Radio “Sinfully funny!” - NBC Television News “The best one yet!” - The Catholic Spirit “Delightful, Fresh, & Right on Target!” - Connecticut Post

Leaf Peeping The first week of autumn is ushering in an array of colors as Ohio begins its fall color transformation, according to Casey Burdick, fall color forester for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Take a Weekend to explore, to view, and to photographs the fall foliage in Ohio areas where they are the most beautiful...

Gorge, a 300 foot deep and 1,000 foot wide National Natural Landmark showcases the colors from another perspective. Other great places to enjoy the fall colors in Mohican State Park is Overlook Gorge, the 80foot Fire Tower, the Covered Bridge, Pleasant Hill Lake Dam and Wolf Creek Grist Mill. A driving trip down Wally Road Scenic Byway following the Mohican Scenic River from Loudonville to Greer is great for coloring viewing too.

LOUDONVILLE - There is a snap in the air, leaves present an ever-changing palette of incredible color, apples hang heavy in the orchard, pumpkings and corn mazes abound. That’s autumn and Mohican Country near Loudonville is a favorite to enjoy the change of season. “One of the best places in Ohio for fall foliage is Loudonville,” explained Bob Yun, Mohican-Loudonville Visitors Bureau Executive Director. “The changing season brings with it a display of incredible color at every

turn on our country roads. Acres and acres of forest and woodlots around every corner ablaze with color create a not-to-be-missed experience.” How can your family enjoy autumn in Loudonville? Most Loudonville area cnoe liveries are open daily until the end of October. Trips can be from 45 minutes to three hours, even long. Depending on the weather and river conditions, guests can rent a canoe, kayak, or raft. All liveries are located at or near

campgrounds, so plan to spend the day on the river and the night in a camper, tent, RV, even a cabin. Five other area campgrounds have fee canoe livery shuttles. Don’t miss a leisurely autumn stroll through Mohican State Park & Forest 1,100 wooded acres on 45 miles of scenic hiking trails. The two mile hike on Lyon Falls Trail to Pleasant Hill Lake and Dam is particularly scenic this time of year. A 24 mile mountain bike trail circles the Park’s Clear Fork

Enjoy the foliage from the treetops on the Tree Frog Canopy Tours zip line. Guests spend 2 1/2-3 hours 125 feet off the ground to get a real bird’s eye view of the virgin forests near the Mohican River off Wally Road south of Loudonville. It is Ohio’s fastest, longest, highest canopy tour with over 4,000 feet of thrilling fun? Tree Frog Canopy Tours is open Thursday through Monday, closed Tuesday and Wednesday, through the end of October. Reservations are highly recommended. For more information visit TreeFrogCanopyTours.com or call 740-599-2662.

Things To Do Located on the grounds of Tree Frong is Natural Fit Outdoor Adventures, Loudonville’s newest attraction - recreational tree climbing. Great for all ages, especially if the zip line is not for you or your children. It is open Friday, Saturay and Sunday through Oct. 31. Reservations are recommended. Contact www. NaturalFitOutdoorAdventures.com. To celebrate the season the Loudonville Mohican Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau sponsor an annual Fall Foliage Tour, Oct. 12-14. From shoes and electronics, to hardware and jewelry, customers are treated to small-town service rarely experienced today. Specialty shops feature hand-crafted Amish furniture, Native American art, gifts, clothing, and jewelry, art and craft galleries and antiques, gift shops, florists, year-round Christmas decorations and more. Of course, don’t forget to enjoy a bite to eat at one of our many downtown eateries – from down home to upscale and fast food. And don’t skip on great desserts including fresh based pies, ice cream, malted milk shake, even custard. Not all downtown stores are open Sunday October 16. The Tour continues by following the signs to Mohi-

can State Park with stops in Clear Fork Gorge, Fire Tower, Memorial Shrine, Mohican State Park Lodge, Wolf Creek Grist Mill and more. Free downloads of the Tour booklet are available at DiscoverMohican. com in the October Area Events section and at area merchants during the Tour. For a special treat plan to attend Ceely, an historical drama about the 1896 murders of the Rose family at Malabar Farm State Park. It is performed in the Farm’s barn featuring period music and veteran actors from the area. Audience members are encouraged to come early and explore Malabar Farm by foot. Packages are available that includes the performance, self-guided tour of Louis Bromfield’s 32-room country mansion, “The Big House”, Farm wagon ride, plus a great catered BBQ dinner (or lunch). Most performances were sold out at last year’s play, so advance ticket purchase is recommended. Be advised the show dramatizes actual historical events which took place on the site over a century ago. This includes murders committed by a mentally distributed individual. The performance takes place October 12, 13, 14 and October 19, 20, 21. Tickets are available by calling 419-522-2726. More information is available at www.MansfieldTrilogy.com. Not enough fall fun? It is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sunday through October 28. More info call 419-994-4696 or go online at www.HorseTailRun.com. Need more reasons to visit Loudonville to enjoy the fall foliage? How about country markets brimming with the bounty of summer’s harvest? Orchards full with a wide variety of “pick your own” apples, such as Scenic Ridge Fruit Farm on SR 89 south of US 30. Don’t miss gardens overflowing with flowers, gourds and pumpkins. Fall Ornamentals Farm north of town offers seven varieties of pumpkins and colorful mums. “Autumn is a great time to spend the night in the area too,” Yun emphasized. “Overnight guests can spend their fall foliage getaway camping in their RV, in a cozy cabin, quaint bed and breakfast, hotel, former family homes, a deluxe resort, even a luxury castle. In Loudonville guests can rough it, soak in a whirlpool, enjoy a refreshing massage, take a private carriage ride, relax around a campfire or in front of a fireplace enjoying our spectacular scenery and wildlife.” “Mid-October is usually the best time for peak colors,” he added. “The forecast this year is for a colorful season with some species of tree already turning.” Current leaf conditions and visit info are available on the Visitors Bureau web site, www.
