yThis summer, we are pleased to offer fun and rewarding classes on BOTH of our state-of-the-art campus locations: Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) and California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley (CSArts-SGV)! Whether you are looking to try a new art form or build upon prior skills, our impressive catalog of courses offers something for every student.

CLASSES AT OCSA

June 24 – July 26

Located on the OCSA campus in Santa Ana, CA, these classes include Five-Week Arts Camps and One-Week, Two-Week, and Three-Week Arts Intensives.

The OCSA campus is now offering DISCOVERY classes for the youngest artists, ages 5-7!

All classes provide young artists with a chance to develop important fundamentals and/or hone their skills in a specific art form. There are classes for students of all levels, ages 5-15, with most classes culminating in a student showcase opportunity.

We invite you to join us this summer for an arts experience unlike any other!

In this engaging class, students will learn to identify the many actions necessary for a successful scene, including how to establish and enhance the root behavior of a character Be prepared to throw yourself into several days of fun and creativity!

In this one-week introduction to basketball, students develop the basic skills of ball handling, dribbling, shooting, strategy, and decision making in offensive and defensive settings, both from an individual and team aspect. Collaboration and camaraderie are encouraged throughout the week

Beginning Drawing (Ages 8-15)

In this one-week introduction to drawing, students create artwork based on real-life observation and imaginative design Using step-by-step methods and creative problem-solving, students explore different mediums and techniques for the purpose of building both their skill level and portfolio.

Ceramics (Ages 8-15)

This one-week class introduces students to various ceramic handbuilding techniques and decorating activities. Students explore making functional and decorative ceramics using coil, pinch, and slab handbuilding methods This engaging and fun class also helps students become more confident in the creative art making process through experimentation with clay and glaze application

Dance Fusion (Ages 8-15)

In this dynamic class, students are exposed to a wide variety of dance styles, including but not limited to jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, contemporary, and tap Throughout the week, students work on technique and choreography, with the intensive culminating in a performance for friends and family to enjoy

Digital Character & World Building (Ages 12-15)

In this one-week class, students design dynamic characters and compelling environments with the use of Adobe Photoshop and traditional drawing Conceptual ideas are worked through using pre-production techniques and developed into finished concept art This class engages students in ideation, design, story, silhouettes, character comps, environment comps, and character and environment painting.

Time: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (Lunch break included from 12 – 1 p.m.)

Dungeons & Dragons 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Adventure (Ages 12-15)

Are you brave enough to enter a world of dragons, monsters, druids, barbarians, and magicians? Are you ready to take your storytelling skills to a whole new realm? Join us as we enter the mysterious world of Dungeons & Dragons. In this class, students learn the history, rules, and gameplay of Dungeons & Dragons Participants are able to create their own character and learn tips for being a Dungeon Master, all culminating in a real campaign!

Time: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (Lunch break included from 12 – 1 p.m.)

Stage Combat (Ages 12-15)

A slap to the face, a fall down some stairs, an epic 15-person battle complete with swords and axes... These are all examples of stage combat! This fun introductory class will cover the acts of conflict, danger, and defense performed for entertainment on stage or film Using props and safe instructional methods, students will learn to execute various stage combat moves to tell a story as effectively as using dance choreography, set design, or costuming.

Time: 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Theatrical Makeup Design (Ages 12-15)

In this one-week introduction to Theatrical Makeup Design students gain understanding of the difference between makeup for theatre and for film/television. Students learn special effects techniques used in the horror and fantasy genres while also practicing makeup looks for a theatre production.

Time: 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

World Building: A Writer’s Guide (Ages 8-15)

So you’ve decided to write a story that takes place in an imaginary world and you’re wondering where to begin. Well, look no further! In this class, students spend the week building an imaginary world in which they can set a story Instruction focuses on the development of people, places, politics, flora and fauna, culture, magic systems, and more!

Time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. (Ages 8-11)

WEEK TWO AT CSARTS-SGV

Monday, June 17 – Friday, June 21 (no classes on June 19)

Animation (Ages 12-15)

Students learn to animate digitally while engaging in the concepts and principles of animation

Emphasis is placed on squash-and-stretch, anticipation, exaggeration, and timing. Technical focus includes pose-to-pose, keyframing, tweening, and animation cycles, as well as expression of emotion and gesture through movement with a variety of techniques and approaches

Students are able to create several short animated films throughout the class

Time: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (Lunch break included from 12 – 1 p.m.)

In this one-week introduction to flag football, students develop improved agility, speed, and sportsmanship in a supportive environment Participants learn about game play, formations, play calling, and defensive and offensive strategies.

Choose Your Own Adventure: Writing Stories with Choice

(Ages 8-15)

Each person is the decision maker in their own life, and in this workshop, students learn to write stories where the reader takes on the role of the protagonist and makes choices throughout the narrative. Learn how to draft, write, revise, and illustrate a Choose Your Own Adventure story that is packed with action, mystery, and, of course, free will!

Time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. (Ages 12-15)

Costume Crafting (Ages 8-15)

Costume crafters share their art by creating specialty costume items – including accessories and jewelry – using techniques such as fabric painting and dyeing, millinery (hat making), working with fur and leather, and mask making In this costume crafting class, students have the opportunity to work with many different materials to create jewelry, masks, small pieces of foam or plastic armor, and at least one headpiece or hat. The skills learned in this class are also transferable to other disciplines in theatre, including prop making and painting

Creature Design (Ages 12-15)

In this course, students learn the magic of creating creatures for video games and animation. Using design, anatomy, storytelling, and world building, students learn to create believable and captivating creatures for the digital world

This fun-filled, introductory musical theatre class engages students in the creative process, while giving them foundational skills in singing, acting, and dancing. Students learn to find their voice and hone their skills in character development, storytelling, ensemble building, and creative expression while maintaining body alignment and freedom of expression

In Recording Techniques, students learn about analog and digital recording techniques used throughout history Using a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), students learn step-by-step methods and creative problem-solving techniques to record live audio and create an authentic, unique sound

SUMMER BBQ AT CSARTS ACADEMY!

Lunch is served at CSArts Academy this summer, and students will want to line up for our delicious meal options!

Everything is made fresh daily!

Lunch will consist of a grilled main course with options such as BBQ chicken, a burger, or sausage. Also included will be a side salad, some fruit, and one of OCSA's famous cookies!

NEW THIS SUMMER: DISCOVER ART! - For our youngest artists

ArtSPARKS! - For all needs and abilities

DISCOVER ART! (Ages 5-7)

This new, play-centered class is for our youngest student artists, ages 5-7, and aims to introduce them to various different art disciplines through play. Students have the opportunity to explore many art genres such as visual art, acting, singing, and dance! Sessions are for one week. You can sign up for one session or all four to create a summer of artistry and fun!

Please Note: Each class has a maximum capacity of 12 students.

Founded by OCSA student Justin Freeman and sponsored as a project through the Dragon Kim Foundation, ArtSPARKS! is a brand-new program designed specifically for students of all needs and abilities, including those who are neurodivergent or have physical disabilities This weeklong, inclusive, play-centered course introduces students to a variety of arts disciplines, allowing them to act, sing, dance, and create in a safe, supportive, and fun environment!

Acting (Ages 8-15)

Acting is believing and opens up the imagination! This fun, five-week course introduces students to the art of acting and acquaints them with the fundamentals of rehearsal and performance. Students participate in a variety of acting exercises, improvisation, storytelling, and scene and monologue work, culminating in a “step into the classroom” performance to share with family and friends The goal of the class is for students to experience the creative process and gain confidence while having fun! Enrollment in classes are determined by age groupings (8-10 & 11-15)

Animation (Ages 11-15)

Students learn to animate digitally while exploring the fundamentals of the art form, including how to create the illusion of life and movement through a variety of techniques and approaches

Throughout the course, participants create several short animated films It is recommended to take this course in conjunction with the Digital Character Design course.

Ceramics (Ages 8-15)

This fun and engaging class challenges students to experience their own creative process through the art of ceramics. Students are introduced to ceramic studio terminology, explore the geological origins of clay and glazes, and learn the science behind how clay becomes ceramic. While creating functional ware and decorative pieces, students learn elements of art, design principles, historical and geographical context of ceramic art, and hand-building techniques

Time: 9 a m – 12 p m (Ages 11-15)

1 – 4 p.m. (Ages 8-10)

Creative Writing (Ages 8-15)

Over the course of five weeks, students are introduced to a broad spectrum of creative writing genres, from poetry to fiction to dramatic writing Students work on creative writing fundamentals while developing their own creative voice By the end of the session, students will have produced their own original work to be published in an anthology.

Times: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. or 1 – 4 p.m.

Digital Art & Design (Ages 11-15)

Intended to be a one-stop introduction to making artwork digitally, students learn how to use Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator to create a myriad of exciting projects Students practice the basics of effectively designing their own personal logos, business cards, typefaces, movie posters, playing cards, 3D cereal boxes, and more! With tons of room for creative expression, this class is a great introduction to the world of digital art and design. This class culminates in a showcase featuring the students’ work.

Digital Character Design for Animation

(Ages 11-15)

Students learn how to design everything needed to tell a compelling story, including characters, clothing, tools, animals, and environments. Working primarily in Adobe Photoshop, emphasis is placed on process and technique as students design and create characters from scratch. It is recommended to take this course in conjunction with the Animation course

This unique course explores a variety of art disciplines and gives students a taste of what OCSA’s Integrated Arts Conservatory has to offer. Musical Theatre Revue (Ages 8-15)

This fun-filled exploratory musical theatre class engages students in the creative process, while giving them foundational skills in singing, acting, and dancing Students learn to find their voice and hone their skills in character development, storytelling, ensemble building, and creative expression At the end of the course, students have the opportunity to show off their hard work in a fun musical revue performance for friends and family to enjoy.

CLASSICAL VOICE

Sing OC! (Ages 11-15)

Sing OC! is a vocal intensive program created for young singers. Each class begins and ends with learning choir songs from different parts of the world. Fiction Writing (Ages 11-15)

Students have the chance to craft and workshop their short stories and novels in a rigorous, pre-professional setting. The goal of this one-week workshop is to help students produce a portfolio of polished material suitable for submission to magazines and academic creative writing programs

Introduction to a Commercial Kitchen (Ages 11-15)

This intensive class focuses on the necessary skills and techniques used to produce high-quality cuisine in a restaurant setting Students learn how to replicate recipes using their own equipment at home and how to properly cook vegetables, proteins, breads, and desserts using several methods including: sautéeing, poaching, roasting, baking, and pastry techniques

Students work on designing a well-composed plate using each day’s specific focus This intensive is designed to not only teach students how to cook, but also to inspire them to try new things and to create their own style of cooking by experimenting at home.

This cross-disciplinary, two-week course takes students on a filmmaker's journey through beginning screenwriting, production, and film acting Students receive hands-on experience, and guidance under industry professionals that take them through this creative process. Students write, produce, and act in short film projects. This class is a good follow-up to both the Film Production Skills and Cinematography & Special Effects classes.

Popular Music (Ages 11-15)

Calling all songwriters! Looking for a space to improve your songwriting skills? Join us for our three-week songwriting camp hosted by OCSA's Popular Music Conservatory! This camp offers two tracks (middle school and high school), where students are mentored by one of the conservatory's songwriting instructors and current student songwriters from the program Participants study different types of song form, rhyme scheme, and the use of literary aids to further the songwriting process Students are also given the opportunity to compose alone and collaborate with others in the class.

Beginning Special Effects Makeup (Ages 11-15)

This beginning level class is recommended for students who want to learn to apply foundational makeup techniques to achieve exciting and innovative special effect designs in various popular genres. Students get first-hand experience with the following types of makeup: basic stage, zombies, character, animals, fantasy, old age, and scary clown Participants are encouraged to design and execute original effects based on their interests and skill levels Families and friends are invited to a culminating event project to celebrate the student’s work and learning

In this immersive class, students learn the basic functions of a digital camera and how to take clear and captivating photographs Students are invited to work with a DSLR camera, point-and-shoot camera, or cellphone camera. Emphasis is placed on lighting, composition, and execution of creative conceptual ideas, as well as editing using a web-based photo processing software This course is foundational for any student with an interest in photography or digital media

This design course explores the introductory industry pipeline to creating game-ready 3D assets. Participants discover the creative process of designing props and characters, explore stylization, and create believable hand-painted materials Conceptual pieces are modeled into 3D digital assets and built to industry standards Students also learn to apply textural knowledge to bring their characters and props to life with UV unwrapped textures

Who May Register

CSArts Academy classes are open to students in the community The age group varies depending on the class. Please check the description and details carefully when selecting your classes.

Fees

Class fees include most materials and supplies. Some classes may require students to provide additional materials, such as their own musical instruments, dance shoes, food ingredients/spices/cookware, or costumes.

Discounts

A 10% discount is offered to returning CSArts Academy students and currently enrolled Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA)/California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley (CSArts-SGV) students. If you are a returning CSArts Academy student or a currently enrolled OCSA or CSArts-SGV student, please contact academy@csarts.net to receive a discount code for a 10% discount.

Scholarships

We offer scholarships on a financial-need basis. Additionally, the Camp OCSA Scholarship Program is open to students in grades 4-6 who live or attend school in Santa Ana. Canceled Classes

A class may be canceled if the class enrollment minimum is not reached up to three (3) business days before the start of the class. You may transfer to another class (pending class availability) and transfer the registration fees from the canceled class if you do so within two (2) days of the cancellation, or you may request a full refund.

Refunds

Refunds can be requested by participants up to six (6) weeks before the start date of their chosen summer session class(es). All cancellations are subject to a $50 PER CLASS DROP FEE. Due to the limited number of spaces available in our classes, NO REFUNDS will be issued after these deadlines. REFUND POLICIES ARE STRICTLY ENFORCED.
