Hayley Carlson; rider, competitor, farm owner, mother, equestrian, - two farms, two competition horses (plus two backup), two kids (Savannah and Corban), and two decades of loving her horses and every opportunity to compete with them, anytime, anyplace, anyhow . . .
At the age of 12, a family friend, leaving town for the warmth of Florida, left her a quarter horse, Cheyenne. She began taking lessons at the oldest horse boarding facility on Long Island, Ketcham Farm, in Fort Salonga NY (circa 1760), and 12 years later moved in with her husband Toby, as the new owners. In the 10 years since then, they have added a second farm in NJ, Ketcham Farm Cream Ridge, named after the first, and a whole world of services and ventures. In addition to the two horse farms, Toby and Hayley own and manage a series of successful earth products and recycling companies across the NY/NJ region. While not a rider himself, Toby has applied his lifelong learning and knowledge of construction, soils and earth products and project management, to the creation of a footing’s and ring design and construction service for the show jumping industry. When not at work, Toby is involved in every facet of the Ketcham farm operations, lending his expertise to construction, mechanical and business affairs and functions of the farm. His energetic and supportive personality adds to the farm’s upbeat atmosphere and success. As a life-long rider, Hayley is the inspiration and passion behind Ketcham Farm. While 52
not competing, Hayley spends much of her time in the saddle helping produce the farm’s younger and upper level jumpers. As a very involved owner, she loves to learn every part of horsemanship that may enable her horses, to compete at the highest levels and thrive on quality care. Over the years of competitive riding, Hayley and Toby have had the opportunity to buy a fair number of horses from breeders throughout Europe. While traveling to some of the most prestigious barns in the Netherlands and Germany in particular, they were constantly struck by the realization that while many of the barn facilities were rather modest by US standards, the footing in both their practice and competition rings was always, without exception superior – of the very highest quality. No barn of any repute would accept anything but the best for their horses. With that in mind, Hayley and Toby began a quest to equip their farm, with the best footing available. Toby’s life-long experience in earth products and Hayley’s experience in competitive riding venues and equine care have allowed them to achieve remarkable results. Ketcham is fast becoming a showcase for the best there is to offer in competitive footing in North America. Toby and Hayley are always eager to have prospective customers visit ride and at the farm. www.EliteEquestrian.us
