Festivals and Fairs are everywhere in Ohio!

Wow! We are so blessed! There is literally an event to experience every single day of this month! Many times, there are two or three! As I write this, I’m watching the clock because I have a checklist of three different directions to go before heading to a festival pageant tonight. Our local village of a mere 1850 in population turns into a city of at least 20,000 once a year for the SilverKing Festival and Fireman’s BBQ. As popular as the mud volleyball competition is, Bingo, the carnival and our Heritage Center historical museum are also attended well. As our children are now grown and have families of their own, I haven’t attended a school function lately. It’s been awhile since my house has been filled with the chatter and giggles of teens. So I’m really looking forward to attending the beauty queen pageant as one of my assistant editor’s daughters is competing. I had the opportunity to spend time with her daughters and friends last week during a media trip and I can honestly say they were a delight to be around. More stories and photos will come soon on Facebook, so watch for them. Just not enough room here to share. Am I prejudiced? You decide: (comment on our facebook page...

Things to Do: Prevent heat-related illness MANSFIELD - With heat and humidity on the rise, the Mansfield/Ontario/Richland County Health Department urges residents to use extra care to avoid heat-related illness. People suffer heat-related illnesses such as heat

Page 10

stroke and heat exhaustion when the body’s temperature-control system is overloaded. Sweating is the body’s natural way of cooling itself. In some situations, especially in periods of high humidity, sweating alone will not provide an adequate release of body heat. Conditions that can limit the body’s ability to regulate temperature in hot weather are old age, obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, poor circulation, sunburn and drug and alcohol use. Friends and neighbors are urged to periodically check on the elderly and those with illnesses, as they are among the highest-risk groups for heatrelated problems. Use the following tips to help beat the heat: • Drink cool (not cold fluids • Monitor or limit outdoor activities • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing • Know the signs of heat exhaustion • Know the signs of heat stroke

SANDUSKY - A free country concert is in store for those attending the Erie County Fair this year. Country artist DeWayne Spaw will present his “2012 Outlaws Like Me Tour” featuring his latest CD “Starting Today.” Concerts begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at the grandstand arena, 5 p.m. Friday at the grandstand and 8 p.m. with a street concert. On Saturday, DeWayne will perform at 1 p.m. in the Multipurpose Building. For DeWayne, the songs he records and writes are about real life, things he has experienced and events that have occurred in his life that his audience can relate to. He settles for nothing less than a great song when choosing his material and while he's a songwriter in addition to a singer, he's not against going outside of his own songbook when searching for a great song. "I look for a hit song first; that's my number one priority," he said. Growing up in the rural area of Indiana near Lynnville and Spurgoen, the love of music was instilled at an early age. His mother played piano and sang at church and and his father, a coal miner, would keep the radio tuned to only country stations. However, it was DeWayne's grandfather that put music in DeWayne's heart. "Grandpa was my best buddy and friend," DeWayne says of his grandfather. DeWayne views his grandfather as a bit of a performer in his own right. A lifetime farmer, DeWayne's grandfather was also an accomplished poet and involved in the local community. He was often asked to recite his poetry which he taught to DeWayne. Like all country artists, DeWayne sites a few of country's legends as his musical influences. Merle Page 16

Haggard with his outlaw edge goes down as an influence as does Johnny Cash and Mel Tillis. DeWayne recalls "I Got The Hoss" by Mel Tillis as being one of the first songs he remembers singing. DeWayne's first recording project after making the move from rural Indiana to Nashville, a move DeWayne calls an "adjustment", was a six song EP called Northern Born, Southern Bred. DeWayne says the EP was a stepping-stone and a beginning, giving credit to the great writers he had on the project and the material he was able to obtain. A music video was shot for one of the songs on the album that aired on TNN and CMT. These days, DeWayne performs frequently at fairs, rodeos, and festivals, preferring the family atmosphere to the clubs where many times music is nothing more than background noise. He's opened for Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean and Keith Urban, enjoying being able to interact with the crowd. "I love it so much," he says. When asked about any projects he has in the works, DeWayne says at the moment, he is still promoting his latest CD but come fall, he will begin searching for new material for his next album and will go into the studio early next year to begin recording. DeWayne Spaw uses Facebook to promote his music and advertise his shows and is well aware of the difficulties facing lesser known artists in today's music business. With a rock edge to his music that makes the listener want to get up and dance, DeWayne Spaw is the real deal. Give DeWayne Spaw's music a listen. You'll be glad you did. Toast of Ohio Wine Heritage Festival August 10-11

SANDUSKY - Just like the miles of vineyards in the Lake Erie Shores & Islands region this event, held on Sandusky’s waterfront, is growing! To celebrate the area’s heritage as the largest wine-producing region in the nation prior to Prohibition, the traditionally one-day event is expanding to include a Friday evening event as well as the Saturday wine tasting, gourmet food eating and art show shopping fun! The wine festivities begin Friday evening August 10th with a wine-tasting event held at three separate sites from 6-9 pm. The Merry-Go-Round Museum, The Maritime Museum of Sandusky, and The Sandusky Greenhouse will each host a portion of the evening event and wine tasting. Tickets for all the Friday evening fun are just $15 before August 5th, and $20 at the door. This covers transportation via a shuttle between the different locations, light appetizers, and wine tastes. Patrons who attend Friday night's wine tasting event will gain free admission to Saturday’s festival, by bringing their 2012 wine glass with them. Then Saturday, August 12th at the Sandusky Bay Pavilion (605 East Water Street, Sandusky) the Toast of Ohio Wine Heritage Festival, now in its eighth year, will kick off with twelve Ohio wineries, gourmet food, live musical entertainment and an artist’s showcase. The festival grounds open Saturday from noon – 8 pm. Admission is just $5 per person and includes a souvenir Toast of Ohio wine glass and two compliAugust, 2012

mentary wine tastings. Admission fees benefit the sponsoring museums, the Maritime Museum of Sandusky and Merry-GoRound Museum. Tickets will be available to purchase for exchange of wine tastings and food purchases. Wine tasting tickets are four for $3.00 and glass pours will vary by vendor. Food offerings will range from $1.00 - $5.00. Ticket packages – including a combination of food tickets and wine tickets – also will be available for purchase – ranging from $5.00 to $20.00. The $20.00 package includes admission, glass, ten food tickets and ten wine tastings. Wine related merchandise and souvenirs will be sold separately. A variety of musical entertainment and family fun activities will occur Saturday. The Brad Walk Trio, a local combo, and The Summer of 65, will play during the Toast. The Maritime Museum of Sandusky and the Merry-Go-Round Museum, co-sponsors of the festival, will host tours and activities. The Lake Erie Shores & Islands once featured huge vineyards that spread from east of Sandusky to the western region near the bay because of the lakeshore climate. The Toast of Ohio event was developed to celebrate the area’s winemaking heritage. Today, dozens of wineries still operate in the region. Make a weekend of it with lodging packages available at SHORESandISLANDS.com and tour the area’s wineries. Other event sponsors include Ohio Grape Industries and Lake Erie Shores & Islands-East Welcome Center.

People to See:

M ike e A l b e rt i n “T h e Ull tima a te e Trib b ute e Mike Albert's "Ultimate Tribute" show has become known worldwide for the respectful portrayal of the late Elvis Presley. He will bring his show to the Wyandot County Fair on Sunday, September 16 at 3 p.m. in the arena. Sponsored by the Commercial Savings Bank, this show is free to the public. The show had its beginnings with Mike using sing-along tapes of Elvis' hits. Mike won several major world "Elvis" contests, and demand for his shows resulted in putting together a seven piece Big "E" Band, to emulate the sound Elvis' band had in the Vegas shows and on tour. An appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show and being featured in six music videos on the national show "A Current Affair", with Maury Povich, further exposed audiences to Mike's talent. The actual vocal groups that backed Elvis (the legendary Jordanaires and J.D. Sumner and the Stamps quartet) have toured across the U.S., Europe and as far as Australia and New Zealand with Mike's show at many large conventions and theaters. Mike's style and charisma and his ability August, 2012

to get the audience involved in the show have proved to be quite the crowd pleaser. Fairs, festivals, dinner shows and large car cruises have established a longterm relationship with Mike and his band that draws sold-out crowds year after year. Highlighting Mike's career was an invitation to do the Miss Tennessee beauty pageant, with a full orchestra and choreographed dance routines, and a repeat invitation three years later. Mike's powerful voice lends itself well to every type of Elvis' music - 50's, 60's and 70's rock and roll and love songs, as well as a very successful gospel/Christmas show. Since Elvis had so many hits, Mike makes it a point to keep the show fresh with an ever-changing song line-up! Special requests are often delivered to audiences who are "All Shook Up"! ASHLAND - The Ashland County Fair brings country artist Lee Brice to the grandstand on Tuesday evening, Sept. 18. Known for his hits including “A Woman Like You,” “Love Like Crazy,” and “Hard to Love,” the concert begins at 7 p.m. Track seats and bleachers (reserved seating) tickets are $22. Grandstand (general admission) tickets are $18. Please call 419-281-6831 for ticket reservations. On his stunning sophomore album, Hard 2 Love (Curb Records), the four-time Academy of Country Music nominee demonstrates a new maturity and patience, both in his songwriting and vocals. “I made my first album, Love Like Crazy, over six years,” explains the South Carolina native, lifting his trademark turned-around ball cap and rubbing his forehead. “It didn’t feel like a cohesive record, but more like a lot of different songs. And six years later, I’ve grown as an artist and a writer. “Everything on the new album is very pertinent to who I am right now and where I am in my life. I have some very personal stuff on there, and I had to be really honest with it. Hopefully, folks will see that.” Certainly radio listeners are already aware of “A Woman Like You,” a married couple’s starkly honest meditation on love and devotion. Immediately upon release, the mid-tempo ballad became iTunes’ number five most-purchased song and sold more than 30,000 copies a week. Not bad for a first single off an album. “It’s moving faster than anything I’ve ever had,” Brice says with a smile in his warm, familiar baritone. “It’s just so real.” As “A Woman Like You” suggests, Brice presents himself throughout the album as a man who fully knows who he is and steps up to own it. He co-produced every track, bringing in friends Kyle Jacobs, Jon Stone, Doug Johnson and Matt McClure to share Page 30

production duties on various cuts. “At 32, I’m growing up, and I’ve done a lot more singing, not just in the studio but live. I’ve done about 200 shows a year for the last five years, and I realized that you can move people and peel their faces back without necessarily screaming at them. I’m just learning there is a patience that you gain with experience and I’m trying to dig in. You could be a great singer or performer, but it’s the whole package that makes an artist. It starts with the music that’s out there.” As co-writer of eight of the thirteen tracks on Hard 2 Love, Brice has aimed for strong melodies and smart, emotional storytelling that aims straight for the heart of the human condition: the bluesy sigh of “See About a Girl;” the tailgate reverie of “Parking Lot Party;” the bittersweet tug of love in “Seven Days A Thousand Times;” and the down-onyour-knees gratitude of “One More Day.” Much of Brice’s new self-awareness comes from his engagement to longtime girlfriend Sara Reeveley. While Sara and son Takoda are the inspiration for some of the most memorable songs on the album, Brice’s writing has been lauded in industry circles for some time now. Early credits include “Still” for Tim McGraw, “Not Every Man Lives” for Jason Aldean and “Crazy Days” and “What it Takes” for Adam Gregory. “Crazy Girl,” which Brice co-wrote with Liz Rose, and which was a number one hit for the Eli Young Band, was recently nominated for an ACM award in the prestigious “Song of the Year” category. “Crazy Girl” was Billboard’s number one country song for 2011. So now that it has all come together... big nominations, large tours, first house, a wedding in the wings, and Hard 2 Love, the album on which Lee Brice finally gets to say, “Here’s who I am, in all sides of my personality. I hope you’ll like me.”

People to See: Hunter Hayes NORWALK — Special guest at this year’s Huron County Fair is country artist Hunter Hayes. He will perform in concert at the grandstand Monday, Aug. 13, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for general seating, $16 for box seats, and $20 for track/pit seats. All tickets may be purchased at the fair office or by mail. Call 419-668-0516 for more informaiton. Among the many extraordinary things about Hunter Hayes, the 19-year-old singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist is just getting started. Carrie Underwood is hitting the road on tour this fall, and Hunter Hayes will be the special guest opening act at all of het North American dates! Singing “Jambalaya” with Hank Williams Jr. in front of 200,000 people (11 million YouTube views) at the age of four show his natural abilities. Other credits at a very young age include appearing with Robert Duvall (who gave Hunter his first guitar) in “The Apostle” at age six; playing with Johnny and June Cash, and Charlie Dan-iels at a BBQ; and performing

Page 36

for Presid e n t Clinton. He also wrote his f i r s t song at age six, he recalls. Those experiences show his talent has been there from the beginning as though a gift from God, and one that he’s always conscious to be in service to. Performing has become almost second nature to Hunter who, in his short life, has shared the stage with Hank Williams, Jr, Brad Paisley, Trace Adkins, Leann Rimes, and Lady Antebellum . In 2011, Hunter released his debut album, known for “Storm Warning,” Wanted, & “Love Makes Me.’ “I don’t know if I’m worthy of being considered of ‘carrying the torch,’ but I would love to be told that by somebody someday,” A lot of the decisions I make are from answering the question ‘are we doing it for the right reasons?’
