Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Form Guide

The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or / CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.

THE BUZZ

RACE ONE

SHAYEKH made a promising start to his career when passing the post in front at Yarmouth last month, only to be demoted to second place in the stewards’ room. Alice Haynes’ colt holds leading claims on that performance and compensation could await here. Marroof offered something to work with when placing third on his debut at Bath earlier in the month and he’s likely to be in the mix once more. Newcomers Dark Before Dawn and Room Service also warrant consideration.

WIN: SHAYEKH

RACE TWO

DANGER: Marroof

Gold Guy was somewhat underwhelming when finishing down the field at Redcar recently and he may prove worth taking on, despite having sound claims if judged on his runner-up effort on debut at Newcastle in January. PURNIKA should have learned plenty from her racecourse bow when running green at Ayr earlier in the month and she’s likely to improve on that fourth-placed finish. The daughter of Mondialiste gets the vote ahead of Glory Sky, who should appreciate this drop to 7f

WIN: PURNIKA

RACE THREE

DANGER: Glory Sky

There was a lot of encouragement to be taken from PLATINUM GIRL’s runner-up effort on her seasonal debut at Doncaster last month and a reproduction of that performance may be enough to see Tim Easterby’s filly gain a first success today. Midnight Flame finished a fair fourth on her return to action at Catterick in mid-April and a further 2lb drop in the ratings should see her in the mix, while H Key Lails and Slingsbytoo also enter the equation.

WIN: PLATINUM GIRL

RACE FOUR

DANGER: Midnight Flame

SLAINTE MHATH has been in excellent form recently with wins at Redcar and Hamilton sandwiching a second at Thirsk, and connections send her here under a 5lb penalty looking to make the most of the cut in the ground. Mr Trevor didn’t appear to get home over the mile here on his return, but three of his four wins have been over this trip and he could go well, along with top-weight Al Baahy, whose recent Wolverhampton third reads well in this company.

WIN: SLAINTE MHATH

RACE FIVE

DANGER: Mr Trevor

Masque Of Anarchy likes this trip, with six of his seven career wins over the 10f, but he may need a quicker surface to be seen at his best and preference is for DEFERRED, who steps back up in trip after looking outpaced over shorter at Beverley He can go close off the same mark, though both the penalty-carrying Ayr winner Morning Sun and Pontefract fifth Western Stars could also pick up some prize money

WIN: DEFERRED

RACE SIX

DANGER: Masque Of Anarchy

BERT KIBBLER was beaten less than a length at Ayr off this mark last time out and with the number one stall to help him, he could go close for a stable whose horses are running well. Dandy Spirit is looking for a hat-trick after narrow wins over this C&D and at Nottingham but a 5lb penalty may anchor him, leaving Hail Sezer as a bigger danger if he can repeat his all-weather form back on the turf

WIN: BERT KIBBLER

RACE SEVEN

DANGER: Hail Sezer

IRON SHERIFF drew clear of his rivals in decisive fashion in an apprentice contest at Newcastle last time out and it would be no surprise if the five-year-old can repeat that feat in this contest, despite a 7lb hike in the ratings. 2lb of that rise is negated by Jonny Peate now being able to claim his full 5lb allowance and this drop back to a mile shouldn’t pose many problems. Swinging Eddie kept on to lead in the final strides at Beverley last time out and demands respect off 4lb higher while Drakeholes warrants consideration stepping up in trip in these calmer waters.

WIN: IRON SHERIFF

RACE EIGHT

DANGER: Swinging Eddie

KODEBREAKER has been knocking on the door of late and gets the nod to record a fourth career victory. The son of Kodi Bear hit the line with plenty of conviction when third of 17 over 7f last time out at Doncaster and rates a big player off just 1lb higher, with the step up in a trip to suit. Premiership kicked clear of his rivals at Pontefract on his latest outing and rates the most immediate danger off 5lb higher Fiftyshadesofred also warrants respect now eased in grade.

WIN: KODEBREAKER

DANGER: Premiership

LAST TIME OUT | Sunday 30th April

We began the first of our seven race card with the one mile and two furlongs Novice Stakes, which produced a huge surprise as the Tim Easterby trained Miss Havre won at a massive 33/1. It was an impressive performance too as the filly ran out a cosy winner David Allan held her up in the rear early on before switching right and kicking on around three furlongs out. She took the lead inside the final furlong, winning by three quarters of a length to Anjo Bonita in second.

The second of the day’s races saw a 1-2 for the joint-favourite pair of Golden Maverick and Obama Army. It was the former who took the win on the day however, with the Ian Williams trained three-year-old producing a strong performance under a fine ride from William Buick. Brabusach rounded out the podium positions in third. Mahanakhon took the third contest of the day. The David O’Meara trained favourite Westernesse appeared in total control of the race, but Tim Easterby’s Mahanakhon had other ideas. The gelding dug deep and kept on well, finding just enough to take the lead right before the finish line in what was an edge of your seat finish.

Clear Angel justified his strong market support when taking the first, Susan Corbett’s gelding taking keen hold of the race. He hung around in midfield for much

of the contest before kicking into gear in the final two furlongs. His rivals just couldn’t match him and he ran out a comfortable two length winner.

We had another clear winner in the fifth as Roy Browning’s Hiya Maite kept on well to win the Handicap race by two lengths for trainer Roy Bowring. Papa Don’t Preach produced a big shock however, Kevin Frost’s unfancied four-year-old producing a big second at a eye-catching 25/1.

In the days penultimate contest, it was Dandy Spirit who took the win. Roger Fell’s big-priced gelding was prominent throughout under a fine ride from Jonny Peate. He took the lead around the final furlong mark and never relinquished his grip from then on, winning at 14/1. We had a big price at second too as the 20/1 Star Of Aria finished strongly to steal second from the favourite High Opinion by just a nose on the line.

The finale of another day of exciting action saw Ivan Furtado’s Rock N Roll Pinkie secure the win under a great ride from Marco Ghiani. The filly took keen hold of the race in the early goings running well. She was prominent throughout the contest and despite being put under heavy pressure late on, she just did enough to hold on. Cinnodin produced an eye catching performance but was ultimately only able to take second.

MISS HAVRE CLEAR ANGEL MAHANAKHON DANDY SPIRIT ROCK N ROLL PINKIE HIYA MAITE GOLDEN MAVERICK

DARK BEFORE DAWN Longest Traveller: MARROOF trained by R Hannon, Marlborough, 207 miles.

RACE DESCRIPTION This race is a five and a half furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

HORSE WELFARE

Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.

During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

RACE DESCRIPTION This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of seven furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

PLAY SMARTER

A chance is taken on AMERICAN AFFAIR, who needs to improve on what he has shown thus far but this step up in trip offers hope that he will be able to do just that. Gold Guy looked a hard ride at Redcar recently but if the new headgear helps him reproduce something akin to his debut form he will be a big player Purnika needs a close look on the back of her introduction at Ayr, from which there were positives to take, and newcomer Perovskia is one to note in the betting.

THE RESULT

WETHERBY STEEPLECHASE COMMITTEE LTD will present a memento to the winning owner of this race and £50 to the stablehand in charge of the best turned out horse.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59 to 78 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

PLAY SMARTER

MASQUE OF ANARCHY added another victory to his impressive haul when scoring at Pontefract earlier this month and remains feasibly treated. He can score again. Morning Sun was having only his second start for Keith Dalgleish when winning at Ayr last week and is feared most, whilst Western Stars can also make his presence felt.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five and a half furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

PLAY SMARTER

BERT KIBBLER bumped into a well-treated rival when hitting the crossbar at Ayr recently and is taken to go one better off the same mark here. Next on the list is Abate, who has been given a chance by the handicapper and will be a threat if building on his reappearance spin at Thirsk, while Sherdil may also come on for his seasonal reappearance and is respected judged on his 2022 exploits. Dandy Spirit is bound to be popular in his hat-trick bid but has more on his plate here under a penalty.
