THE MARTIN DENSHAM MEMORIAL

British EBF Maiden Stakes

Martin Densham was a most popular fixture at Sandown Park for more than 30 years. His father, Pat, founded the family Bookmakers firm of SUNDERLANDS in the mid-1940s and the name continues to be represented on the racecourses to this day. Martin joined the family business in about 1977 and was responsible for the long lasting and popular Sunderland Bonus attached to the winner of the Imperial Cup run at Sandown Park in March of each year, if that horse could win any race at the Cheltenham Festival the following week. This initiative has added significant interest and betting activity to the historic Imperial Cup and has been paid out three times during its history.

Martin embraced a distinctive style operating from the senior pitch ‘on the Rails’ at most racecourses. He was a larger than life character much loved by his clients and was a very generous host when entertaining clients who became fi rm and loyal friends.

Prior to becoming an old fashioned credit clients’ and racecourse bookmaker, Martin had a versatile and varied career from briefl y being a male model while living in Australia, through to living in Bordeaux when he had entered the wine trade, an activity he much enjoyed, and then, fi nally, the gregarious and ever popular bookmaker who added colour and conviviality to the horse racing and sports betting scene. Martin, for over 30 years, had been a leading member of the Charity Guild of the Nineteen Lubricators which had been formed in the late 1930s by members of the oil industry.

The winning connections of the Martin Densham Memorial race will receive a perpetual trophy commissioned by the Guild of the Nineteen Lubricators of a solid silver sculpture of a Sunderland Flying Boat, an aircraft fl own by Pat Densham during the Second World War, and the inspiration for the business name of Sunderlands Bookmakers.

Paddington (Siyouni) may have begun his Classic campaign in handicap company but he proved himself as a colt from the very top drawer when holding off the persistent challenge of filly Emily Upjohn (Sea The Stars) to land his third Gr.1 triumph of the year in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown yesterday.

Only four runners went to post in this prestigious 1m2f event, prompting speculation that it would tun into a tactical, slowlyrun affair, but Jamie Spencer allayed those fears by setting a solid pace aboard West Wind Blows (Teofilo), who stretched a couple of lengths clear rounding the home turn and was still in front passing the two furlong pole It was at this point that Paddington poked his head in front, but Emily Upjohn was soon by his side, a filly who was already proven over 1m 4f, whereas Paddington had never before been asked to go further than a mile.

Paddington however, kept going forward, despite carrying his head to one side as usual, and the challenger never really looked

PLAY SMARTER

SURREY BELLE looked ahead of her opening mark when runner-up at Ffos Las 23 days ago and she’s taken to prove the point. Kamanika is an obvious danger on the back of her success at Leicester and both Loughville and Showy appeal as interesting handicap debutantes.

Whatever your tastes, the most important thing when choosing your outfit is, of course, comfort and confidence. RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Sandown Park Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
