Up Close: From the Editor

School is out most places and the summer months are finally here! Time for an extended weekend getaway. I have the priveledge of spending it with my 92- year - old father in my Missouri where the Scott Joplin Festival is currently taking places. Scott Joplin wrotte the ragtime songs featured in the movie, “The Sting.” So with Father’s Day this month, the beginning of hundreds of festivals across the U.S., the summer sport of “ball” in full swing, and vacation schedules verified, there were just too many important topics to cover to weed this month’s theme down to one. Which is why I’m thrilled to be in the middle of it all right here in Missouri. (My dad even lives right across the street from the baseball diamond it the park.) As for unusual accomodations to choose from (see page 8) I’m trying to get used to climbing up the bedpost to sleep in my sisters “very high” antique bed, complete with feather pillows. We’re headed to Silver Dollar City tomorrow. More coverage on that next month... But it reminds me of the first time I ever visited there. When it first opened, Branson did not have enough hotels to accomodate visitors. We wound up sleeping in the car in a parking lot with the rest of several other families in vehicles. Not something I’d want to repeat today. So happy travels everyone. I want to hear about your adventures! Meanwhile, I’m putting the house and office cleaning to rest for a bit. There is always next winter to comlete that. Below is the result of a newly designed collage of my mother’s paintings on freshly painted living room. More later...

Things To Do

S t ay O ver n igh t Earthships

TRES PIEDRAS, NEW MEXICO These aggressively sustainable art homes look like something out of 1970’s science fiction. On a sprawling mesa just northwest of Taos, New Mexico, architect Michael Reynolds has spurred the development of a series of off-the-grid homes, nicknamed “Earthships.” These homes use passive solar technology, wind power, recycled water, old tires, car batteries, glass bottles and pretty much every off-the-grid technology there is except the kitchen sink. Most of the earthships are low-rise, single-story structures that are long and narrow, with one side generally built into a hill and its opposing side being two walls of glass, with plants usually occupying the space between the two walls. Many have some fanciful turrets or towers attached at some point, but plenty are very simple. Yet despite the variation, the common factor among them is that they were constructed by the homeowners themselves, reflecting their personal style.

Dog Bark Park Inn

Cottonwood, Oregon - Sleep in the inn shaped like a giant dog. It offers a dog theme throughout including 26 carved dogs. Bring your dog as they are also allowed. Many people have been in the doghouse, but few can say that they’ve actually slept in one.

In A Lighthouse

NEW DUNGENEWSS, Washington - Located at the tip of the five-mile long Dungeness spit in Sequim, maximum capacity is seven. The Keeper Program helps to preserve the Light Station by offering individuals, families and groups an opportunity to spend a week as Keepers while performing light maintenance duties and providing tours. Wigwam Village,

Holbrook, Arizona - Dating to 1950 and located off Historic Route 66, this particular motel is authentic mid-century Americana. Classic cars adorn the parking lot and neon signs in retro fonts greet nostalgic road trippers, while the 15 “wigwams” (technically more like teepees) feature typical motel comforts including hot showers and cable TV.

In A Cave

PARTHENON, AR - Beckham Creek Cave Lodge in the Arkansas Ozarks welcomes visitors to its renovated cave bedrooms. The cavernous ceilings, walls of rock and a natural waterfall in the center of the main room let you feel close to nature without being uncomfortable, while guaranteeing stunning acoustics for movies on TV. The hotel is structured more like a house -- hence “lodge” -- with a kitchen, main room, five full bedrooms (with their own baths) and a recreation room.

In School

PORTLAND, OR - A pub and a former elementary school. It’s an unlikely relationship, but at the McMenamins Kennedy School in Portland, Oregon, it works fabulously as a hotel. At the Kennedy School, sleeping in class is encouraged -- the 35 guestrooms are former classrooms, retaining props like desks and chalkboards. The school auditorium is now a movie theater and the school cafeteria (now a restaurant) actually serves

Stay Over

KEY LARGO, Florida Keys — Jules’ Undersea Lodge, the United States’ only submerged recreational hotel, has reopened to overnight divers. The famed lodge, located at Key Largo Undersea Park, sustained no damage when Hurricane Irma struck the Florida Keys last fall. At the park, however, the Category 4 storm damaged a property generator, gift shop, office and above-ground rooms, temporarily discolored its Emerald Lagoon and scattered debris from downed tree limbs and foliage. The lagoon reopened to divers and snorkelers in early November after an extensive cleanup. “The excitement of having our first guests back after Irma is that we can again offer the public the technology of undersea living and what is required to sustain it,” said Teresa McKinna, vice president and chief financial officer. “People are interested in the science of it all.” The lodge, whose entrance is 21 feet beneath the surface, has two bedrooms, a shower and head, and can -10- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2018

comfortably host a maximum of six scuba-certified guests. Divers deliver supplies such as linens through an underwater opening called a moon pool. A dockside compressor pushes scrubbed and filtered air into the lodge. Land-based dive operators closely monitor the air and safety of underwater guests during activities such as venturing out for a dive. Guests can order fresh local pizza in an original box or choose gourmet meal options of filet and Florida lobster, baked potato, roll and homemade Key lime pie. Food is delivered in a weighted waterproof case. The facility has hosted more than 10,000 overnight guests including Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, actor Tim Allen and two rock stars: Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and Phish drummer Jon Fishman. A Tennessee college professor and instructor stayed in the lodge for a record-breaking 73 days in 2014 during a “Classroom Under the Sea” underwater living mission.

night Under Water

The stay is cited in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “longest time spent living in an underwater fixed habitat.” Jules’ overnight experience also offers what the lodge bills as the world’s only Recreational Aquanaut specialty scuba diving recognition. Its MarineLab educational programs teach about 5,000 students each year. The lodge initially was the bright orange La Chalupa research laboratory, one of the most technologi-

cally advanced habitats of its kind. It conducted sea floor studies and saturation dive currents. First based in Vieques, Puerto Rico, La Chalupa was immersed in 100 feet of water, then moved to Miami and later to Key Largo to the park’s lagoon. The lodge’s current name was inspired by novelist Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” For more information, visit www. jul.com or call 800-822-1088.

et’s “Go the distance” and visit a family century farm with a baseball diamond carved right into the heart of it all. It is the original site of the filming of the 1989 movie, “Field of Dreams,” starring Kevin Costner. Located in Dubuque County close to Dyersville, the former Lansing farm is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with tours of the home available between 10-4. This 30-minute, live guided tour will take visitors through the first floor of the home, which has been restored to look just like it did in the movie and features movie artifacts. However visiters must call 24 hours in advance to set up their tour. Tours are $20 for adults and $12 for children 3-17. The award-winning sports movie was adapted to the story of “Shoeless Joe.” The character Ray Kinsella is a novice Iowa farmer who hears voices in the cornfield and sees a vision of a baseball diamond. “If you build it, he will come,” he keeps hearing. So he does. After several months, the family faces financial hardship until one day, baseball star ghosts begin to appear and the -12- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2018

Field of game is played. Now when you come to the field, you can play ball and learn about the Shoeless Joe, the first ghost to appear on the field in the movie. Learn about the making of the film and backgrounds of the stars who helped make it famous. Read about the book that inspired the movie script and the true story behind Doc Graham, one of the movie’s characters. Visit on Ghost Sunday when the game offers free admission. . Ghost Sunday is an event where the players (many are former cast members of the original film) emerge and are introduced with detail to the audience. Their performance and interaction with the children is truly priceless! This venue may also be rented for corporate and private events, like weddings and evening ball games. When it was first built for the movie, the look of the new ball field itself didn’t inspire much confidence due to a drought. The landscape was brown and fallow. To make the farmland presentable, the crew was forced to irrigate, but even that didn’t fix the problem fully. Right before filming began, the director decided, in des-

peration, to paint the cornstalks and portions of the grass green. Filming ended in early August. Field of Dreams opened in only 22 theaters nationwide. The “love letter to Iowa,” as locals describe it, quickly reached the box-office top 10 and stayed there almost until the Fourth of July, ultimately earning more than $64 million domestically. To the shock of locals, it was a runaway hit.

Food Fun Let’s Play Trivia

Ready? Question One: What is Pickle Ball? I know. Right? Just the name alone conjures up mental images of summer picnics with hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad . . . and pickles! Similarly, Pickle Ball brings to mind a group of children playing outdoors with whatever object is handy. Yes, even if it is a pickle. Can’t you just picture them in a circle, kicking or tossing it back and forth to each other? And if the game gets boring or they get hungry, they can take a bite. Well, maybe not in reality, but it sounds like good material for a cartoon segment of some sort. So, “What is Pickle Ball?” you may ask. I don’t have a clue. But there really is such a thing and very soon we are going to find out how it works. Since my husband has entered a tournament, he figured he should probably find out how the game is played, what the rules are and what equipment is needed. What it is? Check. What the rules are? Check. What equipment needed? Check. How is it played? We’ll see. All of the above was written several days ago and now, after a full week of research, I can honestly say I think Pickle Ball sounds intriguing, to say the least. Confusing also comes to mind along with potentially fun. At my age, a fast moving tennis ball just isn’t something with which I wish to do battle. But I have always liked badminton. However, finding someone else who also likes that game is the problem. Enter Pickle Ball to the rescue. It is played with a paddle and a whiffle ball so it doesn’t go zipping past my head at ridiculous speeds requiring quick reflexes I no longer have. Now, who can I find to join me ? Good news! A small group of local residents gather in the park very near our house twice a week to play pickle ball and they are willing to teach us how to play. So far, the rules sound like a mix of tennis, badminton, ping pong and racquet ball all rolled into one big conglomeration of dos and don’ts. Learning them may take awhile, but I’m sure it will all begin to make sense with time. Until then, we’ll need to keep up our strength so here’s a recipe to help. -18- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2018

By Kandy Derden, Places to Go Editor DILL PICKLE MEATLOAF

1 egg chopped onion-to taste 1/2 c. dill pickle juice salt and pepper-to taste 1 slice bread, torn into small pieces 1 lb. lean ground beef 1/4 c. chopped dill pickles (or slightly drained dill pickle relish) 1/4 c. ketchup 2 tbsp. water 1 tbsp. brown sugar 1/2 tsp. Worchestershire sauce Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease an 8x8 inch baking dish or loaf pan. Beat the egg in a mixing bowl. Whisk in the onion, pickle juice, salt, and pepper. Stir in the bread until soggy, then mix in the ground beef until evenly combined. Place in prepared pan. Stir together the chopped pickles, ketchup, water, sugar, and Worcestershire sauce; pour over the meatloaf. Bake in preheated oven 1 hour or until no longer pink in the center. Like so many experienced cooks out there, I have never used a recipe for meatloaf. I grew up with the dump and mix method, using hamburger, saltines, eggs and ketchup. This concoction uses a totally different list of ingredients, so if you like to experiment like I do, try using toast instead of bread (or stick with the tried and true saltines) and add your own flair to the seasoning by adding garlic powder, onion soup mix or Dijon. If you like nice, neat slices for serving, drain off any juices half way through baking and then add the sauce on top for the last half of baking time. What ever you do, be sure to double the recipe because your family is going to love it! Perhaps we should get together and compare notes. Let’s have our own mini version of a picklefest with pickle eating competitions, balancing contests, a silly pickle costume parade, judging of creative carving and decorating or we can keep it simple with recipe notes and comparisons. If scheduled after the tournament, we’ll be glad to tell you all about it. I’ll bring the pictures. You bring the meatloaf.

Alexander Hamilton

WASHINGTON, DC, (Newswire.com) - The original pistols used in the infamous 1804 duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr are now on display at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum through June 24. They are featured in the exhibition “Alexander Hamilton: Soldier, Secretary, Icon,” along with mail, portraits, and postage and revenue stamps reflective of Hamilton’s life and career as the first U.S. treasury secretary. The rare public showing represents the first time the pistols have been on public display in the Washington area. -26- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2018

The full exhibition remains on view through next March. Its opening coincides with the June opening of the hit Broadway play, Hamilton: An American Musical, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The musical commemorates his meteoric rise and his sweeping vision for America’s future. The original dueling pistols used by Hamilton, former secretary of the treasury and retired two-star general, and Vice President Aaron Burr in the duel that resulted in Hamilton’s death are on loan to the museum from JPMorgan

Chase & Co. “History remembers Alexander Hamilton as the pioneering first secretary of the treasury, but he was also responsible for the Post Office Department,” said Daniel Piazza, chief curator of philately. “He used the mail to collect import and export data from customs officers all over the country, and his ability to interpret this data made Hamilton the best informed member of Washington’s first Cabinet.” For more information, visit https://postalmuseum.si.edu/ hamilton/

he Outer Banks is a unique place in its environment and culture; thus it deserves a unique place to stay when visiting. Even an upscale motel or hotel won’t have the same vibe as staying in a beachfront home. Our home away from home was a magnificent mansion on the ocean in South Nags Head. It even has a name, Take It To The Limit. It’s 11,000 square feet of luxury living space with more amenities than a five star hotel. There’s an elevator to whisk you to the third floor where you find two hot tubs, a private pool, built in spa and even a Tiki Bar. The view looking out over the pool to the ocean is postcard worthy.. Adjourning are two open kitchens paralleling each other. Emeril and Paula Deen would be right at home with the four wall ovens, two six burner stovetops, two extra large refrigerators, two microwaves and four dishwashers. There is even a pair of master bedrooms on that top level if you want to be near all the excitement. The second floor offers more bedrooms, all with their own bath, and a rec room with a pool table and shuffleboard game. Plus there is another fridge room one level down so everyone can keep their special stash of favorite drinks and snacks. A super large laundry room with three sets of washers and dryers make keeping up with tiresome necessities easy. Down on the first floor you have a theater room with tiered seating for 12 and a wet bar, There’s a

comfy sofa you could easily nap on in the den. As a bonus, you get golf privileges and special rates at the Nags Head Golf Links and Kilmarlic Golf Club. -30- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2018

But there is so much to see and do in the Outer Banks, you may not have time to play golf. You can’t miss visiting the Wright Brothers National Memorial where Wilbur and Orville Wright made their first flight in the Wright Flyer. It only lasted 12 seconds but those seconds changed travel forever. An often forgotten part of the country’s early history happened on Roanoke Island. “The Lost Colony,” an outdoor drama, tells the story of that first English colony in what was then the New World. You can also take a backstage tour to see all hidden magic of a drama that has captivated audiences for 81 seasons. Wine connoisseurs will thrill to see the very first grapevine brought to this country around 1584 by those colonists. The Mothervine is huge and thriving in Manteo on Roanoke Island. The Outer Banks has a long love affair with rum. Kill Devil Rum in Manteo is the first distillery to make it legally. Touring the distillery is a treat you donlt want to miss. Sea salt has become increasingly popular with chefs in recent years. Hatteras Saltworks the brainchild of Brian and Shaena McMahon is the first such operation in the Outer Banks. Its popularity is spreading rapidly for a company only two years old. Oyster farming is not new but the father son team of Bill and -32- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2018

Ryan Belter are doing it their way. As local watermen, they knew where to find the perfect microenvironment in the waters of the sound and started Cape Hatteras Oyster Company. Captain Marc Mitchum is another inventive Outer Banks waterman who had turned his knowl edge of the sea into one of the most fun and informative tours you can take in the Outer Banks. His OBX Crabbing and Shrimping Charter adventure offers a glimpse of the real Outer Banks life of a crabber and shrimper, his off-season job. You join him on his boat, the Jodie Kae, and learn the lore of crabbers and shrimpers. You may see dolphins, osprey and pelicans as well. You will catch several different types of crab and/or shrimp and learn all about the sea creatures. Best part is you can take your catch home and prepare you own fresh seafood in one of those marvelous kitchens. At one time, the Outer Banks were known as “The Graveyard of the Atlantic.” A precursor to the Coast Guard fought to prevent drowning death at Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station since 1874. Their museum is one of the most complete U.S. Lifesaving Stations left in the country. The present station was constructed in 1911. You can see an actual life saving boat and some of the original equipment from the early days. It’s located on Rodanthe so you can stop and view the home used in the movie, Nights in Rodanthe. It’s a private home and for sale at the moment. Lighthouses have always been a big part in preventing shipwrecks. Outer Banks has five lighthouses. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse circa 1870 is the tallest brick lighthouse in the world. It rears 210 feet over the coast of Cape Hatteras. You can climb to the top if your legs will make it. It had to be moved when the encroaching ocean threatened it. The museum tells that story. Incidentally, that beach has been voted number six this year by Dr. Beach. Bodie Island Lighthouse is smaller but worth a visit. Roanoke Marshes lighthouse is a tiny one and not the usual shape. It’s located at the end of the pier on Manteo’s waterfront. Driving in Cape Hatteras National Seashore you have the ocean on one side and the sound -34- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2018

on the other. It is a wonderful place to look for wading birds and other water-loving wildlife. Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge has an interesting museum and a nice hiking trail; there are telescopes for bird-watching. Do bring insect repellant if you walk the trail over the marsh. Days you don’t want to cook there are some great restaurants. O’Neal’s Sea Harvest is a family owned restaurant and market at Wanchese Harbor. They buy from local watermen like Captain Marc Mitchum. Besides their restaurant and market, they ship seafood nationwide. They buy crabs that are about to molt, called peelers, and keep them in water tanks in a facility behind the restaurant until they molt and become soft shelled. You can taste fresh in their soft shell

crab baskets. Coastal Provisions Oyster Bar & Wine Bar Café specializes in oysters. They have many choices besides the oysters and have a retail market if you want to cook their own food. Those with a sweet tooth will love Duck Donuts, which began in the Outer Banks is rapidly spreading nationwide. You order your donuts. They bake them right there and you pick a coating, topping and drizzle. If you are celebrating and want an upscale restaurant, Kimball’s Kitchen at Sanderling Resort on the Soundside of the Sanderling Resort has delicious food and a magnificent view of sunset over Currituck Sound. OBX Trio Wine, Beer & Cheese is a combination bistro and retail outlet that offers some unique cheeses, thousands of wines from around the world as well as local and a rotating array of craft beers. Their WineStation has self-service tasting machines that offer an opportunity to sample 24 wines. Diamond Shoals Restaurant is located almost in the shadow of the Hatteras Lighthouse. They specialize in fresh seafood. My choice is the steamed shrimp. They are big shrimp cooked, with Old Bay and other spices, to perfection. Sam & Omie’s Restaurant in Nags Head is a local favorite breakfast place. They are open for lunch and dinner as well. Blue Water Grill and Raw Bar at Pirate’s Cove Marina is great for waterside dining. Good food and a large raw oyster bar. There is so much to see and do in Outer Banks; you will want to return again and again. June, 2018~ WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM | -35-
