DO YOUR RESEARCH Draw up a list of desirable areas before you start looking for a property, but don’t be too specific, as this will narrow your options considerably.
ASK THE AGENT:
HOW MANY ROOMS? Competition for properties can be intense and even though you may have a certain number of rooms in mind, be prepared to strike a balance. Properties with many rooms could be considerably more expensive.
SPEAK TO THE NEIGHBOURS When you have found your property, speak to the neighbours to get a first-hand account of what it’s like to live there. Can you be assured of a warm welcome should you sign on the dotted line?
CONSIDER TRANSPORT LINKS How easy is it to get in and out of the city and to travel further afield? You may want
to ensure that your home is close to bus or rail networks and find out whether these services are on the main route.
WILL YOUR CHILDREN BE SAFE AND HAPPY? If your children are young it may be worth choosing a property that has a fenced off garden space, especially if close to a main road. Do your homework and consider the catchment areas of local schools.
Q – You’re thinking of buying a property in the city but it doesn’t have parking. How will this affect its rent-ability? A - Many city centre professionals who live in the city, do so for it’s convenient transport links, and therefore don’t require parking facilities. In terms of the financial benefit, parking can add between £50-£75pcm and for areas like Digbeth and the Jewellery Quarter, a permit can be obtained for as little as £210 per annum, although spaces are first come, first served.
