Race Description
This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Plenty arrive with claims in the opener, including low-mileage 6-y-o HONESTLYNTRUFULLY. He ran easily his best race over hurdles when runner-up on handicap debut at Plumpton last month and could be worth chancing to build on that up in trip from such a low mark. Fontwell scorer That Ole Chestnut, handicap debutant Per Vino Veritas and Elleon head up the dangers.

The feature contest on today’s seven-race card is the competitive Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Handicap Hurdle, a class 2 contest which has been won in each of the past two years – and four times since 2014 – by Paul Nicholls.
The champion trainer saddles Birds Of Prey who boasts course form figures of 221137. He never seemed happy here last month, possibly finding the ground a little softer than ideal, but has since been dropped 5lbs. Last-time-out winners Timberman and Fontana Ellissi are sure to be popular, although whether or not the ground has dried out sufficiently for the former (prefers good ground) remains to be seen. Fergal O’Brien’s Kempton winner was a nonrunner at the same track over Christmas and more recently at Catterick, so has clearly been waiting for a sounder surface. Sam Drinkwater’s runner wouldn’t want it too testing either and following a 5lbs rise for this month’s Ffos Las win, finds himself in a much more competitive grade. Zambezi Fix is versatile in terms of ground and ran a sound race when runner-up at Sandown last time. He finished in front of Mack The Man (declared at Carlisle on Monday, so not certain to run here) on that occasion and he filled the same spot at the same track in Listed company in early-December. His form has a solid look to it and he will be partnered by the in-form Ben Jones, fresh from a Sandown double last Thursday and winning Haydock’s Grand National Trial 48 hours later. Olly Murphy’s Restandbethankful was pulled-up swiftly earlier in the month at Musselburgh, having previously won in good style at Huntingdon. He is another who would prefer good ground, whilst the top pair are fascinating, on the back of lay-offs. Langer Dan hasn’t been seen since finishing runner-up to Galopin des Champs in the Martin Pipe, having earlier won the Imperial Cup off a 10lbs lower mark. He is the class-act in the field and should appreciate the revised trip (an extra 153 yards have been added for rail movements). With Lorcan Williams retaining the ride, this race could put him spot on for another tilt at the Martin Pipe, with his fourth placing behind Ajero this time last year seemingly teeing him up for the following month. Kim Bailey’s runner is actually 4lbs better off with Langer Dan here and has gone well fresh in the past. He hasn’t been in the best of form this season, but is at his best on a flat, right-handed track such as this. Weatherbys are also pleased to sponsor the previous race, the 0-120 Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Handicap Chase, in which the Venetia Williams-trained Brianstorm heads the weights. A novice hurdle winner at this track three years ago, he remains a maiden over fences but ran well against an in-form rival under similar conditions last time and his second to Ask Me Early at Uttoxeter from last March also reads well. With the stable in such good order, he should go close if putting his best foot forward (hasn’t always been the most consistent). Premiumaccess should appreciate stepping back up in trip and might well come on for his recent return at Fontwell (first start in 318 days), whilst the distance is an unknown for the consistent Esprit de Somoza, who finished strongly over 2m4f last time. He has 2¾ lengths to find with Larkbarrow Lad on that running and Philip Hobbs’ runner – who carries the silks of Stayers’ Hurdle hope Thyme Hill – is also fairly consistent. It is a long time (October 2019) since he won a race, however, and he is another maiden over fences Of the remainder, Millbank Flyer is completely unexposed, but comes on here on somewhat of a retrieval mission and takes a huge step up in trip.
