2022: FORTAMOUR (IRE) 6 9 9 Paul Mulrennan 13-8 (Ben Haslam) 8 ran

Blinkers worn first time by No 2. Visor worn by No 4, 9. Tongue Strap worn by No 2.

Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No 6.

Stewards Note: MUSCIKA: Following its run on 20/4/2023 it was reported that the horse hung right handed. Betting Forecast:

10-3 Fortamour (IRE), 4-1 Count d’Orsay (IRE), 6-1 Twelfth Knight (IRE), 10-1 Muscika (GB), 11-1 Rich Waters (IRE), 12-1 Mark’s Choice (IRE), May Blossom (GB), 14-1 Selby’s Pride (GB), 16-1 Shallow Hal (GB)

It’s been a while since COUNT D’ORSAY last got his head in front but this is a lower-grade handicap than those he is used to contesting, and there were positives to take from his latest effort at Beverley. He gets the nod ahead of Fortamour, who likes it here and looks dangerous on the back of an encouraging effort last time Twelfth Knight is best of the rest.

Race Description

This is a one mile and one furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

TIMEFORM VIEW Placed in a couple of AW handicaps towards the end of 2022 but wasn’t at his best on final outing, so needs to get back on track now returning to turf after a break. On the plus side, this does represent a drop in grade.

DECLARED RUNNERS 7 2022: BILLY ROBERTS (IRE) 9 9 4 Phil Dennis 14-1 (Simon Whitaker) 8 ran Tongue Strap worn first time by No 4. Hood worn by No 4. Visor worn by No 7. Tongue Strap worn by No 5. Sheepskin Cheek Pieces worn by No 2, 6.

Stewards Note: BOLLIN MARGARET: Following its run on 27/4/2023 it was reported that the horse suffered interference in running.

Betting Forecast:

3-1 Bit of A Quirke (GB), 4-1 Bollin Margaret (GB), 9-2 Bushfire (GB), 5-1 Bertie’s Wish (IRE), 7-1 Cedar Rapids (IRE), 10-1 Billy Roberts (IRE), 25-1 Grifter (GB)

PLAY SMARTER

BERTIE’S WISH is potentially well treated back on the Flat given his recent hurdling form and, with his stable very much among the winners of late, he appeals as the most persuasive option. Bollin Margaret endured a disappointing 2022 but has dropped to a handy mark as a result and caught the eye on her reappearance. Bushfire is still lightly-raced for Gemma Tutty and is another to consider dropping in grade.

Race Description

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds only which have been rated from 46 to 55. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
