STEP IT UP ABQ

ESPERANZA COMMUNITY BIKE SHOP Esperanza Community Bike Shop

Esperanza means hope. At the Esperanza Community Bike Shop we hope to create a better Albuquerque by promoting bicycle education and transportation. With some basic knowledge and access to the necessary equipment bicycling can be a safe, healthy, dependable, inexpensive, and fun way to get around. The Esperanza Community Bike Shop will introduce people of all ages to the joy and freedom of bicycle riding, and provide opportunities for them to learn how to repair bicycles. At the Bike Shop we will not fix your bike for you; instead, we show you how to fix it yourself. In our classroom, participants will build confidence, critical thinking skills, self-esteem, leadership and life skills. They will also learn what it means to give back to their community - through logging community service hours, participants can earn their own bicycle and also discover they have valuable skills to offer others in need. Operating as a cooperative shop, we will provide affordable ways to acquire and maintain a bike, offer youth programs, encourage re-use and recycling, and work with community groups to get more people on bicycles.

This program will teach the child how to “drive” their bike through a safety talk and hands-on experience. The lessons learned will help the child avoid injuries and how to follow the rules of the road. The program will provide bikes, helmets, props, signs, and the best instructor in the country. Groups must provide at least 15 youth, a smooth surface (parking lot or basketball court) and some adult help. The bike rodeo is a free event offered to all community centers. The Bike Rodeo is approrpriate for children going into 3rd grade through 6th grade. The bike Rodeo will begin witha 45 minute saftey presentation. The groups will rotate in 45 minute increments through the outside portion of the Bike Rodeo. The outside portion consists of the children riding through a simulated road. Cancelations may be appropriate if the weather does not permit it safe to riide, i.e. rain and lightning. If a cancelation occurs at your center our staff will do the inside presentation and accomodations will be made to bring the outside portion of the Bike Rodeo back to the Community Center.

OPEN SPACE About Open Space Division

Open Space works to acquire and protect the natural character of land designated as major public Open Space in the 1988 revised City of Albuquerque Comprehensive Plan. These lands, which are more than 29,000 acres in and around Albuquerque, are managed to conserve natural and archaeological resources, provide opportunities for outdoor education, provide a place for high and low impact recreation, and define the edges of the urban environment. Officers from the Albuquerque Police Department patrol Open Space areas by foot, vehicle, horseback, and mountain bicycle. These fully commissioned law enforcement officers make contact with the public to educate and oversee compliance with rules and regulations. Their dual mission is to protect the Open Space lands and resources while ensuring a safe and enjoyable visit. In addition to these officers, Open Space lands are regularly monitored by volunteers, who are trained to observe and protect the natural characteristics of the environment.

COMMUNITY CENTERS

Veterans Memorial Park

The Veterans Memorial Park is a special place to respect our Veterans past, present and future who have served our country here and other places around the world. The design of the New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial Park is intended to speak to all veterans about their experience. From the moment of decision to become a member in service to one’s homeland, to the return home, veterans share certain experiences and memories. The design evokes those memories. The Memorial Rose Garden is located in the New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial Park at the southern end of Phil Chacon Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is a unique place to recall experiences common to many veterans such as The Call, The Preparation, The Battle, The Conversations, The Word From Home, The Fallen Friend, and The Homecoming. The gardens, the sculptures, and the beautiful Sandia Mountains provide settings for memories, but the memories of the visitors themselves are the true memorial. Covering 25 landscaped acres, the New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial Park provides places for reflection and celebration of those that answered the call.
