I must also say thank you to all of the Owners who have declared horses to run with us

HOW TO PLACE A BET

PLACE YOUR BETS....

Betting is quite straightforward and can be fun - for as little as £2 There is no fool proof way of picking a winner; the odds and the racecard can give you a good guide but you can also have as much luck picking your horse by the name or colour of the silks.

BET IN TWO WAYS -

1. Betting with the tote - a quick, easy and friendly service You’ll find tote betting points all around the racecourse and it will give you a better choice of bets with the lower minimum stake of £2. Look at the counters for the tote how to bet guides

2. Bookies - these are all in front of the Grandstand and take only two bets TO WIN and EACH-WAY The bookies offer ‘odds’ on all the horses and you are best to shop around for the best odds. These are given in fractions, such as 8/1.

HADWINS MARES SERIES

Donald McCain strengthened his grip in the race to claim the £1,000 bonus prize attached to the Hadwins Mares series when he took latest round with Titanium Moon at Cartmel’s Sunday meeting earlier this month

It was the second time Titanium Moon had won a round of the series in the hands of three-times champion jockey Brian Hughes, and it leaves McCain 18 points ahead of his nearest rivals with just a couple of rounds to go

A decent performer on the Flat for David Loughnane last year, Titanium Moon only joined the McCain yard earlier this year and she is very much

a mare on the upgrade

The win takes McCain on to 30 points, more than he amassed last season when winning the bonus without actually winning any of the races. He now leads Iain Jardine, Alastair Ralph and Oliver Sherwood, who share second place.

many wins as he would like with this season with just two on the board, both on Titanium Moon, he has nonetheless been his usual consistent self and registered points on every race day. That consistency has earned him his place at the top of the leaderboard just one point ahead of McLernon, who kept up his challenge with two winners at the Sunday meeting on Arthur’s Quay and Didtheyleaveuoutto, both in the colours of leading owner JP McManus

Just two points further back is Sean Quinlan, who also enjoyed a successful Sunday earlier this month when winning the Molson Coors

Handicap Chase on Getaway Luv as well as taking second on City Derby in the FGH Security Handicap Hurdle, both horses being trained by his wife Lizzie

It’s tight at the top in the race to win this season’s Cartmel Jockeys Challenge title with perennial winner Brian Hughes getting his nose in front, but with just four points covering the top four in a chasing group headed by Richie McLernon, Sean Quinlan and Sean Bowen.

Hughes is far and away the most successful jockey at Cartmel with 76 career wins on the track. And while he may not have racked up as

Bowen remains a menacing presence in fourth place just one point further back. He has amassed his total despite having ridden at only three of the five days so far, while Jonathan Bewley and Jonathan England are not out of it by any means back in fifth and sixth places respectively

CARTMEL TRAINERS CHALLENGE

Haslam denied a double when Cash Again was beaten a head by George Bewley’s Hungry Tiger in the St Mary’s Hospice Handicap Chase

But he improved on that two days later when he completed a 71-1 double with the JP McManusowned Richie McLernon-ridden Arthur’s Quay in the Oakmere Homes Handicap Chase and Didtheyleaveuoutto in the FGH Security Handicap Hurdle

An eight-points lead looks a healthy one at this stage of the competition with just four days left to go, but with a glance over his shoulder Haslam would see that the two of the three leading the chasing pack are Donald McCain and James Moffatt, the only men to have won the Challenge since it began 11 years ago

Middleham trainer Ben Haslam has set his sights on winning his first ever Cartmel Trainers Challenge and after collecting 11 points over the two days of the June meeting, he has powered clear of his rivals at the top of the table.

Calevade, who had a won a seller at the May meeting and did not attract a bid, stepped up on that performance to win the Cartmel Amateur Jockeys Handicap Hurdle on the Friday, with

Both McCain and Moffatt are on 13 points along with George Bewley and the momentum seems to be with Moffatt. The local trainer is bidding to retain his crown and after a disappointing May, he came roaring back with Jelski and Zumbi, first and third in the Cark Manor Handicap Chase on Friday plus six points on the Sunday including a one-two for Our Sam and Shantou Sunset in the Derian House

Race Description This is a two miles and one furlong handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 125. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

The pick of several appealing candidates in this competitive race is CALEVADE, who made it 2-2 over C&D with a clear-cut success in a 13-runner handicap last time and an 11lb rise may not be enough to stop him in his tracks Gaius may well have more to offer now making the switch to handicap company and he is feared most, albeit only just as Luttrell Lad is potentially very dangerous off this reduced mark. Race Description This is a two miles and six furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125.

BETS AVAILABLE ON THIS RACE

Race Description This is a two miles and one and a half furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

Leading course trainer (17-22): J Moffatt (31 wins from 188 runners, 16%) runs BELLS EXPRESS

PLAY SMARTER

Veteran TONTO’S SPIRIT signalled he’s ready to go close again when fourth over C&D last time so Cartmel’s winning-most horse is taken to thwart Glan Y Gors in his bid to follow up last year’s victory in this contest. Hungry Tiger and Ardera Cross both have winning form here too and can’t be ruled out of an open handicap.

BETTING ADVICE - HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager.

2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, by naming the horse and horse’s number Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct the bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.

3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings.

4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms, Place Betting, not all on-course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or place

5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the punter to his rights

6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes e.g. £1, £5 or £10, but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.

Race Description This two miles and five furlongs handicap steeple chase has been designed for four-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 115. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.
