I traveled to a town called Guardalavaca in Cuba when I was sixteen. I had the opportunity to experience life off the resort, with locals my family had met on a previous trip. They were such humble and loving individuals despite the language barrier and different living circumstances. This gave me a passion to travel and experience how different cultures and ethnicities live. As a result, I have completed the following schooling: the Hotel and Resorts Operations Management program at Georgian College in 2019, the Travel Agency Operations program virtually through Humber College in 2020, and obtained my TICO Travel Counsellor certification in April 2024.

A Journey Beyond Comfort: Building Hope in Jinotega,
Nicaragua
“Nestled in the scenic highlands of Jinotega, Nicaragua, I found myself far from the typical tourist path. My stay at the town’s best hotel, a humble 2-star establishment, set the stage for an unforgettable journey that would reshape my understanding of luxury and purpose.
In Jinotega, my mission was clear: to aid in building homes for 25 families living in dire conditions, right next to the city’s garbage dump. Here, the daily struggle involves scavenging through waste, yet the spirit of the community is undaunted. This made me realize that the most impactful and transformative travel experiences are often found in the simplest, most unexpected places and not necessarily those that involve wealth or expensive activities.”

Sculpting Memories in Puglia, Italy
“I traveled to Puglia on a FAM trip with Nomadic Puglia, an incredible DMC based in Italy, and Patty Van Wyck, the owner of MasterClass Italy! Nomadic Puglia offers bespoke, eco-conscious travel experiences. Throughout our adventure, the trio of partners guided us through immersive encounters with Puglia’s finest guides, musicians, sculptors, boat captains and winemakers showcasing a profound commitment to supporting the local economy.
One memorable morning, we were granted exclusive access to a protected WWF forest nestled within a reclaimed Lecce stone quarry, now flourishing with verdant foliage. Amidst the forest’s embrace, we encountered a talented sculptor who had set up a temporary studio beneath the canopy. Here, we observed the intricate art of shaping Lecce stone, a porous limestone used to build and decorate the historic architecture of Lecce’s Old Town. Equipped with artisanal tools, each of us had the opportunity to sculpt our own creations. To cap off this enriching journey, we were treated to delicious farm-to-table meals, masterfully crafted by the chef-owner of Nomadic Puglia. These experiences not only delighted our senses but also elevated our adventure to new heights, blending sustainability with deep cultural immersion.”

Darren Prashad
Affiliate Senior Travel Designer @advtraveldarren
Darren has dedicated his career to sustainable travel, working in both for-profit and nonprofit sectors for over 20 years. He is also the Senior Manager at Experiences Canada, a charity providing travel experiences for Canadian youth. Darren has traveled to over 30 countries and has supported WaterAid Canada in bringing clean water to underserved communities.
“I believe in collecting moments and not things and encourage all travelers to do the same. With my firsthand experience in adventure travel, expeditions, and luxury, I aim to curate the best experiences for my clients.”
Which destination is at the top of your list when it comes to sustainability? Why?
Peru stands out as a prime example. Over the years, numerous tour operators have made significant investments in the welfare of the porters who laboured on the Inca Trail. The country has dedicated considerable efforts to preserving this iconic trail for the enjoyment of future generations.
What is one thing you wish you knew when you started selling travel?
When I began my career in the travel industry, my training focused solely on selling packaged and resort holidays. Reflecting on my journey, I wish I had been introduced earlier to the concepts of sustainable travel and the myriads of off-the-beaten-path options available. Before entering the travel sector, I lived in Honduras and saw firsthand the positive impact of supporting local communities and grassroots initiatives. This experience highlighted the profound benefits that sustainable travel can bring to destinations and their people.
Is there a sustainable trip you’ve booked that stands out? Tell us about it!
The experiences that resonate with me most are those where first-time travelers step out of their comfort zones to embrace more sustainable travel options. Many clients are unaware that they have an adventurous spirit. One client stands out in my memory, a finance professional who had only ever taken resort vacations. I arranged a trip to Costa Rica for him, and he later told me it changed his life. Initially, he expressed some worries and reservations about the trip. However, upon his return, he recounted thrilling stories of his travels – visiting local restaurants and coffee plantations and engaging in activities like white-water rafting and ziplining. These experiences pushed him beyond his usual boundaries and left a lasting impact.
Do you have go-to partners when booking sustainable travel? Which ones stand out?
G Adventures has been my go-to partner for sustainable travel since I became a travel agent over 10 years ago. One standout experience for
me was visiting the Planeterra project called Oodles of Noodles in Vietnam in 2017. This cooking class was led by youth experiencing homelessness who were training to work in the hospitality industry. It was a profound experience, showcasing how travel can directly support community development. I believe that dining at local restaurants or participating in cooking classes are among the best ways to immerse oneself in a country’s culture.
What’s something every advisor should know before booking a sustainable trip?
Take the time to understand your clients’ needs, interests, and comfort levels. Sustainable travel can often push people out of their comfort zones, and as creatures of habit, we tend to prefer familiarity. For clients who have never experienced a sustainable tour before, it’s best to start with smaller, more approachable destinations, such as those in Latin America. These regions typically offer a gentle introduction to sustainable travel, with less culture shock, making it easier for travelers to adapt and enjoy their new experiences.
Tips for Sustainable Travel
and excitement of exploration.
CHOOSE YOUR DESTINATION WISELY
The first step in sustainable travel begins with selecting your destination. Select places that prioritize sustainability and have measures in place to protect their natural and cultural heritage. Research local practices: Look into how destinations manage waste, water, and energy. Support those that invest in sustainable infrastructure.
Off-thebeaten-path:
Consider lesser-known locations. This can reduce the strain on over-touristed areas and provide a more unique experience.
CHOOSE ECO-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATIONS
Where you stay can significantly impact your environmental footprint. Many hotels and lodges are now implementing sustainable practices, from energy-efficient operations to waste reduction programs.
Green certifications: Look for hotels with recognized green certifications like LEED, Green Globe, or EarthCheck.
TRAVEL LIGHT AND SMART
Packing light not only makes your journey easier but also reduces the carbon emissions associated with transporting heavier luggage.
Eco-friendly products:
Use biodegradable toiletries and reusable containers. Avoid single-use plastics.
Smart packing:
Choose versatile clothing that can be layered and re-worn.
OPT FOR SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT
How you get to your destination and how you move around once there are crucial factors in sustainable travel.
Eco-conscious design:
Opt for properties that incorporate sustainable materials and low-impact construction.
Fly less, stay longer: When possible, take fewer flights and spend more time at each destination.
Public and active transport: Use public transportation, rent bicycles, or explore on foot.
