Liverpool Irish Festival Line-up announced

Celebrations for the Mersey Army Cadet Force Merseyside Army Cadet Force has been joining the national celebrations which this year marks the 150th anniversary since the founding of the Army Cadets in 1860. It is one of the leading Youth Organisations in the Country with the Queen as their Patron of CADET 150.

On 30th October the Merseyside Army Cadet Force, with its 34 Detachments and 800 cadets, will be honoured with the Freedom of the City of Liverpool when they will march down Castle Street to the rear of the Town Hall for an Inspection and then the historic signing will take place in the Town Hall.

The full line-up for this year’s Liverpool Irish Festival has been unveiled with organisers heralding a return to its musical roots. The festival, now in its eighth year, celebrates the unique links between Liverpool and Ireland and features music, film, poetry, art, sport and educational events.

Comedian Dara O’Briain will take to the stage at the Philharmonic and the Contemporary Urban Centre will welcome dancer Colin Dunne and his Out of Time multi-disciplinary show. A number of Liverpool’s pubs are hosting traditional sessions and ceilis with organisers aiming to make the city come alive to the sounds of Irish music.

Ken Dodd is a great supporter of the Merseyside Military and is with the Knotty Ash Detachment 'Diddy Cadets' promoting CADET 150.

FORMER COUNCIL LEADER TO BE LIVERPOOL’S NEXT LORD MAYOR FORMER LEADER OF LIVERPOOL CITY COUNCIL COUNCILLOR, FRANK PRENDERGAST, HAS BEEN NOMINATED TO BE THE NEXT LORD MAYOR OF LIVERPOOL. The nomination was made following the untimely death of previous Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Rose Bailey, in July. The father-of-five and grandfather-of-four, who also sadly lost his wife Margaret of 41 years in January this year, has pledged to make young people the focus of his year as Liverpool’s first citizen. His pledge comes from his experiences as Project Manager at the award-winning Breckfield North Everton Neighbourhood Council (BNENC). Since 1999 he has worked to provide deprived young people in the area with training opportunities and a wide range of outdoor activities and is, among many other things, a qualified cycling instructor. Councillor Prendergast said: ‘’I am proud to be nominated by my party to be Lord Mayor. There is no higher honour any citizen of Liverpool can be afforded, but I would have preferred it to have been made under much happier circumstances. ‘’Margaret’s passing away has left a large hole in my life and much time for me to fill so I will be throwing my heart and soul into this role. I hope I can carry out my duties in a way that will be a lasting tribute to the memory of Margaret and Rose.’’

New Website launches in Liverpool Insideliverpool.com gives information to cover all aspects such as shopping, news, football events, the waterfront and much more. Set up by Dave Williams, he was fed up going to one site for news and then other sites for football and then another for nights out etc so he put them all into one. The main target market is 13-25 range but they have information for everyone and hope we cover a wide range of people. mCurrently they get in the range of 1500 - 3000 hits a week and have had over 60,000 visitors to the site since they went live in March 2010.

www.insideliverpool.com

Musical highlights include Damien Dempsey with Amsterdam at the Stanley Theatre, Christy Moore and Brian Kennedy at the Philharmonic Hall and Sefton Park Palm House will play host to the London Lasses and Pete Quinn.

Jake Roney, festival director, said: “We’re very proud of this year’s lineup and really think it has something for everyone. After eight years the festival has become something of an institution in Liverpool’s cultural calendar but we’ve put a lot of effort into ensuring it has new, vibrant events along with old favourites. “There is a big focus on music in 2010 - we’ve listened to the feedback of festival goers from the last few years and have increased the number of sessions in pubs around the city so as many people as possible can enjoy a Liverpool Irish Festival experience.” Education continues to play a key role in the festival with the return of heritage walking tours and talks and lectures at Liverpool University’s Institute of Irish Studies. The Liverpool Irish Festival runs from 15 – 31 October 2010. For ticket and event information please visit www.liverpoolirishfestival.com or call the festival hotline on 07804 286 145.

Celebrity Interview

Ellie Goulding rose to fame after topping the BBC Sound of 2010 and winning the Critic’s Choice Award at the BRITS earlier this year. As she embarks on her tour Lifestyle Monthly caught up with her. In an interview with Amanda Moss

ELLIE GOULDING So how are you? I’m great, although looking back it’s been quite a crazy year. Yeah. What was it like winning a Brit Award? I really wasn’t expecting it. I didn’t even know I was up for it until I was at the BRITS that night. It was quite weird because I spent my youth growing up with the BRITS and watching them on TV and then there I was actually winning one. It was a great feeling. Everyone was really nice backstage and it was so nice to be recognised for the music I write and perform. Tell us about your music writing. I have been writing since I was about 15. I never ever felt good enough to be a professional singer, even though it was what I always wanted to be. I was always singing as a kid and I learned to play the guitar but because I never really thought I was that good, I concentrated on other things in school. My family and friends eventually encouraged me to take it more seriously and so I started doing open music nights locally. What was your big break? I think it was winning the BBC Sound of 2010. Again I didn’t know what it was about, I sort of fell into it. I didn’t think it was a big deal but then afterwards people started to pay me more attention. I didn’t celebrate or anything. I sat in the bath and thought about it for an hour or say and went, yeah, great but that was it! What are you looking forward to about going on tour? Being able to play to people and inspire then. I have performed to audiences and seen some people cry when I sing. That is so rewarding to

think that I have touched someone and have been able to influence them. It is really uplifting and I love that. I love my fans, I am so grateful for them. My tour is going to be good fun…. Did you know that I am the most remixed recording artist in history? People love to play around with my tracks. What has music brought you? Freedom for one. I am able to do what I want and that’s really positive. Is there anyone you want to work with? Not really, I am happy just concentrating on my own stuff What music influences did you have growing up? I used to listen to a lot of pop music. Radio One was all I knew, it was always playing in my house. My parents like the Beatles and Dylan but I found music for myself. I was always buying the latest cds and listening to the charts. My mum gave me my pop sensibility though as she was always listening to music around the house. How are you finding fame? I don’t see it really affecting me at all? I have 3 brothers and sisters and I suppose my younger brother thinks it’s cool. But I don’t see it as that awesome. I just live my life quietly writing music.

Ellie Goulding will appear at the Liverpool Guild of Students on Wednesday 10 November

Have you received any weird fan mail? Gosh, not at all, they tend to send me lovely, thoughtful presents. I got a lovely necklace from someone and Percy Pigs from someone else. I even framed a letter that someone sent me, it was so beautiful. I am lucky, I have the best fans ever.

Our fabulous

Jade Ainsworth SHE’S FEISTY, FASHIONABLE AND FUN!!!

Lynne Carville @ Front Cover Studio

This is the most exciting month of the year for the fashion calendar for Liverpool, with the glamorous Lifestyle Monthly Fashion week finally upon us. We have got some really fantastic designers onboard this year to make it a spectacular event. We have the biggest collection of fashion houses showcasing there collection outside of London. All you mums with school children I take my hat off to you. I have just embarked on the dreaded school run... its like the krypton factor, all I do is clock watch from one o clock! I never had a problem being a working mum with the nursery hours but I am really struggling with the school times.

Right chicks and chaps with the arrival of autumn comes the explosion of new colours and textures both in the landscape and the fashion world . It's all about accessorizing this season with hats, scarves, gloves and belts which are great at freshening up last year's coats and cardigans. Don't forget to glamour up your evening with boots not heels!!!!!! For once black is not the new black this winter. Instead the fashion pack have been going crazy for all things camel coloured. Warm and comforting tones of toffee, caramel and cappuccino brown are the way to winter proof your wardrobe for 2010. www.boohoo.com www.lipsy.co.uk

If you are like me and have used the sun bed quite a few times then take a trip to John Lewis and speak to Adele at the Clinque counter as they have brought out a fantastic product that reverses and uv damage and revitalises your skin, reducing any wrinkling that has been caused due to sun exposure. It can be used all over your face as well as the eye area and i would recommend this to everybody as i have only been using it a week and so many people have commented on my skin!!!!

At last the time is upon us for all you North West model wannabe's who fancy a carrer in modelling and are looking for representation as I bring to you Front Cover Models! I am currently scouting the city for some fresh faced talent to make the face of front cover models 2011. The agency website is now live www.frontcovermodels.co.uk and I could not have done it without the help of Zenith Line Solutions (www.zenithonlinesolutions.co.uk), they have been such a massive help 24/7.

The new collections are starting to arrive in all the boutiques now and i was lucky enough to grab some of the Baby Dior Collection at Kathryn's in Old Swan before they sold out. There were also some fabulous pieces by Catimini, Monnalisa and my favourite all time designer is back after a year's break - Oilily!!!! Just in time for my daughters Christmas clothes!

My gadget of the month is my new Sony Vaio E Series Laptop which i got a fantastic deal at pc world. I have had 3 Vaios now but this is my favourite.

DIANE THOMPSON As Fashion Week gets underway we spent 5 minutes with our fabulous fashion week photographer, Diane Thompson from Southport. What kind of photographer do you describe yourself as? A people photographer. I do take pics of a few other things along the way but inevitably there is a person in most of my shots in some shape or form! Where possible, I incorporate natural lifestyle images using natural light but ultimately the event dictates the style of photography required. How do you differ from other tabloid photographers? I’d never ever be looking for the sneaky unflattering shots, that’s not my style! Name some celebrities you have worked with Ooooh you’re asking me to name drop! Can I remain discreet and say, many A list celebs inc Hollywood Royalty and of course footballers and soap stars to name a few. How many parties and events do you attend every week? I love the variety of my job, everyday is different. I could be photographing a portrait, a corporate event or a conference in London, even a wedding and rounding the week of with a celebrity launch party and then spend a couple of days working through the images and doing paperwork. How competitive is photography, when you sell pics to the national press what relationship do you have with the nationals? There is room for everyone and everyone has their niche in the market. I don’t actually syndicate my images through any photo agencies as I am always working for a client which has helped build the trust and respect from high profile clients. I’ve worked hard to build good relationships with a lot of editors so you will see images adorning the pages of regional and national press and magazines including OK! Who is your favourite celebrity to work with? Generally everyone is great and the celebs are fab because they know how to work the camera big time! Now Russell Brand, I never knew what on earth all the girls saw in him until I photographed him, he was soooo charismatic and immaculately groomed, say no more! What are you looking forward to about fashion week? I’m really excited about fashion week, to see what’s hot and what’s not! It’s going to be fun and glamorous with a sprinkling of attitude, it’s the place to be 19th-23rd October. What more can a girl ask for than a week of fashion and shopping! What's the best thing about your job? The people, I’m a real people person and make lots of new friendships. The private portrait and wedding work has so much more emotional attachment therefore the personal rewards are so much higher. I still pop a few tears of happiness with clients when sharing a slideshow with them! It’s also very rewarding to see your images adorning peoples walls or to pick up a national publication and see your images being used, I remember flicking through Tatler magazine once and unexpectedly seeing some of my work, that was great to see! Where do you find your leads? Word of mouth is the best way, when people have great images they share them with everyone else, I’m lucky enough to have loyal clients who keep coming back for more. is there a responsibility with your job to take the most flattering pic? Absolutely always, no-one wants to see an unflattering pic of themselves! My job is to deliver the best pics the client has ever seen. Believe me I’ve had plenty of deleted images that the paparazzi would have loved to get their hands on! Do you think you lead a glamorous lifestyle! It might seem that like that, but me, no! I’m just someone with a camera who loves taking pictures and is lucky enough to get paid for something I love doing.Although I do enjoy dressing up for the posh do’s! What do you think about this whole celebrity culture and our fascination with other people? I like to see what people are wearing on the red carpet but don’t particularly want to read about what they eat for tea, but they do keep us thoroughly entertained with their antics! There is an element of responsibility for the role model that they provide but which not all appear to acknowledge but I’m all for having a bit of fun and reading a bit of gossip! www.foto-foto.co.uk www.dianethompsonblog.co.uk Tel: 01704 571118 Mob: 07812 333208 fotofoto, 26 Hillsview Road, Ainsdale, Southport, PR8 3PN

Any fashion tips for us during fashion week ie is there a type of pose you would recommend for us on the red carpet to make us look more flattering? I’m no fashionista so can’t give any fashion tips but would happily give you tips for a flattering pose on the red carpet, lean slightly forward, chin up and stand slightly side on, don’t lean away from the camera!

Liverpool girl band, Estrella, are through to the final stages of boot camp in this year’s X Factor. Lifestyle Monthly chatted to them ahead of their exclusive performance at the opening night of Fashion Week….

ESTRELLA So who are you? We are four girls, Gemma Davies, 25, a full time singer, Kelly Flannigan, 25, who looks after an autistic boy at a special school part time, Ruth Pike, 20, a dental nurse and Jemma Moon, a professional singer, 23. How did you get together as a band? Gemma: I entered the X Factor in 2005 with a band called Eskimo Bonde and I was through to the final 7. I am a professional singer and wanted to put together a band so I held auditions and I found everyone. So I was working with my friends Lee Butler and Steve Cocky at Radio City, I was mixing some tracks for Hed Kandi, and I bumped into a girl in the toilets and it turned out to be Kelly. We got on really well, she sang for me and it just felt so right. What is it like doing so well on the X Factor? Gemma: It feels so right, it’s nice to get confirmation in life that you are doing something well. I am not in this business to fail, none of us are. It’s nice to be told that we have talent by Simon Cowell. So what is he really like? Gemma: Exactly as you see him on the television. Sometimes you don’t know what he is thinking when you are performing in front of him. He has this look on his face when he is deep in thought, he puts his hand on his chin and he gives nothing away. But after our first audition in front of him, he said that he wished Cheryl could have seen us as he was really excited about seeing us audition. That made us feel really great!

Do you have Simon Cowell’s mobile phone number? Gemma: I wish! What is the your style? Gemma: We are very acoustically based, we are all very strong singers. I like to think of ourselves as En Vogue or Eternal. We all have very soulful voices. We aren’t just another wannabe girl group, we have soul, we are talented and we are so dedicated and focused. Kelly: We have been told that we sound like a female version of Boys to Men which was a fantastic compliment. Ruth: And we are very much in control of our own style as well. We won’t allow anyone to dress us up. Gemma: Although if we get through to the live finals we’re looking forward to some new outfits!

confident yet when I start singing I go all withdrawn. When I auditioned in front of the girls I had to ask them to turn around and close their eyes so they wouldn’t look at me. I have to work on that. Why have you chosen the name Estrella? Gemma: It means ‘star’ in Spanish. I wanted something that wasn’t too long to pronounce and the name just sounds nice, and it’s what we all aim to be. If you get through to the live finals who do you want to be your mentor? All: Cheryl, definitely. She is such a lovely person and she has so much respect for everyone. She really is the nation’s darling.

Who was the nicest judge on the X Factor? Kelly Nicole, definitely. She is lovely. When we were singing she was singing along with us which was nice. She is very easy going and friendly. Working in a group, do any of you have any annoying habits? Ruth:I can sometimes go off pitch Jemma: And I am really loud and

Top Tips for Back Pain Lyndsey Rice, Elite’s Physiotherapist gives lifestyle magazine readers 4 top tips for back pain. 80% of the UK population suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. Anyone who has suffered with back pain will know how much it can affect your life, putting on your socks in the morning, driving the car, standing for long periods, picking up clothes off the floor, simple every day tasks become a real frustration. In most cases there is no serious back problem or disease causing the symptoms; however the exact causes of back pain are unclear. This is called nonspecific lower back pain. In cases of non-specific back pain effective management is key. The prevalence and duration of pain can be reduced greatly by following some basic advice.

1. KEEP MOVING! This is a very important point of advice. Movement prevents inflammation building up which causes further pain and stiffness. It also keeps tissues flexible and prevents muscles becoming weak, each of which can be causes of back pain. Lying in bed causes the opposite of the above = a more stiff and painful back! 2.POSTURE Sitting in bad positions for long periods of time is a common cause of back pain. Our bodies are designed to move so try to avoid static positions for long periods of time wherever possible. - Try to choose a chair that supports your lower back and makes you sit upright - Your hips should be higher than your knee - Try to keep a hollow in your lower back – a rolled up a towel can help you maintain this curve when sitting for long periods. 3. PAIN - NOT BAD! It is very important to understand that pain is not necessarily a bad thing. Pain is your body’s way of telling you something. Our body requires movement or a change in position almost continuously. Lack of movement, i.e. holding yourself rigid because you are frightened of pain, causes a build up of fluid and waste products in the tissues. Your brain interprets this and lets you know by sending pain signals to the area. The solution…………movement! 4. RELAX Lie down in a comfortable and quiet environment for 20-30 minutes. Taking time out enables stiff and tight tissues and muscles to relax, it also gives you time to relieve any worries you may have. It is very important to remember that your back is not badly damaged and it is normal to get aches and twinges from time to time. By staying positive and taking control of your back pain it will limit your everyday life less. These key areas will enable you to be proactive and self manage your back pain. If you would like more advice on back pain and how to eradicate it then give me a call on 07521 952 789 or e-mail me on lyndsey@elitefitnessconsultants.co.uk

ASK THE EXPERT Defending in Welfare Benefit Fraud Cases Public money is tight. The pressure is increasingly on government agencies to recoup money and prosecute “benefit cheats.” In this article, a leading defence solicitor, Gary Lesin-Davis of EAD Solicitors LLP looks at giving you an insight into what steps can be taken when the investigator comes knocking. Usually, the first sign of trouble, is a letter arriving telling you that there is reason to conduct an investigation into a benefit claim and conduct an interview under caution. With it will be a timed appointment for attendance at an interview location. The letter will not detail what is being alleged and the recipient may think their attendance is compulsory. That is not the case and the decision to whether someone should attend or not needs careful consideration. Interviews are formal and taped. The investigator will have prepared the interview, will be invariably experienced. The claimant is unlikely to have experience of such interviews and is likely to be ill prepared for the experience. Therefore, early legal advice is critical. Firstly, the solicitor can contact the investigator before the interview and find out exactly what is alleged this will certainly help his client better understand what is alleged and plan how to deal with the allegations. There may be very good reasons for a person not going to the interview. As with any criminal allegation, it is for the Prosecution to prove guilt not for a claimant to prove their innocence. One of the main aims of the investigators is to obtain from the person being interviewed material that will assist in a Prosecution. The investigators may at an early stage only have suspicions they may not be able to prove. Many a case has been proven by the suspect helpfully volunteering a critical missing piece of the investigator’s jigsaw. The investigators have methods to determine whether persons are living together in the same household. Nowadays, computers in various agencies such as HM Revenue and Customs, DWP and Local authorities and credit reference agencies are available or linked together so that information can be cross checked.

A true and rather amusing case, although not for the Defendant, illustrates how innovative investigators can be in obtaining evidence in these types of case; When a lady revealed to women’s magazines and television chat shows about a condition that caused her to experience up to 40 orgasms a day, the Benefits Agency took a keen interest. The 50 year old woman spoke not only about living with persistent sexual arousal syndrome but also with a 22-year-old lodger. Investigators monitored media coverage and realised that the man she claimed was her lodger, was in fact her lover. In fact, she had been overpaid in benefits after lying on her application. She was prosecuted to conviction. If proceedings are commenced it is important to consider the actual charge faced. This is because what the Prosecution need to prove varies depending on the charges and Act under which it is prosecuted. The question of dishonesty may or may not need to be proved by the Prosecution. The benefit rules are complex and it cannot be assumed that a Defendant understood the rules of entitlement for benefits and thereby knowingly and deliberately failed to report a change in circumstances or indeed that he did so dishonestly. Criminal proceedings are always the cause of anxiety for those charged. The Courts have the power to send people to custody and such sentences are far from unusual. Good legal advice will often make the difference.

One of the headline acts for this year’s Liverpool Music Week, is one of the world’s most iconic electronic acts LEFTFIELD who close the 2010 festival at Liverpool University. After a series of outstanding summer festival performances Neil Barnes returns with a new live show. The band who trailblazed their unique sound in the early 90’s and took John Lydon back to the top of the charts, are back after over a decade. Leftfield’s debut album ‘Leftfism’ was voted ‘one of the greatest albums of all time’ by Q Magazine, and their follow up album ‘Rhythm & Stealth’ went to Number 1 spawning the techno anthem ‘Phat Planet’. Another of this year’s headline acts will be CHASE & STATUS, after a hugely successful outing at this year’s summer festivals. Currently celebrating the

release of their latest hit single “Let You Go”, from their forthcoming (and yet to be titled) 3rd album, they headline the o2 Academy on Saturday 13th November. Another act confirmed for LMW 2010 is the highly acclaimed EFTERKLANG who have recently released their third album entitled Magic Chairs on 4AD. This will be the bands Liverpool debut, and will be flying in from Copenhagen especially to perform during LMW at o2 Academy on Sunday 7th November.

‘Le Sac v Pip’ will take on their biggest Liverpool show yet at o2 Academy on Wednesday 3rd November.

DAN LE SAC VS SCROOBIUS PIP is the next act to be announced for this year’s festival. Since their Liverpool debut at Liverpool Music Week 2007, they have gone on to become one of the best known names in revolutionary new music. On the back of a blistering festival run and their second critically acclaimed album,

Two other acts to play shows at the Stanley Theatre are HADOUKEN and K’NAAN. A huge favourite in the city, dance-rock-ravers Hadouken will follow on from their second album ‘For the Masses’, and make their LMW debut on the Saturday 30th October.

Further hip hop & electronic beats will come in the form of improvisation sensation BEARDYMAN. Having won the UK beatboxing championships twice in a row, winning best MC at the Breakspoll awards, will make his LMW debut on the opening night of this year’s festival at the Stanley Theatre on Friday 29th October.
