WELCOME

Welcome to the Season Finale, Ladies Day

And what a way to finish the season, with seven races, Best Dressed competitions for Ladies, Gents and Children with some fantastic prizes, great children’s entertainment and after racing a live DJ playing with a live saxophonist, so make sure you stick around for some après-racing fun!

Today we have 61 runners going to post with total prize money of £73,999 on offer. Our feature on the track today is the £20k Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Conditional Jockeys’ Training Series Handicap Hurdle (Class 3) (Racing Excellence Series Finale) which was won last year by Thibault. This year, we have 7 closely matched runners head to post for what looks a fantastic renewal and we wish them all the best.

We couldn’t make this day a success without our fantastic partners and today we have our loyal sponsors in the Sargent, Mellett, Brown, Carr and Mendoza families along with Weatherby’s, Extech and J H Builders

have a brilliant day and thank you for your support. We also have some great prizes for the Best Dressed Competitions donated by Holland Cooper, Nichola Massingale Flora Art, Buxted Park Hotel, Profiles Health and Beauty Salon, Heath London, Burridge London, Long Man Brewery and Westbrooks Family Farm – a big thank you for your contributions.

To have a go at winning these competitions, we have a detailed schedule in the racecard so please do scan through and make sure you don’t miss it if you plan to enter.

The 2022/23 season has been extremely positive, with fantastic racing and titanic finishes and we have seen the crowing of new champions for the Sussex National (Atakan), Sussex Champion Hurdle (Teddy Blue) and Sussex Champion Chase (Black Jerry). Across the 15 racedays that took place this season we have had over 730 runners with total prize money exceeding £1.3m with many different owners, trainers and jockeys all being successful and entering the hallowed winner’s enclosure. Off the track our retired racehorse stable has been a huge success and visited by 1000’s of people who have been fortunate to get up close with some previous equine stars, notably Champagne Fever, Baron Alco and Ding Ding and our family days have also been a great success and it is tremendous to see so many young people visit the track.

It is a busy day, and both of our enclosures are open, with our Style Competition and Family Entertainment located in the Centre Course so all ticket types have access to these features. We have a map detailing all our activities in the racecard so please take a look. There is plenty going on for all the family besides the 7 fantastic races on course and so all fingers point towards an exciting day.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff who have worked tirelessly across the season, along with our sponsors and members and those who have visited Plumpton and made the 2022/23 season a huge success. Can I also wish everyone a good summer and we look forward to welcoming you all back for our new season, which starts again on 24th September. Between now and September there will be other events happening at the racecourse so please keep an eye open by visiting our website www.plumptonracecourse.co.uk

Have a great day.

Best wishes

CUSTOMER INFORMATION

Horse Care at Plumpton

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by:

Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

Unauthorised Bookmaking

It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.

On-Course Bookmakers at Plumpton – Late Pay Service

If you need to claim winnings from an on-course bookmaker after a raceday, please send your ticket and covering letter to the following address:

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a suffi cient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confi rmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefi xed by the letter h.

BETTING INFORMATION

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

1. Pick your winner!

Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. Where to place your bet

– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.

– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

3. Place your bet

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:

Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off

– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings

Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’. If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS

All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:

(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win;

(b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2;

(c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2;

(d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3;

(e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3;

(f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and

(g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4?

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.

If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Oliver Sherwood won the National Hunt flat race on this card 12 months ago courtesy of Times Are Blue and the Lambourn-based handler bids to repeat the dose at 4.50 today with Mountain Pass.

Local trainer Gary Moore does well here and having won three of the last seven runnings of this race, he might add another success with ANGEL’S DREAM. He won in France but has yet to live up to expectations over here after coming home a distant third at Newbury and Huntingdon. This tight track may play to his strengths and he can hopefully prove too good for Newbury second Up For Appeal and Market Rasen third Wonderweasle.

SELECTION; ANGEL’S DREAM Danger - Up For Appeal

Lawtop Legend won a division of this race off a mark 3lb lower in 2021 and although pulled up on his last two starts, they were over fences and he returns to hurdles here. Hatchet Jack was second at Fontwell last month and is another to consider, but SANDALWOOD may be able to successfully give weight away all round. Disqualified for interference after ‘winning’ at Taunton, connections will be looking for recompense here and, with first-time blinkers applied, they could succeed.

SELECTION; SANDALWOOD Danger - Lawtop Legend

ALTO ALTO is 7lb worse off with Not Another Muddle on their meeting here over shorter last month, but he did win going away at the finish and may have even more to offer after just the three starts over fences. Trevada makes his debut over fences and is bred for the part so he could go well for a stable in form, leaving Warwick third Small Bad Bob as an alternative for the places.

SELECTION; ALTO ALTO Danger - Not Another Muddle

An emphatic winner over an extended 2m1f at Fontwell last month, Tara Iti looks sure to be in the mix off a 5lb higher mark, despite the drop in trip. However, he has lacked consistency of late, so EXECUTIVE POOL shades the vote. The gelded son of Churchill recorded a facile success over this trip at Hereford most recently and he could defy a 5lb rise to secure a double here. Glance At Me also looks capable of having a say in proceedings.

SELECTION; EXECUTIVE POOL Danger - Tara Iti

This could go the way of the unexposed QUEENS ROCK, who bolted up over an extended 2m3f at Doncaster on her most recent outing in February. She is rated 11lb higher for that success, but Nicky Henderson’s six-year-old left the impression there is more in her locker and she is taken to add to her tally. Hell Red switches back to timber and is feared, while Ashington is another to bear in mind.

SELECTION; QUEENS ROCK

Danger - Hell Red

Henschke bounced back to form when finishing a good second at Warwick last month and although he merits respect from an unchanged mark, DALKINGSTOWN shades the vote. Peter Bowen’s charge came up short on his hat-trick bid at Cartmel 300 days ago, but he has won following a similar absence in the past and remains fairly handicapped. Faustinovick continues to run well in defeat and is likely to be on the premises once more.

SELECTION; DALKINGSTOWN Danger - Henschke

A TICKATICKATIMING is yet to finish out of the places from her three starts in bumpers and this presents the ideal opportunity for the Sixties Icon mare to get her head in front. Mikhaila and Buck Of Maine make appeal on paper and both warrant a market check ahead of their respective debuts, while recent point-to-point runner-up Stowford may also possess the ability to play a leading role.

SELECTION; TICKATICKATIMING Danger - Mikhaila

LAST MEETING REVIEW

Racing on Sunday 23rd April began with an impressive victory for the short-priced favourite, Telhimlisten in the first. The Jennie Candlish trained gelding went clear from three out before running out an easy winner by fourteen lengths under a good ride from Luca Morgan. Gary Moore’s Not Another Muddle was the only other to complete but after weakening from three out, proved no match for the winner. Saved By The River was pulled up after losing his right-fore shoe.

The second proved to be more competitive, with Milton Harris’ Highland Frolic securing the win by a length and a half from the Gary Moore trained Aviles. The four-year-old did well under some late pressure before going clear in the run in to secure the first win of his career at the twelfth attempt.

Doyen For Money seemed to relish the slight step up in trip, scoring for the first time since his debut in February 2022. He kept on well, just holding off Independence to win by half a length, the first-time tongue strap clearly a benefit. George Baker’s Hello Sunshine was prominent throughout and rounded out the podium positions.

Robert Walford and Bryan Carver joined forces to take the fourth race as Tip Top Mountain won by two and three quarter lengths. His jumping was a touch suspect as he was jumping right throughout but he did enough, going clear approaching the last. It was Andy Irvine’s Gold Clermont, who won here last time, running in second after staying on well.

The fifth produced an edge of your seat finish as the Neil Mulholland trained Crossing The Bar just snatched the win from Ramo by a neck after an excellent ride by Richie McLernon. The six-year-old was held up in the rear for much of the contest before challenging two out, finally taking the lead in the final strides.

The penultimate race saw Oliver Sherwood’s Jersey Lady stay on well under some late pressure to score over the Anthony Honeyball trained Captain Claude. It was a strong ride from winning jockey Miss Victoria Malzard, who kept her ride in touch with the leaders before making her move about three out.

The days finale saw the team of Neil King and Jack Quinlan come together as Linda Moon secured a hard-fought victory in the bumper by three quarters of a length. Making just her second start, the filly ran well and managed to go one better than her debut second. Sheena West’s A Tickatickatiming led for much of the contest but was caught just over a furlong out and could only manage second.

The Knocknanuss Memorial Maiden

Hurdle

On this card six years ago, Knocknanuss bolted up in the maiden hurdle, a great start to his sadly all too brief career. He won again over hurdles but was born to chase, making his eagerly anticipated debut back here in 2018. His exuberant style got the better of him as, pulling like The Duke Of York in a Pizza Express, he tipped up at the tricky fence down the back.

He then produced a devastating performance at Newbury, making all in the Fulke Walwyn Trophy to win by an eased down 17 lengths Far behind were future graded winners yet, unbelievably, he would never win again.

His owners were starting to lose sleep, a condition that worsened significantly after possibly his best performance in Plumpton’s ’novice chase of the century’. For some reason, French superstar Master Dino also turned up; Knocknanuss led for most of the way, run out of it after the last. Again, future graded winners were beaten out of sight behind.

A controversial fall at the second was scant reward for a trip to the Irish Arkle, followed by a disappointing 5th in the Arkle and at Aintree, when he was over the top for the season He started 2019 with a great performance to push Saint Calvados all the way. He was then finally stepped up in trip, a plan that was going perfectly, as in Cheltenham’s Caspian Caviar Gold Cup, he was still cantering when something went terribly wrong at the tenth fence. He never got back up.

He could have been a superstar; sadly we will never know. Expertly trained by Gary Moore, and ridden with extreme patience and bravery by Jamie, often riding in a bitless bit at home as he pulled so hard. He flickered briefly but brightly, and will always be remembered by his friends

EXECUTIVE POOL had a bit in hand when winning at Hereford and has the scope for better still based on Flat form, so he’s worth siding with ahead of his stablemate Tara Iti, who also arrives on the back of success at Fontwell. Glance At Me should also go well again.

CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS’ TRAINING SERIES HANDICAP HURDLE RACE

Weatherbys sponsor the fifth race on the card on Plumpton’s Ladies’ Day, a Class 3 conditional jockey’s handicap hurdle over 2m4½f.

Seven go to post here and the weights are headed by Royaume Uni, who represents the Gary Moore stable The six-year-old son of Galileo won here at Plumpton back in 2021 and finished second over course and distance in October of last year, so he handles the track well. He unseated on his latest run at the first hurdle and connections will be hoping he can bounce back from a tempting mark here, as he continues to drop down the handicap, and he is now just 4lbs above his last winning mark.

Hell Red shares top-spot in the weights, and reverts back to hurdles here after a successful novice chase campaign last season. Busy throughout the summer months in 2022, Paul Nicholls’ six-year-old won four of his six starts between May and September before returning this April with a victory in a match race That run will have likely stripped him fit for this contest, but he does have to reverse a seven-length defeat back in March 2022 by the reopposing Royaume Uni.

Ashington is another who had his last start over the larger obstacles and returns to hurdles here after finishing third at Perth. A consistent performer, he finished inside the top three on five occasions last season and bids to enter the winners’ enclosure for the first time for trainer Mark Walford.

Jack Hogan finished fourth in the Conditional Jockeys Championship after a stellar season, and his services are called upon here by Nicky Henderson for the ride on Queens Rock. The sole mare in the field, she looks to be the most unexposed among the seven runners, winning two of her three starts over hurdles. She was impressive last time at Doncaster when running out a comfortable six-length victor and is a six-year-old who looks to be progressing in the right direction.

The nine-year-old Master Debonair is the oldest horse in the line-up, and he has a Grade 2 Supreme Trial Novices’ Hurdle on his resume from his days with Colin Tizzard back in 2019 Although he has yet to get his head in front since that day, a mark of 121 with regular pilot Ellis Collier on board could be tempting for a horse once rated 151 as a novice.

Toby Wynne is unable to utilise his claim in this contest, but he takes the ride on Sami Bear, who has raced here at Plumpton on six occasions, winning once. He showed real determination to win at Kempton on his penultimate start and he returns back to Plumpton here for Chris Gordon, who won this contest in 2019

Five-year-old Hasty Parisian has won just once over hurdles but has run well in defeat on both of his last two starts, finishing fourth in a strong Ascot handicap before finishing third at this track over the extended trip He drops back in trip here and has been rated as high as 116, and could take advantage of a sliding mark.
