Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

Form Guide

The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either - or / CD - Course and distance winner; BF - Beaten favourite; F - Fell; B - Brought down; P - Pulled up; R - Refused; S - Slipped up; U - Unseated rider; R - Ran out.

The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race.

FORM ANALYSIS - A CLOSER LOOK

Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

THE BUZZ

RACE ONE

SINCE DAY ONE was not disgraced when finishing third in the Grade 2 Lightning Novices’ Chase at Doncaster and holds leading claims down in grade. Whistleinthedark created a good impression when winning on his chasing debut in a first-time hood at Market Rasen and he should not be taken lightly despite being officially rated 14lb inferior to the selection. Not What It Seems, who was declared to run at Lingfield on Tuesday, would need to improve if turned out here.

WIN: SINCE DAY ONE

RACE TWO

DANGER: Whistleinthedark

Montgomery made a winning hurdles debut at Fontwell but could be vulnerable under a 7lb penalty. With that in mind, a chance is taken on SOLAR SOVEREIGN who struggled over an extended 2m7f at Uttoxeter last time and can fare better down in trip with Brian Hughes now in the saddle. Technology is entitled to build on his hurdling bow when fifth at Chepstow and is feared most.

WIN: SOLAR SOVEREIGN

RACE THREE

DANGER: Technology

ELOGIO made an early mistake on his hurdling bow when runner-up at Huntingdon recently but compensation could await with that experience under his belt. Bois Guillbert could prove to be the main threat to the selection after his debut win over hurdles at Ayr. Point Franklin is another proven winner but will need to find further improvement to score here, while Clovis Boy is another to note.

WIN: ELOGIO

RACE FOUR

DANGER: Bois Guillbert

The 2021 Scottish Champion Hurdle winner Milkwood struggled in a Grade 2 at Wincanton last time and could improve dropping in grade, but has to carry top weight so

IMPULSIVE ONE shades the vote He is now 2lb above his last winning mark and must enter calculations for powerful connections stepping up in trip Progressive secured an easy victory at Kempton over 2m earlier this month and also warrants a market check

WIN: IMPULSIVE ONE

RACE FIVE

DANGER: Milkwood

Xcitations drops in class having struggled at Doncaster last time, but ROSE SEA HAS lost little in defeat when recording a decent second on his most recent outing over 2m at Hereford He has gone up 3lb for that effort but it may not be enough to stop him here. Prince Escalus is now 1lb above his last winning mark and can give the selection plenty to think about.

WIN: ROSE SEA HAS

RACE SIX

DANGER: Prince Escalus

EAST STREET went down narrowly over C&D last month and could gain quick compensation here. The Sue Smith-trained gelding has adapted well to fences and, given that he responded well to the retained cheekpieces on that occasion, the seven-year-old is hard to oppose Cash To Ash (third) was 10 lengths behind the selection that day but could get closer now, while Juniper may be suited by dropping in trip and completes the shortlist.

WIN: EAST STREET

RACE SEVEN

DANGER: Cash To Ash

White Rhino scored on his handicap debut at Southwell last week and is respected turned out quickly under a penalty. However, BUSHMILL BOY looks a real threat on these terms following an encouraging effort at Sedgefield and he edges the vote back up in trip Red Ochre is also shortlisted after a solid effort here last month, while Millie Of Mayo merits consideration on her return to action.

WIN: BUSHMILL BOY

DANGER: White Rhino

Wetherby Millennium Stand

Seven races took centre stage as Wetherby was treated to another exciting day of action.

The day’s opener saw Get Up Mush win with ease for the Skelton brothers. The five-year-old won gamely having been towards the back and a two out took the lead despite hanging in his running. He kept on well and went 1 ¾ lengths clear of the tiring Cerendipity, who ran prominent, unfortunately not having enough left to truly compete with the winner. The leader Snowy Evening secure third after some poor jumping.

The short favourite Our Jet was beaten in the next as the Venetia Williams trainer Gemirande took home the prize. Gemirande never looked under trouble as he made all and went clear from three out, despite not jumping fluently he still kept on well. Back in second place there was another promising performance from War Lord under Brendan Powell. He was held up in the rear and was ridden to go second coming into the last The favourite Our Jet was back in third. Favourites were back winning in the third race as the 8/13 Ruby Island came in, in style. The Mark Walford trained Bay kept on the significant winning margins from the prior race. She won by five lengths after being held up in midfield before being pushed by Jamie Hamilton to take on the leader Jane Du Berlais After three furlongs out Ruby Island took the lead and kept on well from second placed Hashtag Boum but she never posed much of a threat.

In the fourth the favourite, Ballygrifincottage got pulled up after leading narrowly. This was swiftly taken on by Bellatrixsa, chased by City Chief. In the latter stages of the race City Chief led and went well clear before making a mistake three out but this didn’t stop him from winning again by the margin of five lengths to O’Toole that

had been raced in last and again made some errors in jumping but was no match for the Nicky Henderson winner.

The winner of the fifth didn’t have an easy run in for Mitchell Bastyan as he was held up in the rear alongside the eventual second Universal Folly for most of the race. At three out Pyramid Place began to move eventually he and most of the rest of the field overtook the last placed Daly Tiger. Pyramid Palace kept on well and there was no closing in on him.

In the penultimate race of the day saw hunt members take to the track in for the hunter chase. This again saw the favourite romp home for Dan Skelton giving him a double on the day. It looked after the last fence like Moratorium would be ridden to press but Not That Fuisse after being shaken up found a new gear and kicked again to keep on well. Leaving Moratorium for the spoils and the rest of the field fourteen lengths behind.

To round off the day there was a surprise in the Open Maiden National Hunt Flat Race as the 40/1 shot came in for trainer Laura Horsfall and jockey Charlie Price. Long Symphony took keen hold of the race and led after seven furlongs. This gave the Mahler offspring an easy trip for most of the race before, he was challenged at one furlong out by Paddy O’Mahler before he kicked again and Mr Bramley went to chase. In the closing stages it was a closer contest between the minor places which was taken by a neck by Mr Bramley over Paddy O’Mahler.

RACE DESCRIPTION This two miles hurdle race has been designed for novice four-year-olds which haven’t run in a flat race, any race prior to 1st October 2022 or not run in more then three previous hurdle races. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden.

GREAT

ELOGIO, a winner of his sole outing in bumpers, didn’t really get the opportunity to show what he could do on his Huntingdon hurdling debut following early interference, so he’s well worth another chance for his in-form stable. Bois Guillbert appeals as the sort to go on progressing being a scopey sort and is feared most.

Longest Traveller: MILKWOOD trained by N Mulholland, Limpley Stoke, 231 miles.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 145. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

PLAY SMARTER

This has an open feel to it with IMPULSIVE ONE just about the most persuasive option with this trip expected to suit. Progressive, a former stablemate of the selection, goes unpenalised for last week’s win but dominating over 2m looks his ideal scenario, so Pyramid Place, a recent C&D winner, is feared most.

Longest Traveller: PRINCE ESCALUS trained by J O’Neill, Cheltenham, 170 miles.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 140. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

HORSE WELFARE

Here at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance.

During the race three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys.

It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a three miles handicap steeple chase for five-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb

THE MIGHTY ARC: Following its run on 26/12/2022 it was reported that the horse was never travelling.

JUNIPER: Following its run on 29/1/2023 it was reported that the horse was unsuited by the tight track.

FEIVEL: Following its run on 27/1/2023 it was reported that the horse suffered accidental interference.

CHRIS COOL: Following its run on 6/2/2023 it was reported that the horse was p.u after erring badly

Probable S.P’s: 9-4 East Street (IRE), 9-2 Juniper (GB), 5-1 Cash To Ash (IRE), 7-1 Feivel (IRE), 9-1 The Mighty Arc (IRE), 12-1 Hold The Note (IRE), 14-1 Chris Cool (GB)

EAST STREET showed improved form in first-time headgear when just edged out over C&D last month, doing little wrong despite failing to get the job done having traded as low as 1.04 in-running, and remains of strong interest after only 3 starts over fences. Cash To Ash finished 10 lengths behind the selection that day but is 7lb better off here, so is entitled to make more of a race of it. The Mighty Arc is becoming well handicapped so is another to consider

THE RESULT

WETHERBY STEEPLECHASE COMMITTEE LTD will present a memento to the winning owner of this race and £50 to the stablehand in charge of the best turned out horse.
