Things to Do: Learn from visits to the Museums

Museum Mania in St. Joseph Why so many museums and historic sites in St. Joe? Learn the history behind them -8- | www.TheWeekenderMagazine.com l May, 2016

There are many iconic, American stories, but few have attracted world-wide fascination like the Pony Express and the outlaw Jesse James. And while guests come specifically to see the two museums dedicated to those stories, most are surprised by all of the other opportunities here in St. Joseph! St. Joseph is just 35 minutes to the north of Kansas City Airport. A huge fan of history won’t believe all there is to see and do. Up to and during the Civil War, St. Joseph was the second largest city in Mis-

souri and the first railroad to cross the state was between Hannibal and St Joseph. Because the St. Joseph stop was the furthest west in 1859, the Pony Express began its journey here. And by the midlate 1880’s our City had more millionaires per capita than any other city of its size in the United States. Today we have over 2,000 examples of amazing architecture listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s hard to even go a few feet in the City without coming across a historical marker that recounts an extraordinary story. Today, St. Joseph retains those links to the past with 11 unique museums to commemorate the generations of folks who made this area home. The City of St. Joseph was founded in 1843 by Joseph Robidoux. The businessman and fur trader developed a set of row houses to accommodate those who purchased lots from him. He would let families stay rent

free while their houses were being built. The City remained relatively small until the discovery of gold in California in 1848, which greatly altered and accelerated westward migration and this town was the juncture between east and points west. Later, people traveling west often stayed at Robidoux Row while waiting until their wagons could be ferried across the river. Robidoux Row could be thought of as “St. Joseph’s first motel”. This row house is still standing today and is known as the Robidoux Row Museum which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Pony Express National Museum illustrates the need, creation, operation and termination of the Pony Express. ThePatee House Museum was the

Headquarters of the Pony Express’ business office. Today it also recounts its Civil War history and the area’s transportation and communications past. On the grounds of the Patee House, you will also find the home in which Jesse James was shot. While the home has been moved to its cur-

rent location, the Jesse James Home Museum doesn’t just talk about the shooting but rebuts the claim Jesse James wasn’t actually killed in St. Joseph. You will find evidence from the 1995 exhumation of his body, which proved with 99.7% certainty that the person killed in this house was, in fact, James.

Things to Do:

ST JOSEPH - Keeping with the early days of St. Joseph, the St Joseph Museums house 4 separate museums. The St Joseph Museums itself has one of the largest collections of American Indian items in the Midwest. It is also home to the Society of Memories Doll Collection, the St. Joseph Black Archives and manages the Wyeth Tootle Mansion. While these are all great museums, the one in their collection that draws the most attention is the Glore Psychiatric Museum. Nationally recognized as “One of the 50 most unusual Museums in the country”, this museum chronicles the history of “State Lunatic Asylum No. 2”. When visiting, don’t forget to stop in their gift shop -10- | www.TheWeekenderMagazine.com l May, 2016

for some very unique items for that hard to buy (or twisted) person on your list! Along with our history, visitors to our destination can also find a fantastic art museum here in town. The Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art is known for its collection of art from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. To me, the best part of this museum is the ongoing special exhibits they curate. The current exhibit Missouri Fiber Artists is just amazing! They also have some fun monthly activities like “Arts and Carafes” a wine tasting and carafe painting party and their new Saturday children’s activity “Cookie and Crafts”. The Remington Nature Center is located on the banks

of the Missouri River right next to our Riverwalk. Their exhibits also focus on the northwest Missouri region. But the largest draw could be the replica of a woolly mammoth greeting you as you walk in the door. And last but certainly not least is our newest museum, the Walter Cronkite Memorial. The staff at Missouri Western State University has done a great job of developing interactive displays linking Cronkite newscasts with important moments in our history along with a 1960s television studio, giving you a better understanding of what television looked like back then.

Summer Forever Tour with

Special Guest KELSEA BALLERINI

Country singer/songwriter Billy Currington was raised in Rincon, Georgia. Following high school, he made a couple attempts at relocating to Nashville in the hopes of getting a career in music. He found a job at a concrete company, while playing at clubs on the side and working on song demos. When singer Mark Wills put a hold on one of his songs, Currington met and began writing with Wills’ producer, Carson Chamberlain, which eventually led to a recording contract with Mercury Records. His first single, “Walk a Little Straighter,” was released in 2003, and drew heavily on Currington’s experiences with an alcoholic father (the chorus for the song was actually written when Currington was only 12 years old). A debut album, Billy Currington, was released on Mercury Records in 2003. A second album, Doin’ Somethin’ Right, followed in 2005 on Mercury Nashville. Three years later, Currington delivered the eclectic, R&B-inflected Little Bit of

Everything, also on Mercury Nashville. In 2010 Currington returned with his tenth studio effort, Enjoy Yourself, featuring the Troy Jones co-written single “Pretty Good at Drinkin’ Beer.” That song went to number one, as did “Let Me Down Easy.” “Love Done Gone” and “Like My Dog” also reached the country Top 40. Currington returned to action in 2013, releasing the single “Hey Girl” and then delivering the fulllength We Are Tonight. The album debuted at five on the Billboard Country charts, and spawned the number one Country Airplay hits “Hey Girl” and “We Are Tonight.” In 2015, Currington returned with Summer Forever, an album preceded by the single “Don’t It” — a song that reached number four on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart — and supported by “Drinkin’ Town with a Football Problem.” KELSEA BALLERINI - As she launches her debut single on Black River Entertainment, Kelsea is en-

Magic Dragon Car Show LAKE OF THE OZARDS - The Magic Dragon Street Meet Nationals rolls into Central Missouri, May 6-8, celebrating the 28th year of bringing classic cars and fun times to the Historic Bagnell Dam Strip in Lake Ozark. This unique car show, which takes its name from the serpentine shape of the Lake of the Ozarks, is open to a variety of makes and models and brings in over 10,000 spectators from across the Midwest to check out all the cool cars, trucks and motorcycles on display along “the Strip” throughout the weekend. For both safety and convenience, the Bagnell Dam Strip will be closed off to motor traffic during show hours on Saturday so that the 1,000 registered vehicles can be easily accessed and viewed by attendees and fellow show car owners. “The Strip is a fantastic location for this event,” says Tim Jacobsen, director of the Lake of the Ozarks Convention and Visitor Bureau. “It allows everyone to be able to walk around and check out all the awesome cars and visit with the owners, who are all really proud of their cars and love to talk about them. So, it adds a

level of intimacy and interaction between the attendees and participants. And, there are great restaurants and shops all right there, so it makes it really convenient and just adds to the overall feel of the event.” Magic Dragon has continued to grow in size and popularity since the inaugural “street meet” in 1989. All of the cars on display are the major draw for visitors, but there’s plenty going on throughout the weekend to keep attendees entertained. K.C. Cloke, executive director of the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, says that there have been several additions to this year’s Street Meet program. “Attendees will find a couple new highlights over the weekend, including a Corvette Corral, where

different variations of Corvettes will be stationed. There will be an off-road zone where all of the big trucks will be on display and mounted on rocks and logs, and there will even be a vehicle-focused swap meet. It’s going to be very exciting. And, we also have a record-breaking number of vendors for this year’s event, so there will plenty of things to see and do.” The official show hours for the Magic Dragon Street Meet are noon until 5 p.m. on Friday, 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Sunday. Although the show doesn’t officially kick off until Friday, many of the show cars begin to arrive on Thursday and there will also be an “Aces High” poker run that day.

On both Friday and Saturday, Iguana Boat Sales hosts the first annual “Car Swap Meet,” where visitors can buy all makes and models of cars and trucks, parts, accessories and more. The Swap Meet takes place at Lake Ozark RV Park & Campground, just off of the Bagnell Dam Strip at 70 Legion Road, and a free shuttle service will be provided to and from the Swap Meet to the Street Meet both days. On Saturday, there’s a kids “fun zone” sponsored by Home Depot, where the younger attendees can participate in a “make-n-take” activity and take home a handbuilt helicopter. There will also be a 50/50 raffle that evening. One of the highlights of the event happens at 5 p.m. that day when one lucky winner will be handed the keys to a brand new 2016 Chev-

rolet Camaro RS, compliments of the Lake Ozark Daybreak Rotary Club. Judging of the registered vehicles will take place Sunday morning from 9-11 a.m. Winners in 27 different competitive classes and the overall grand champion will be announced at 1 p.m. at the main stage located at Lake Ozark Live, 1508 Bagnell Dam Boulevard. DJs from Cool 102.7 FM will be broadcasting live on location and blasting classic hits throughout the weekend adding to the authentic “street meet” vibe, which past attendees have likened to walking onto the set of the film American Graffiti. For more information on the Magic Dragon Street Meet, including a full schedule of events and judging categories, visit www.

People to See:

Sarah Morgan

6 p.m. Thurs., May 7th

Dinner Concert Auction Sara Morgan is a performing singer/songwriter quickly making her name known throughout the Midwest and beyond. A true storyteller, Sara often brings her lyrics and music to the stage in songs she refers to as hybrid country; thought-provoking lyrics rich in substance, accompanied by music that blends a modern, contemporary country sound with echoes of the traditional, classic country she loves. Although her live performances contain a definite country flair, her songwriting catalog reaches across multiple genres. Sara writes and composes an eclectic mix of songs ranging from folk, Americana, bluegrass, and country, to rock, pop, and contemporary Christian. Her versatility as a singer/songwriter is as undeniable as

her unique vocal sound. Sara sells out listening rooms, is a crowd favorite at song swaps and songwriter showcases, and is often asked to assist other songwriters with their work. She has opened for multi-Grammy and Dove award winner BJ Thomas, country superstar John Michael Montgomery, Sex and the City heart throb John Corbett, Ben Taylor, Sean Rowe, and singer/songwriter Ben Taylor. She was also the preshow act at the Industry Bar inside the Uptown Theater in Kansas City before her idol, Loretta Lynn, took the main stage. Sara has appeared on WDAF Fox TV, KCTV 5, and she has performed the National Anthem for the Missouri Mavericks hockey team; her songs get regular radio play on community radio station

KKFI 90.1 FM in Kansas City and KMXN 92.9 “The Bull” in Lawrence, KS; she has been featured in the Kansas City Star and The Pitch news publications, and she records at Chapman Studios in Lenexa, Kansas. Sara resides in the Kansas City metropolitan area. It was a little over a year ago when Sarah debuted her song “One Night at the Opry” on The Tasty Brew Music Radio Show to help raise funds for KKFI’s Winter Pledge Drive. Her most recent song, “Drive a Tractor” is now helping in a new campaign to raise awareness and designate a portion of the proceeds to scholarships for future farmers.
