...Networking

W

hy is networking so important these days? If you are a frequent networker, you will probably expect to capitalize on your interactions and build extensive, fruitful and highly profitable relationships how do you make networking work for you? If you are in business, whether a business professional, employee or entrepreneur, it is important to maximize your net worth through increasing your networking efforts.

“It is not just what we know in life that matters, it is very much about whom we know and the quality of these relationships. The more people we have access to, the better our business opportunities”, says author, coach and entrepreneur Dr.

Renate Volpe, founder and CEO of Dr. R Volpe Leadership Consulting and author of “Master the Art of Networking”. Networking is, essentially, a process of building mutually beneficial relationships. Neszette Wilson, an Independent Certified coach, teacher and speaker of the John Maxwell Team in South Africa, describes networking as an arrangement of people crossed at regular intervals by other people, all of whom are cultivating mutually beneficial relationships. Most networkers know that in order to build relationships, they have to get out there and expose themselves to people, tell them what business they do and see how they would

both benefit from a business relationship. It is important to not just get out there at random events, but have a networking plan in place and network at regular intervals in various circles that meet our expectations. Effective networking is not a random event with overnight results. How much time do you actually spend networking? In a leadership study conducted by Fortune 500 companies in the United States and mentioned by D. Volpe in her networking book, efficient leaders spent 11% of their time networking, whereas successful leaders spent as much as 48% of their time networking. Spending great amounts of time networking is only productive if done correctly. WealthWise magazine 9
