RACE DESCRIPTIONS
1:20 RACING POST SUPPORTS GO NORTH WEEKEND MAIDEN HURDLE (GBB RACE)
The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two miles, one and a half furlongs race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today
1:50 THE RACING TV GO NORTH LADY BUTTONS MARES’ HURDLE SERIES FINAL (CLASS 2) (A HANDICAP HURDLE RACE) (NHMOPS BONUS RACE) (GBB RACE)
This is a two miles and four furlongs mares’ handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have started in at least two Go North Lady Buttons Series Qualifiers during the current season In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.
2:25 THE RACING TV GO NORTH GREY BOMBER JUVENILE HURDLE SERIES FINAL (CLASS 2)(A HANDICAP HURDLE) (GBB RACE)
This is a two miles, one and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have started in two Go North Grey Bomber Juvenile Hurdle Series races during the current season To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 130 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125.
3:00 THE RACING TV GO NORTH BRINDISI BREEZE HURDLE SERIES FINAL (CLASS 2)(A HANDICAP HURDLE RACE) (GBB RACE)
This is a three mile handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have started in at least two Go North Brindisi Breeze Series Qualifiers during the current season Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.
3:30 THE RACING POST GO NORTH SEA PIGEON HURDLE SERIES FINAL (CLASS 2) (A HANDICAP HURDLE RACE) (GBB RACE)
This two miles, one and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which have started in at least two Go North Sea Pigeon Series Qualifiers during the current season In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
4:00 THE DAIKIN AIR CONDITIONING UK NOVICES’ HANDICAP HURDLE (GBB RACE)
The penultimate race this afternoon is a two miles and four furlongs novices’ handicap hurdle race for four-yearolds and upwards which have been officially rated 0-110. The weight that each runner carries is determined by their official handicap rating. In this instance, a horse rated 100 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.
4:30 THE MARK MILLER NEVER STANDING STILL MARES’ OPEN NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (CATEGORY 2 ELIMINATION) (GBB)
As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time; only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run. If they have previously run on the flat or in hurdle races or steeplechases (except for point-to-points), they are barred from entry This particular contest is restricted to fillies and mares aged four, five and six and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs.
