Diane Fava D’Errico’s son Keith M. Golden, M.D., Department of Cardiology, was voted “Fellow of the Year” by the residents of University of North Carolina Medical Center. His mother is very, very, proud. Diane also became one of Jenny’s Heroes on October 2, 2008. Jenny’s Heroes is a charitable foundation started by former talk-show host Jenny Jones that awards people who present the best ideas in how to make a difference in their surrounding community. Diane received a grant of $9,000 to provide backpacks, school supplies, coats and boots for children at six domestic violence shelters in Rhode Island.
More than 50 members of the Class of 1975 attended events during Reunion Weekend 2010, with many classmates staying overnight in Julie Hall. Highlights included a Friday night concert on campus, the anniversary Mass for Sr. Janet Eisner’s 30 years as president and our class dinner on Saturday evening. I enjoyed catching up with old friends and pass on some of the details gathered.

By day, Barbara Curtin Graceffa creates web pages for UMass Boston’s McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies. After hours, she uses her design talents in other ways -- she owns and operates a part-time interior decorating business, “Secretary of the Interior.” Her latest client is the Boston Marathon. The Boston Athletic Association (BAA), the folks who put on the Boston Marathon, has commissioned Barbara to make two commemorative quilts celebrating their sister marathon in Ohme, Japan. In 1966, when Japanese-U.S. relations were
still strained following WWII, an Englishspeaking Japanese reporter reached out to the organizers of the Boston Marathon offering to sponsor two U.S. athletes to travel to Japan to run in the Ohme race. Not only did the BAA accept their offer but they also agreed to sponsor two Japanese marathoners in Boston. Forty-four years later, the reciprocal relationship continues; a delegation of Japanese reporters and officials from the Ohme race were in Boston again in April 2010 to cheer on their runners in the Boston Marathon and a representative from each group was given a quilt designed and sewed by Barbara. The quilts incorporate sport shorts, T-shirts, silk marathon ties and embroidered patches from both races as well as Japanese fabrics from table linens, handkerchiefs, and batiks previously gifted to members of the board of directors of the Boston Athletic Association. Each patchwork wall-hanging is approximately 36x72 inches in size. Barbara has won blue ribbons for her quilts in the past and is honored to be associated with this international gift of goodwill. The quilts were presented to the Japanese during a private ceremony during marathon weekend in April. It is expected that at least one of the quilts will hang in the City Hall in Ohme.
