Oxford Area Chamber of Commerce

In Memory of Janis Walker and Jerome Rodio for their dedication and tireless efforts on behalf of the OACC and the Oxford community.

Janis Walker OACC Executive Director August 9, 2016

Jerome Rodio 2016 OACC President July 14, 2016

By Angie Thompson-Lobb, President of OACC

T

his summer was a sad one for the Oxford Area Chamber of Commerce. We lost two key people who have worked tirelessly throughout the year. President Jerome Rodio and Executive Director Janice Walker will be fondly remembered for their dedication, professionalism and support of our Chamber and our community. We thank you Jerome and Janice for setting the bar so high for all members of the Chamber. I think I can speak for everyone when I say, we will continue the high standards of volunteerism and dedication that the two of you exemplified. We can do that best by honoring these two individuals through each event we sponsor. Our Annual Dinner Dance was held in March to honor individuals and businesses who have given greatly to our community. Mark this event on your calendar for next year, March 4, 2017. In May our Annual Golf Tournament was held and was a huge success due to the generosity of our members and their friends. This event raised money for scholarship to be awarded to four deserving Oxford Area High School students. This year’s recipients are Connor Hilaman, Kathleen Kemp, Stevie Lynn Kell and Rachel Rogevich. The awards are given for four years. Don’t miss next year’s golf event, in September of 2017! One of our most popular events is the Halloween Parade. This year’s parade will be filled with ghosts, goblins, and a host of other frightening participants. We thank Jim McLeod and his hard-working committee. This huge event would not be possible without them. The Oxford Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors makes these events and many more possible each year. We are always on the look-out for more volunteers to help us carry this load. Please contact Heidi Kern, our new Executive Director, at 610-932-0740, if you can spare just a couple of hours a month. The ever popular Oxfordian Magazine is in its 19th year. OACC members receive discounts when they place an ad in the Oxfordian. This valuable tool has a complete list of businesses in our area. The magazine is mailed throughout the Oxford area and in areas surrounding this community. It is the only magazine dedicated to the Oxford area. Lastly, I would like to thank all the sponsors, organizers and volunteers who help to make Oxford and its surrounding areas a great place to live and do business. Country Christmas is December 2nd, 5-8 P.M. Join your neighbors as we carol, light the tree, enjoy the horse and carriage, ride the train and so much more. We are planning our events for 2017 and should have them listed on the website shortly. The First Friday Car Show People’s Choice Winner was Jim Jones with his 1967 Ford Fairlane 500XL. Congratulations Jim! Approximately 4500 people attended the annual event and viewed over 240 vehicles. Special thanks to our Car Show Committee: David Ogino, Scott Brown, Lisa Burns and Heidi Kern. Planning has already begun for next year’s show. Last year, Oxford Mainstreet’s Design Committee instituted a public art program. You may have noticed small murals, wood carving and secret messages that only come out in the rain. Recently we took on our most ambitious project to date; a full-wall mural located at 14 S Third Street (Bog Turtle wall, behind Edward Jones Lawn.) Susan Melrath, the committee Chair, is also the artist. Prints of the mural are available with 40% of the proceeds donated to the public art fund. You can also donate to the public art fund at downtownoxfordpa. org/product/omi-design-committee-public-art-fund. lickerwood Wine Cellars and Twisted Treats is far more that a place to buy wine. It’s a place for people to come together and have a good time while sipping Flickerwood’s unique wines, other PA spirits and beers, or great brewed coffee (locally roasted in West Chester) and teas. Then there’s the treats: homemade pastries, jams and jellies, DiBruno cheese and meat boards, chocolates, and tortilla chips and salsa, all made locally. “It was time for Oxford to have a place like ours,” says Tammy Liberato, co-owner of Flickerwood Wine Cellars and Twisted Treats on S. Third Street. Flickerwood Wine Cellars started in Kennett Square eight years ago and expanded with a second location in Oxford three years ago. Now, with the Kennett location closed, the only place in Eastern Pennsylvania where you can have the Flickerwood experience is in Oxford. Her sister and co-owner Julie Wehner adds, “We invested in the town where we both live and our children go to school. With the help of a great landlord we were able to make it work.” The Flickerwood experience begins with a large welcoming space; it is a space that feels like home. You can choose to sit around a table or relax on a couch. Flickerwood opens at 8 am for the morning crowd to

get their day started with coffee, tea and pastries. As the day wears on, it’s a place to meet friends, sit a spell, and unwind with your favorite type of beverage. “We made our Oxford location different from our other store,” says Julie. “It is what the community needs and wanted.” “Some nights, like First Fridays, are family nights with board games,” adds Tammy. “Other nights are comedy nights or there’s music.” They have special Under 21 nights, too. The next comedy night is November 11 with Mike Burton (warm up act for Rachel Ray’s TV show) and John Ager. Tammy and Julie’s father made wine all his life. When he retired 16 years ago, he decided to sell his wines to the community and called his winery Flickerwood. It was the 57th winery in the state of Pennsylvania to open. Today there are over 200 wineries in Pennsylvania. The sisters describe Flickerwood’s wine as hardy and sweet; different than other wines in the region. There is a wide variety from sweet reds to pear, strawberry rhubarb, blueberry and raspberry wines. Flickerwood just released a Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Franc, a French hybrid. Their brother, Rick Zampogna is the wine maker. The grapes are hot pressed to keep the validity of the wine. Flickerwood wine is made in McKean County, western Pennsylvania. It is a cooperative winery that gets their grapes from Lake Erie, Pennsylvania area, the Finger Lakes region of New York, and California. At their winery in Kane is a full service restaurant and lounge with a full liquor license. With the support of the community and a loyal following, Flickerwood Wine Cellars and Twisted Treats is becoming a staple of the Oxford community. Flickerwood Wine Cellars and Twisted Treats is located at 33 S. Third Street, in Oxford, PA. They can be reached at 610-932-9498. More information is on their website: www.flickerwood.com. ife is SWEET! And there are many different types of sweets available at The Candy Case. As the owner and operator, I’ve served as the Executive Director of Oxford Mainstreet, Inc. for 6 years, have worked for the Oxford Area Chamber of Commerce, serve on their Board of Directors and have always loved being among the business community and the hustle and bustle of Downtown Oxford, which is growing and thriving. So in May of this year, The Candy Case was launched in the center of the business district on the corner of S. Third Street and Market Street. It has been a dream of mine to be among those that invest in Oxford and create a welcoming space where children and adults can create a fond memory together-a trip to the neighborhood candy store to enjoy a treat, just like we all did when we were young. Many people who visit The Candy Case are surprised to know that we have a small commercial kitchen inside the store and that we make our sweet treats onsite, daily so that are fresh and delicious. The Candy Case offers a diverse array of products ranging from an eclectic selection of candies to fresh chocolate dipped treats to include varieties of nuts, cookies, rice treats, pretzels, marshmallows and caramels just to name a few. Seasonal fruits are also available covered in chocolate such as strawberries, apples, cherries and blueberries. You can walk in and make a personalized selection from the case for yourself or request a beautifully packaged gift of chocolate to go. Party platters/trays of all sizes and types are a specialty of ours. We accept orders for party/event favors and provide the service of candy buffets/bars for all occasions off site.

We also feature gifts/gift baskets. You tell us what your occasion is, what types of items you’d like in it, your price point and we will build a beautifully packaged gift that you can be proud to give. We also have gifts already made for some grab and go options. The candy making experience is now available for events and activities. We offer birthday parties whereas the children can have fun making and decorating their own chocolate treats along with a fun candy piñata and personalized birthday cake to celebrate. You’ll notice that The Candy Case hosts other types of events throughout the year such as business networking events, pottery painting for all ages, scout activities and even ladies’ night out events. We will continue to expand on our event options, so give us a call if you have an idea or suggestion to bring people together at The Candy Case. Follow us on facebook to learn about upcoming events that are open to the public. COMING SOON in mid-November, The Candy Case will be partnering with a talented and experienced baker, Vickiann Keene of Cakes by Vickiann. I am proud to partner with another successful small business owner of Oxford. Soon, you’ll be able to buy cupcakes, cake pops, fun sugar cookies, brownies, fudge and this list will continue to grow. Vickiann will also begin to take bakery orders for all occasions. Join us on Small Business Saturday on November 26th for a fun day of chocolate tasting and gift shopping while supporting your small, brick and mortar businesses in Downtown Oxford. Thank you for supporting all of our small businesses in Oxford’s business district. We can continue to be there for you to fill your needs for products and services, your requests for donations and also part time jobs when you, the community support us by patronizing our establishments. Thank you!

hat started as Dennis Martin’s appliance repair business has grown into three regional companies: Martin Appliance, Martin Water Conditioning, and Martin Furniture. Each company has their own expert sales and service staff specializing in their own products, but all follow the Martin Companies’ commitment to customer satisfaction and superior service. For the residents of the greater Oxford area, all three companies have a retail presence in their 10,000 sq. ft. location, on Route 222, north of Quarryville, in New Providence, Lancaster County. “Our customers tell us all the time it is worth their time to drive to Martin’s when they need new appliances or furniture,” says Shawn Reimold, General Manager of the Quarryville location. “ Once they have the Martin experience, nothing else compares. They love our service. Our service technicians are company and factory trained. We offer prices that are affordable and easily compete with the big box stores.” Dennis Martin started repairing and then selling appliances from his Lebanon County garage in 1973. Within a few years the customer base had grown and he opened his first storefront in Myerstown. Today there are six Martin Appliance locations in Lancaster, Lebanon and Berks counties and Altoona, Pa. Martin Appliance carries the core line brands such as Maytag, Whirlpool, Amana, Frigidaire, Amana, GE and Many more. Luxury brands include Viking, Jenn Air, Monogram, Thermador, Dacor, Blue Star, American Range, Miele, and more. Martin Water Conditioning was formed after Dennis noticed how the water being used with the appli-

ances he was repairing affected their performance. Low pH in the water can cause corrosion on metal fittings. Manganese and iron in the water can stain sinks and toilets. Hardness in the water affects a dishwasher’s ability to clean the dishes effectively and keeps the soap from working properly. To solve these issues for his customers, he began selling water treatment solutions. Today, Martin Water Conditioning has 6 retail and 8 additional service locations covering much of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Southern New York. Martins’ sells and installs various types of water treatment systems and service all brands. Their client base is residential, commercial and light industrial. Martin Furniture began as a high-end furniture finishing business in Ephrata, Pa. and opened its first showroom in 1996, expanding to a new Ephrata storefront in 2003. In 2006 they opened a second furniture and mattress location at the Quarryville location. “We enjoy dealing with American made products,” says Reimold. Some furniture brands include: Ashley, Temple, England and Klaussner. They carry a line of ultra-comfort recliners that are made in Old Forge, Pa. Mattress brands include Serta (made in Lancaster), Simmons, and Beautyrest. Oxford’s Lighthouse Youth Center and Oxford’s schools are among the many local non-profit organizations the Quarryville Martin Companies supports. It also supports the Solanco Food Bank, Lancaster County SPCA, Solanco Little League and Solanco Mules Football. Reimold encourages all to take the trip to Quarryville for you appliance, water treatment, and furniture, and mattress needs. Waiting there for you is a friendly welltrained staff waiting to assist you, as well as free coffee and bottled water. You can visit Martin’s at 2318 Beaver Valley Pike, New Providence, PA 17560 or a location near you at Brownstown, Ephrata, Cleona, Myerstown, and Reading. I

n June, we marked one year since we opened the new addition on the Oxford Library and officially opened the new Children’s Room. One of the things our staff enjoyed the most about the new Children’s Room was witnessing how the children reacted on seeing their new library. Their faces were full of joy and excitement when they were able to find old friends like Curious George, Pete the Cat and Harry Potter in a a bigger, brighter and more open library that welcomes them to explore, play and learn. If you visited the library this summer, you may have had the pleasure of seeing this take place. Our state of the art facility now matches the level of service and educational materials the Oxford Library makes available to the community. The Oxford Library Company began in 1784, making it the third oldest library in Pennsylvania and continues a long tradition of valuing information and making it available to those who seek it. The library has moved to various locations throughout Oxford while continuing to educate and enrich the lives of its citizens we serve. As you know, information sources are ever changing but libraries continue to evolve to provide what is needed. Speaking of tradition, the Oxford Area Historic Association recently loaned the Oxford Library a very remarkable piece of furniture. It is a set of shelves with a mirror back and a marble counter. What makes it special is that it was once housed in market owned by the Alexander family and was used to display sausages and cut meat. Clyde Alexander, who died in 1966, left approximately a quarter of a million dollars for the erection of a new library in memory of his wife, Katherine B. Bicking Alexander. Our new Children’s Room now resides in that building. It is fitting that this piece is now in the Oxford Library’s lobby and is used to share community information. Continue to stop in the library or check our website to see what your library has planned. On behalf of the library staff and our Board of Trustees, thank you for valuing, supporting and visiting the Oxford Library.

Elves Workshop-Make and Take Gifts November 26th, 11:00 am to 2 pm - This Small Business Saturday, while you are out shopping in Oxford, children are invited to stop by the Oxford Library to make and take a gift item for a loved one for the upcoming holidays. Christmas at FAO Schwartz Cast Meet and Greet with Oxford Center for Dance November 12th at 10:00 am - Please join us for a special event featuring the cast from the Oxford Center for Dance’s Christmas at FAO Schwartz. There will be a special Story Time, a toy themed craft, tasty treats, prizes and giveaways and an opportunity to take photos with the cast. Book Signing with Local Author Annette Whipple November 12th at 1:00 pm - Insects play a big role in the products people use and even eat. Join local author, Annette Whipple, as she teaches about surprisingly useful insects and their hard, colorful, sweet, and soft products in this interactive children’s program. A book signing of Annette’s book, Insects as Producers, will follow the program. The Oxford Library is located at 48 S. Second Street in Oxford. Oxford Educational Foundation Enhancing the Q ualit y of Edu c at i o n i n t h e Oxfo rd Area S c h o o l D i st r i c t

A

s part of our mission for the past twenty-two years, the Oxford Educational Foundation has provided mentors to students in the Oxford Area School District. Each year their goal is to expand quality mentoring opportunities to connect more of our young people with caring adults. “There is a powerful mentoring effect demonstrated by research and the experiences of young people who are connected to a mentor in real life” said Dr. Raymond A. Fischer, OEF Executive Director. “Mentoring is linked to improved academic, social and economic prospects for young people, and that ultimately strengthens our community.” Research has shown that when matched through a quality mentoring program, mentors can play a powerful role in providing young people with the tools to make responsible decisions, stay focused and engaged in school, and reduce or avoid risky behavior like skipping school, drug use and other negative activities. For example, in a recent national report called The Mentoring Effect, young people who were at-risk for not completing high school but who had a mentor were 55 percent more likely to be enrolled in college than those who did not have a mentor. They were also:

• 81% more likely to report participating regularly in sports or extracurricular activities. • 78% more likely to volunteer regularly in their communitiesa. • More than twice as likely to say they held a leadership position in a club or sports team. This same report found that one in three young people in our country will grow up without a mentor. Today, in our community there are students who could benefit from having a mentor. As we focus on engaging more community members in volunteering as mentors, we will share a simple message: Mentor IN REAL LIFE. Mentoring relationships are basic human connections that let a young person know that they matter and mentors frequently report back that their relationships make them feel like someone is there to help them make the right choices in life. If you know of anyone who could give an hour or two a week to serve as a mentor (maybe you?), please contact Dr. Raymond A. Fischer, Executive Director at rfischer@oxfordeducationalfoundation.org.

Wait, What? Oxford has an Arts Alliance? Yes! We are unique to small towns in that we do! We are located right on South Third Street in the heart of Downtown Oxford. What exactly do you do? We are a non profit organization that provides leadership and advocacy to the Arts. We host ten monthly art exhibits each year spotlighting a variety of mediums and themes. Local, regional and national artists have exhibited in the gallery. Downtown businesses have embraced this art night in Oxford and have created 3rd on Third. Join us on the 3rd Friday along Third Street (and Market and Locust too!). In addition, we provide art and music lessons to students of all ages (more about that later). On First Fridays, we host a community art project for children free of charge and on Saturdays, we open our classroom for Paint Your Own Pottery. Nine months of the year, we host a movie series in the gallery. We partner with local organizations to provide support and activities.

Tell me about your Music Lessons.

All of our instructors have obtained their State of Pennsylvania Criminal Background check, Child Abuse Clearance and FBI fingerprint clearances. And you offer Art Classes?

Yes, we offer art classes for both youth and adults. For our younger artists we hold “art clubs”. These weekly art classes are fun and provide a creative outlet. For our teen students interested in pursuing the arts, we hold Portfolio Preparation Classes. Adult art classes in jewelry making, watercolor, etc are available as well. Private instruction and Art Therapy are also offered. Do you offer Homeschooled Instruction for Art and Music? Yes we do! For more information visit our website OxfordArt.org. I’m an artist, how can have my art shown in the Gallery?

Our Fine Arts Committee plans out the Gallery Exhibits about a year in advance. A list of 2017 exhibits is available on our website. Some exhibits will have an open “call for art” and other are selected by the juror. We have a few exhibits that will be held each year: Student Art Show, Members’ Show, Artisan Gift Shop and National Juried Show. The best way to be kept abreast is to join our email list. What is Paint Your Own Pottery? Well it’s not exactly painting, but glazing. We have bisqueware items (mugs, plates, bowls, figurines, seasonal décor, etc). Every Saturday we are open 11 – 4 for guests to come and “paint” a piece. The cost depends on the item selected. Most are $10-$20. After a week or two, return to the Gallery to pick up your fired piece. These make great personalized gifts (especially around the holidays!). No reservations are needed and all ages are welcome. Do you offer parties? Yes, we offer parties and scout badges. These parties are perfect for Mom’s Night Out, Birthdays, Team Building, etc. We offer painting parties as well as Paint Your Own Pottery parties. More information is on our website, so be sure to check it out! (OxfordArt.org) What else do you do? We are heavily involved in the community. We offer art and

music lessons to students at the Lighthouse, we partner with Neighborhood Services on Empty Bowls (providing support to the food cupboard), we are involved in creating additional funding and awareness for the Inclusive Playground in Oxford, we offer scholarships to students pursuing art and music in post secondary schools in the Oxford and Octorara School Districts, we partner with profit and non profit organizations to elevate the cultural presence in Oxford. On First Fridays we run a free art project for children. We support public art, enhance art and music that is taught in the local schools, hold special events and provide an opportunity to create an artistic environment for artists and art lovers in our corner of Southern Chester County. What is coming up? In November our Artisan Gift Shop will open. Local artist will showcase their arts and crafts from November 18 – December 23. The Artisan Gift Shop is open 6 days a week 10 – 6 pm with extended hours on Fridays until 8 pm. This year will have a limited number of Historic Oxford Ornaments. This year, the Octoraro Hotel is featured on the ornament. They are exclusively for sale in our Gift Shop for $15. On Small Business Saturday, we will host our popular Petite Paintings. Local artist donate a 6 x 6 canvas painting to benefit our scholarship fund. The event will be held on Saturday November 26 9 – 11 a.m. at Flickerwood Wine Cellars (33 South Third Street). All paintings are $30. I love what you are doing! How can I help? We adore volunteers! Please reach out to us if you are interested in spending some time working beside us. As with all non-profits, we rely on donations and financial support to continue our good work. Support us by including us in your workplace giving campaign through United Way or we graciously accept donations to support our mission directly on our website. he mural was started in midSeptember with estimated completion in the next few weeks (weather permitting). Local artist Susan Melrath created, designed and is painting the mural on the side of the building that faces the lawn of Edward Jones. Holiday Traditions? Holiday Shopping? Think Oxford, Pa. By Carla Lucas

S

Oxford Chamber’s website (oxfordpa.org) will give you hundreds of ideas on ways to support local businesses this holiday season. Saturday, November 26, is Small Business Saturday. It kicks-off the holidays for Oxford’s merchants, who are prepared with all kinds of merchandise and some holiday fun. If it’s been a while since you’ve shopped downtown Oxford, take some time and discover what you are missing. New merchants came to town this fall including The Maroon Hornet with comics and collectibles and Lola (Lots of Lovely Apparel), a women’s apparel store. Holiday decorating begins for many in November. Visit Cameron’s Hardware and Supply for fresh trees, lights, ornaments and decorations. Angie Lobb, of Cameron’s says they have the store stocked in November for all those who like to plan ahead. Honeysuckle Trails Country Craft on Barnsley Road offers great ideas and items for interior decorating with sections of the store dedicated to Christmas year-round. Soap Bucket, on Locust Street, offers many holiday scented soy-based candles and soaps to help bring the holiday spirit to your home. All three stores offer great gifts for those on your shopping list. Fresh is best obtained by shopping local. Gorgeous holiday centerpieces, floral arrangements and plants can be found at Buchanan’s Buds and Blossoms, on North Third Street, and Philips Florists, on Market Street. Fresh baked goods, fresh vegetables and fresh cheese, and locally butchered meats are available at the Oxford Farmers Market, which is only open on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays, so plan ahead. Flickerwood Wine Cellars offers many Pennsylvania made meats, cheeses, wines and spirits plus other tasty treats for holiday gatherings. Sherokee Mushroom Farm’s retail center can provide you with many varieties of the freshest mushrooms around for all your holiday entertaining. Oxford’s antique and thrift shops such as Neighborhood Thrift Center, Pickled Pickles Boutique and Oxford Odds and Ends, offer great values on slightly used, repurposed,

ure there’s the tree lighting in Rockefeller Center, but there’s also a spectacular tree lighting on the Green in Oxford, Pa. Sure you can serve an Italian, French or Napa Valley wine at a holiday party, but Flickerwood’s wines are just as unique; they are made in Pennsylvania and their only Eastern Pennsylvania tasting room is located on South Third Street, right in downtown Oxford. Or if beer is what’s called for, bring a growler or two from Bog Turtle Brewery, which is handcrafted and sold in Oxford, Pa. Why order chocolates and candies online when with a quick trip to The Candy Case or Neuchatel Chocolates you can have great gifts for friends and coworkers or all the stocking stuffers you’d need. You don’t need to travel to other states to shop for fine jewelry gifts, Millstone Jewelers is right on Third Street. From fun holiday activities for the whole family to unique gifts, decorations, and food think Oxford first. The merchants in town go all out with window decorations. The mood in downtown is cheery and festive.“Come downtown, there’s lots to do,” says Heidi Kern, Executive Director of the Oxford Chamber of Commerce. An Oxford Holiday Tradition Checklist is provided for you to easily find ways to celebrate in Oxford. Country Christmas on Dec. 2 kicks-off much of the holiday events in Oxford. This popular First Friday event brings the whole town together with various holidaythemed activities, culminating with the Tree Lighting on the Green. Oxford’s annual Christmas tree is decorated for free by Oatmen Tree Services, the same company that does Herr’s Holiday Lights. “Our tree looks amazing each year,” says Kern. “Oatmen does a phenomenal job with the lights and decorations.” Check Oxford Chamber’s website often for up to the minute details of all that is happening that evening. “The holidays are a good time to shop local,” says Kern, “Our merchants support the community all year long. We are encouraging you to support our merchants by setting a goal of shopping 80-percent locally this holiday season.” A few quick clicks through the Business Directory on

McCormick Martial Arts Studio, Oxford Karate Institute or Oxford Center for Dance expose kids to new activities and can keep them moving over winter. Oxford Arts Alliance offers many music and art classes that could enrich a friend’s life. Then for those who need a break, give a gift certificate for cut and color from Studio Blush or Alluring Images Hair Studio. Be sure to put Oxford’s merchants on your shopping list. When you support the local businesses you are supporting your neighbors and community.

and antique items. Oxford Market Antiques plus other antique shops further out along Route 10 give lots of reasons to plan a day for browsing their inventories to find great gifts and holiday decorations. A little advanced planning and you could have one-ofa-kind handmade gifts for the grandparents and other special people from the Oxford Arts Alliance’s Paint-YourOwn Pottery workshops. Held every Saturday at 11 am, these workshops are opportunities to make personal gifts for special people on your gift-giving list. Or start a new holiday tradition by gathering a group for a private pottery painting party. Details are available at oxfordart.org. November’s 3rd on Third (Nov. 18) kicks-off the Artisan Gift Shop in Oxford at the Oxford Arts Alliance Gallery where you can buy great gifts from local artists and artisans. The shop is open Monday through Saturday until Dec. 23 from 9 am to 6 pm with extended hours on Fridays until 8 pm. For handmade, fair trade gifts and products from around the world, First Presbyterian of Oxford operates a Ten Thousand Village gift boutique. It opens on November’s First Friday (Nov. 4) from 5 to 9 pm, again for December’s Country Christmas on Dec. 2 from 5 to 9 pm and then Saturdays and Sundays from Nov.6 to Dec. 11 from 9 am to 1 pm. Among the gift items there are also great food items such as olive oils, coffees, teas, and snacks. Animal lovers have great choices at Oxford Feed and Lumber. Check out their assortment of scarves, hats, gloves and muck boots. There are horse and animal themed one of a kind home décor and gift ideas. Then, for those who love to treat their pets, think cozy coats and sweaters, luxurious beds, plus all the latest toys and treats for your furry friends. Oxford is lucky to have four unique factory outlet stores in the area. Herr’s Snack Foods Visitor Center is a great place to pick up favorite treats for parties or mailing to family and friends no longer in the area. Outback Trading Company’s clothing is bought by mail order all over the world, but the people of Oxford can come to Third Street and look around their outlet for some great buys. Neuchatel Chocolates’ factory outlet on Limestone Road sells the handmade Swiss chocolates at the factory. New to Oxford, is Limelight Planners, a company that creates personalized organizers. Located on Market Street, a stop by their store and you can see first hand all the personalization options for their products. Memberships, classes, and gift certificates make great gifts. In Oxford, give a golf-lover a certificate for a round at Wyncote. A YMCA membership or one to Snap Fitness makes a great gift for the coming new year. Classes at

Chambers, Austin MacKnight, Joseph Yannucci, and Chandler Drennan to celebrate their all earning the Eagle Scout rank. The boys started their scouting journey together in Oxford’s Cub Scout Pack 213. MacKnight started as a Tiger Cub. He was joined by Chambers in second grade as a Wolf Scout. Both Drennan and Yannucci joined a year later as Bear scouts. Finally Barr started

t is pretty much unheard of for five youth to stay together as one patrol through the eight years of Boy Scouts, says James Sweed, Oxford Boy Scout Troop 44’s Scoutmaster. It is really rare for all of the boys to earn the rank of Eagle Scout and even rarer for them to have been together in the Cub Scout program, too. But in May, Troop 44 celebrated this rare occurance with a Court of Honor for Joe Barr, Ethan

with Ethan. Ethan’s parents as well as his own parents encouraged him to get involved. “Eventually I warmed up to the idea and enjoyed it,” he says. “I joined Boy Scouts to have something to do after school to improve myself and have fun at the same time,” says MacKnight. “I started as a Tiger Cub and I planned way back then to get my Eagle and I wanted to follow through.”

as a Webelos One scout in fourth grade. From there, the five stayed together in Scouting through their senior year in high school. “I first joined Cub Scouts because my older brother was in Boy Scouts and I wanted to join as well,” says Yannucci about his Scouting experience. “What made me stay involved all the way through to the rank of Eagle Scout was not only all the different fun events I was able to participate in, but also all the friends I made.” “I joined scouts to meet new people, learn important skills, and serve the community,” says Barr. “I decided to stick with Scouts because I knew that getting Eagle Scout was very attractive to colleges and future employers.” Chambers adds he started in Cub Scouts because his father talked about it. He had a friend in Scouting and at that young age Scouting seemed like the coolest thing. “Going out, living in the sticks, knives and fires, what boy wouldn’t want that?” he remembers. Drennan adds that he was neighbors and friends

other things. Not only have these things helped me in the past, they will continue to help me throughout everything I do in my future.” “Scouting helped me learn good life skills including respect, leadership and responsibility,” adds MacKnight. “Through scouting and the five of us together all eight years I learned the importance of working as a group,” says Drennan. “We had to put up with each other (to accomplish things). Now it is easier for me to work with other people. Scouting was a good experience and I’m glad I did it. I am sure it helped me get into college.” “Scouting helped me by allowing me to build relationships with fellow scouts,” says Barr, “and teaching me several useful skills such as fire building, first aid, and knot tying. For my job as a lifeguard at the YMCA, I came into the training ahead of other candidates because I already had a firm understanding of first aid. Also, for Army ROTC our team is learning several knots, which I already know due to my training in Boy Scouts.” “I’d like to see more Oxford youth join Scouts so they can learn respect, work ethic and tolerance,” says MacKnight. “These skills are so important in life. Lastly, I feel all five of us made it all the way up through the ranks to Eagle Scouts because we challenged each other and worked really well together, mostly we had great leadership.” “I would highly suggest that parents get their children into scouting so that they can socialize and have fun, learn many valuable skills, and become better prepared for life,” says Yannucci. Troop 44 began in Oxford in 1949. Throughout its long service to the youth and community of Oxford, it has honored 96 Scouts who earned the rank of Eagle Scout. According to Sweed, nationally only three percent of boys who start Boy Scouts earns the Eagle Rank, but in Troop 44 26 percent of the boys earn the rank. Troop 44 expects to have its 100th Eagle Scout within a year. Sweed invites all interested youth ages 10 to 17 and their parents to learn more aboute Troop 44’s

The members of Troop 44’s Bison patrol were exposed to many adventures and activities from canoeing and kayaking to repelling and camping. They had the opportunity to participate in Boy Scouts’ high adventures like treking the desert in New Mexico and sailing in the Carribean. The boys highlighted attending the West Point Military Academy Camporee as one of their favorite events. “We were able to do things that the typical camp out did not offer,” says Barr. “Anything from land navigation to obstacle courses to learning how to camouflage ourselves was available at that special camping trip.” “I learned so many skills during all my years in camp and doing all the events that will help me throughout my life,” says MacKnight, “and I had a lot of fun. Going through all the ranks, knowing I’m achieving something that will lead up to what I’m really striving for, made me feel great.” In order to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, candidates must complete a community service project that not only helps a segment of the community, but also demonstrates planning and leadership skills. This, as well as, a myriad of other leadership and skills requirements must be completed by a Scout’s 18th birthday. All five boys completed their projects and all requirments, some just barely before their cut-off date. “The boys truly stuck together and it was awesome to watch them succeed,” says Sweed. (See text box that describes each Scout’s community service project). “Without a doubt. Not a day goes by that I don’t recognize and appreciate the leadership, communication, and many other skills that I learned while involved with the program and I can say in full confidence that I’d be a very different person,” says Chambers. “It has helped me many, many, times in life.” “Scouting has helped me in many ways throughout my life,” add Yannucci. “It has given me many valuable life skills and taught me very important lessons. I learned how to cook, how to use first aid in order to treat medical problems, how to tie knots, how to work as a team, how to be a successful leader, the importance of time management and many

Troop 44 Eagle Scout’s Community Service Projects Ethan Chambers For my Eagle Scout project I designed and installed a complete audio system and complete theatrical lighting system for a youth theater in Rising Sun, Md., called Streetlamp Productions. It benefitted the greater Oxford community by providing the organization with the tools to give the kids involved a better and more elaborate experience of theater and improving the

program at one of their meetings. Troop 44 meets Wednesday evenings, 7 pm, at the Oxford Youth Cabin at Lincoln and Wheeler streets. Search Troop 44 Oxford on Facebook for more information or visit their website at: www.orgsites.com/pa/troop44bsa/. quality of the program. This program teaches many beneficial skills such as self-confidence and communication. I chose the project because I knew it was something I could do very well, and I had been involved in similar programs that had been more corporate and I didn’t like how that affected the program so I decided I’d help these kids out.

For my Eagle Scout project, I designed, planned and built two separate privacy pads for two sets of portable restrooms at the Oxford Area Recreation Authority Park. There was a recurring problem of people using their trucks to tip the portable restrooms over, which created problems for anyone using the park. My project created a level surface as well as a three sided enclosure for the units in order to eliminate this problem and allow the park to continue providing restrooms to the community.

For my Eagle Scout project, I painted a basement, filled in a sinkhole, and built a set of steps for the Neighborhood Services Center right on the main street of Oxford. The Neighborhood Center serves the community, so my service to them indirectly serves the community. Painting the basement and filling in the sink hole will solve their problem of having water leak into the basement. And the new set of steps will allow them to utilize an exterior door which was previously not used due to the old stairs being broken.

For my Eagle Scout project, I restored both campsites at the Oxford Area Recreational Park. The grass was overgrown, the picnic benches and wood seating were not reliable and the fire pits were in need of restoring. I mowed the entire area, tore down all benches and tables, and tore out the old brick fire rings. I built four new picnic tables, four new seating areas and replaced the fire pits with two new sturdy stone fire pits. The Oxford Area Recreational Park is open to the public. The newly improved campsites provides residents of Oxford a nice, safe place to camp or have a nice cookout.

For my Eagle Scout project, I repaired the service shed at Manor Presbyterian Church, in Cochranville. It involved repairing the siding, laying new floorboards, painting, and creating a flower bed around the shed. I learned a lot about planning and completing the project as I started planning in the summer of 2014 and wasn’t able to complete the project until the fall of 2015. We could only work when the weather was warm.

WHO’S WHO IN WATER TREATMENT

HISTORY

Developed and patented in the Netherlands by Mr. Jan P. de Baat Doelman, Scalewatcher technology was introduced to the European market in the 1980s. With immediate market success, Mr. Doelman brought the technology to the United States and applied and received a patent in 1991. From that moment on, Scalewatcher North America has been on the forefront of environmentally-sensitive water treatment. Located in Oxford, Pennsylvania, Scalewatcher North America continues to lead the industry in descaling products that do no harm to the environment.

Scalewatcher focuses on bringing environmentally-sensitive products to North America.

MISSION

Scalewatcher North America focuses on the elimination of scale and the problems associated with scale build up. Industries know the costs involved in keeping their capital investments running smooth. Scalewatcher is there to help. Scaled cooling towers, chillers, and associated equipment can negatively impact a company’s bottom line, and not just in cash. The caustic chemicals used to remove scale only create more problems with the environment. Your company can “GO GREEN” and stay within your budget.
