Welcome to

Liberty Kids!

Congratulations on joining the Liberty Kids community. !As educators you face the challenge of meeting higher levels of performance in your students and teachers. !Character Education is more critical than ever as we keep our children grounded with an eagerness to learn despite the pressure of performance testing. As we remember America and ! apply her character in our schools through Liberty Kids, you will discover character education is the fundamental key to successful to learning. !

Assign a member of your staff, faculty or Parent Teacher Organization to head the Liberty Kids Project in your school.

Choose a beginning and ending day to introduce and complete the program. Choose a special award or honor to give to the students who become Liberty Kids.

Introduce Liberty Kids to your students through a patriotic assembly. Allow the American Spirit to inspire Liberty Kidʼs action. When students experience a reverence for our flag and the men and women who protect our country they feel a deep desire to become a Liberty Kid.

After the kick-off assembly have copies made for each student to take home and begin the program. We recommend color copies, students recognize and respect its value. Some teachers send the color copy home after the assembly and during parent teacher conference hand out another simple black and white copy to parent and child with the challenge to finish by a set classroom date.

Use occasional class time to share service experiences, recite quotes and understand their meaning, learn about the character that shaped our nation, or practice patriotic songs during music education. Remember:

Pledge your allegiance to the flag daily. Have your color guard raise and lower the flag daily. Make monthly/bi-monthly Liberty Kid assemblies an important part of your school tradition. These assemblies play a key part in the success of your Liberty Kids program making it simple to recognize students who have accomplished their Liberty Kids requirements by awarding their patch, certificate or other honor of your choosing. Students are inspired to complete program requirements as honored Liberty Kids demonstrate self-esteem and leadership through sharing the benefits of service and respect for America.

Liberty Kids understand their daily attitude and actions determine their happiness and the happiness of those around them. Liberty Kids will inspire your students and teachers to increase their potential and apply it in their daily living. ! Liberty Color Guard The Liberty Guard is a prestigious honor. You, as a teacher/leader, have a unique opportunity to teach proper flag etiquette. The guard consists of up to five student members and one adult supervisor. The guard lineʼs up single file, taking care to be as precise as possible. They can follow or be followed by the teacher, or the teacher can stand by the flagpole.

Rules on how to display the flag: 1. When grouped, it is in the center

and at the highest point of group or in front of other flags. 2. To position the flag at half-staff, first hoist the flag to the peak of the staff for an instant and then, in respect for the deceased, lower it to the half-staff position -- roughly halfway between the top and bottom of the staff. Before lowering it for the day, raise the flag again to the peak of the pole. 3.When displaying the flag against a wall, vertically or horizontally, the stars are on the left. 4. On a stage, it is placed on the speaker's right side. (this is the left side to the audience) When carried with one other flag, it is on the right. 5. The flag should be raised briskly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. Ordinarily it should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset. It should be illuminated if displayed at night. The flag is saluted while hoisting or lowering the flag 6. When hung with the national banner of other countries, each flag must be displayed from a separate pole of the same height. Each flag should be approximately the same size. They should be raised and lowered simultaneously. 7. When displayed with another flag and the staffs are crossed, the Flag of the United States is placed on its own right with its staff in front of the other flag. 8. Handle the flag with reverence. It represents our great country. To properly fold the U.S. Flag, follow these steps: a. Two people face each other, each holding one end of the flag. Stretch it horizontally at waist height and fold in half lengthwise. b. Fold the flag in half lengthwise again, the union (stars) should be on the top. c. One person holds the flag by the union while the other starts at the opposite end by making a triangular fold. d. Continue to fold in the flag in triangles from the stripes end until only the blue field with stars is showing.

Guard Member #1- Holds folded flag. The proper way to carry a folded Flag is; hold the left hand horizontally with fingers together, close to the body at waist level, place the folded Flag on the hand with the straight side nearest the bearer's body, the right hand (weapon hand) is then placed on top of the Flag, gently holding it in place; the hands should be at approximate 90° one to the other. Guard Member #2-4 follows silently in march line Guard Member #5 (last in line) Calls “MARCH” out loud with a strong voice.

CEREMONY: Teacher- “Color Guard Attention” (stands at attention in line). “Will the audience (if there is one) please stand as we raise (or lower) the colors of the United States of America” • Guard member #5- (last in line) “Color Guard MARCH: LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT” & so forth until the flag pole is reached. • Guard line marches to flag pole, when it is reached they remain marching in place in line. • Guard member #5- “Color Guard HALT” • Guard Line turns to face outward (toward the audience). Guard #1 works silently with remaining members to unfold (or fold) flag. Guard members 2-4 keep palms up protecting flag from touching ground. • Guard #1,2,- attach and Guard #3 raise or lowers the colors, returning to guard line. • Guard #5 - (last in line) “Will the audience please repeat the Pledge of Allegiance, (guard members turn to face flag at attention) ! ! I pledge.....” • Teacher- “Color guard dismiss”

Liberty Kids Incentives The most important reason for providing your students with a Liberty Kids award is to keep the program visible in your school and community. We recommend having a Liberty Kids assembly 1-2 times a month. Sing the Liberty Kids song or other patriotic songs, have the Liberty Kids color guard raise or lower the flag, recite the pledge and honor the students who have completed the program. You may invite a visiting community member to tell about service they give and how it makes them feel to serve. At our Liberty Kids pilot school we have students and community members nominate individuals who have lived exceptional lives of service and honor them with a Liberty Leader patch. This event encourages gratitude and vision while it reminds them to continue working on becoming great Americans. Your students will become respectful, productive, responsible citizens and family members as they apply the Liberty Kids values in their lives and school. Accomplishing the requirements takes work and dedication. Liberty Kids schools are choosing to reward this honor in many different ways. We believe each school is unique and understands the needs of their students and the best way to reward them for their dedicated service. Patch

This image is individualized to each grade level and is seen on each Liberty Kids page. These are similar to a scout patch, but includes a nylon loop to hang on backpacks, making it easily transferrable from year to year. It is fun to see students who have accomplished the program from year to year wear a backpack littered with patches.

PRINCIPAL

The grade level images are simply and inexpensively reproduced into retro button pins. Students attach to their backpacks or jackets, collecting them through the years as they progress through the program.

Many Schools give a certificate T-shirts printed of completion. There is a basic with the grade one above, and also one for level emblem and each grade level with the patch awarded upon image displayed in the lower completion. left hand corner. The first year we began the program at a K-2 school the patches were given throughout the year as the requirements were completed and a certificate was awarded at the end of the year.

Our Founding Fathers

The Founding Fathers, the framers of the Constitution, wanted to form a government that did not allow one person to have too much authority or control. While under the rule of the British king they learned that this could be a bad system. Yet government under the Articles of Confederation taught them that there was a need for a strong centralized government. With this in mind the framers wrote the Constitution to provide for a separation of powers, or three separate branches of government. Each has its own responsibilities and at the same time they work together to make the country run smoothly and to assure that the rights of citizens are not ignored or disallowed. Did you know?

The first public school in America was established by Puritan settlers in 1635 in the home of Schoolmaster Philemon Pormont and was later moved to School Street. Boys from various socioeconomic backgrounds attended Boston Latin School until 1972 when girls were also accepted. A portrait statue of Benjamin Franklin overlooks the former site of Boston Latin School which Franklin, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock once attended. Franklin's place of birth was just one block away on Milk Street, across from the Old South Meeting House.
