BIG WEEK Scales and Tails Forest Park Cub Scout Pack 109 invites families with children from K-5 who are interested in learning more about scouting to a free “Scales and Tails” traveling zoo event on Thursday, Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. at the Roos Recreational Center 7329 W. Harrison St. Children will learn about exotic animals and how to safely interact and meet other scout families and friends in Forest Park.
Honoring Fred Hampton
Raise monarch butterflies
Proviso Township High Schools District 209 will honor the legacy of Fred Hampton, a 1966 Proviso East alumnus and late chairman of the Chicago Chapter of the Black Panther Party, at a ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. The ceremony will be held at Proviso East High School, 807 S. First Ave. in Maywood. This event is free and open to the community.
FRED HAMPTON
Join the monarch migration during “Raising Monarch Butterflies” at the Trailside Museum of Natural History, 738 Thatcher Ave. in River Forest, on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. Come see how the folks at Trailside raise monarch butterflies from tiny eggs to hungry caterpillars to migrating monarchs. You’ll also learn why this is important and how you can help butterflies survive. All visitors over 2 years of age must wear a mask indoors at all times. Unvaccinated visitors should also wear a mask outdoors when physical distancing is not possible. Register for this free family program by calling Trailside at 708-366-6530.
Papermaking craft The Forest Park Library, 7555 Jackson Blvd., invites young adults to an in-person workshop on making paper. Join other creators and crafters in the Young Adult Lounge on Friday, Aug. 27 from 3 to 5 p.m. Register through the library’s website at fppl.evanced.info/signup
Amusement park documentary watch party During the early years of the 20th century, thrill seekers flocked to Forest Park’s shortlived and controversial amusement park. Learn more about its history during a virtual premiere of the new short documentary film “Fast (And Disastrous) Times at Forest Park” brought to you by the Forest Park Historical Society on Monday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. After the 15-minute documentary, filmmaker Anthony Landahl will chat about his research and the new details he uncovered.
