Race Description

This two miles and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 135. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

PLAY SMARTER The forecast quick ground won’t be an issue for EBONY GALE, who is much the most likely winner given the defection of No Anxiety. Recent evidence would suggest that Young Turk is not the force of old and he looks set for another struggle.

Horse Welfare

Horse welfare is a priority at Taunton Racecourse. At every meeting there are 3 specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons appointed to look after the welfare of the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. A second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and horse some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

The South-West Racing Club is an independent organisation, formed in 1979 whose sole aim is to encourage interest in all aspects of horse racing, particularly in the South-West. The Club is run by a Committee of volunteers and its members are drawn from all walks of life. Membership costs a mere £15 per person annually with junior members (under 16) paying only £5. Apart from supporting the local courses, the Club has organised trips to Aintree, Ascot, Cheltenham, Ireland, France and Prague for the famous Velka Pardubicka. Stable visits have included Rebecca Curtis, Alan King, Dan Skelton, Martin Keighley, Venetia Williams and Nicky Henderson. This year we plan to visit Paul Nicholls followed by Wincanton races; “Greatwood” followed by the Hunter Chase meeting at Cheltenham; Stratford with a stable visit en route to either Nigel Twiston-Davies or Charlie Longsdon and in October, Ireland. This trip will include racing at Clonmel and Gowran Park as well as stable visits to Jessica Harrington and Henry De Bromhead. WHY NOT JOIN WHY NOT JOIN US NOW!US TODAY!
