Welcome to Sandbach United Good evening and welcome to this North West Counties League Division 1 South game against Sandbach United. We welcome their officials, players and supporters to the Step Places stadium here at Brookburn Road and we hope they enjoy our hospitality today. This is the first competitive game between the two sides although we did visit Sandbach for a pre season friendly a couple of seasons ago. We don’t have to wait long for our 2nd meeting as Sandbach return here in 11 days time in the quarter final of the playermatch.com Cup. Before then there are precious league points to play for, with Sandbach currently 14th in the league while recent results have seen us rise to 5th place. With 4 promotion places available we need to carry on picking up points if we are to break into the top 4. A notable result in Sandbach’s season came back in August when they made a great effort to beat our FA Vase record score of 15-1 by defeating Wem Town 13-0. Our last home game on 14 January saw us defeat Cammell Laird 2-1. Since then we have had a 4 game road trip. We were very unfortunate to go down 2-1 at in form Cheadle Town in a game we dominated for long periods. This was followed by arguably our best performance of the season to win 1-0 at Stone Old Alleynians, especially as they are one of the teams we are chasing for a top 4 spot. Our next trip was to another top 4 challenger in Wythenshawe Town where we produced a tremendous 2nd half fightback to come from 2 goals down to earn a vital point. This was the replayed game following the abandonment of the original game due to a severe player injury. Town were 2 goals to the good at the time of the abandonment and as such will probably feel slightly aggrieved at the loss of 2 points, however after the effort we put in during the 2nd half we fully deserved our point. Last Saturday we finished our mini tour with a superb 2nd half performance to defeat Cheadle Heath Nomads 5-0. After a closely fought 1st half we took the lead just before the break and then cut loose with some clinical attacking play in the 2nd half. The team has shown a real determination over the last few games following the disruption over the holiday period caused by the enforced managerial change and inevitable change in personnel and we feel we can look forward to the rest of the season with renewed optimism. We now embark on a run of 6 consecutive homes games, 5 of which are in the league, and include home games on every Saturday in February, which will be welcomed by our supporters and will also assist the club hugely by way of cash flow. Also without wishing to tempt fate, and weather permitting, tonight is our last scheduled evening fixture of the season. We start this sequence by welcoming Eccleshall this Saturday 1st February ko 3pm. Following our 4-0 win there in the 1st game of the season, Eccleshall have proved to be one of the surprise packets of the season and currently sit in 4th place, so this will be another vital game for us. Today’s visitors Sandbach then return here on Saturday 8th February in the playermatch.com Cup ko 3pm. .

Thank you for visiting Step Places Stadium and have a safe journey home.

Manager’s Notes… Good evening and a big welcome back to The Step Places Stadium to all the West fans. After 4 away games in a row, it’s great to have a home fixture, its strange how the fixtures now give us a run of home games! I’d particularly like to take this opportunity to make a special mention to our traveling fans during the recent run of away games. The support the lads have had from you has been phenomenal and it really hasn’t gone unnoticed in the dressing room - you 100% have been our 12th man!!! I’d also like to welcome everyone from Sandbach United, we hope everyone connected with our visitors receives a warm welcome this evening and we wish you well for the season, after our next game on the 8th February! Myself and the rest of the new backroom team (Craig- Assistant Manager, Lenny1st Team Coach & Lee- Physio) thank everyone for their support and I hope especially over the last 6 games it is starting to be clear the style of football we want to play, the type of team cohesion we want and also the quality of player we want to be bring to West. Since joining the club there has been a number of new arrivals (as well as a few departures) but as alluded to before there is a real togetherness in the dressing room and we are all focused now on building on our recent performances. Enjoy the game & hopefully see some of you after the game in the bar. Come on West! Chris Rowley

trap, the away number 10 dragged wide of the far post with only Jones to beat. With 15 minutes to go, the heavens opened – and essentially created an entirely different game, best analysed away from the rest of the performance. As the game became more stretch, Curtis Miller – a threat all game – carried the ball into the box, striking it high and true towards the back post, finding the roof of the net and giving the home support hope of a stressfree end to the game. As is usual at Brookburn Road, this wasn’t to be the case.

West began their 2020 home campaign with a vital three points and a fine performance, although the visitors may have left the Step Places Stadium feeling like they should’ve had a share of the spoils. A league-high crowd of 354 were in fine voice, even as the opening exchanges provided little to get excited about, with the most notable event of the opening half an hour being a scrambled effort finding the bar, as Chris Middleton failed to capitalise on some chaos in the box. The strong wind was maybe the biggest influence on the game, with West corners being blown out of play and – on one occasion – almost eluding everyone and curling straight in. However, it would be an aerial route that broke the deadlock, Curtis Miller finding space down the right before drilling it at head height across the face of goal. James Cottee was at hand to force the ball home, sending the shed end into raptures just before half time.

A mad minute saw captain Sam Heathcote earn two yellow cards – one for apparent dissent, one for a foul – and leave West with only 10 men for the last 5 minutes. Laird, sensing an opportunity and with nothing to lose, pushed forward. The pressure eventually told, with Paul Jewell – not that one – pulling one back for the visitors in the 90th minute following a scramble in the box. Making every use of the ample added time provided by the officials, West were on the back foot again almost straight from kick-off, Andrew Jones having to make a big save in yet another game of goalmouth pinball, before smothering the loose ball to keep all three points in Chorlton. Through near-torrential rain, the lads were clapped off, before the home support went home both happy and soggy.

While some good football was played by both sides in the first period, the break seemed to sap any fluency from the tie. Middleton again made himself a nuisance, having an effort cleared off the line. Lee Gavin, always a dynamo in midfield, did his best to keep the game ticking over, while Gabidon and Cook offered width down either wing – but it was a through ball straight through the middle that gave Laird their best chance of the game. Racing through on goal after beating the offside

15 January 2020 Cheadle Town 2 (Davin 13, Brooks 76) West 1 (Gavin 36) Att: 106 West fell to a first defeat of 2020 on a frustrating evening at Cheadle Town.

circumstances when his cross looped in off the crossbar.

Chris Rowley’s side had the majority of the ball at Park Road but were undone by Patrick Davin and Ben Brooks goals either side of Lee Gavin’s equaliser.

Brooks ensured the points would be staying in Cheadle with 14 minutes remaining, tapping home a cross after West had been caught out by a long ball down the right channel.

First Division South leading scorer Davin gave his side the lead after just 13 minutes, seizing on a loose ball and beating Andrew Jones to prod into the net.

West: A. Jones, Cook, Gabidon, Tinker, Heathcote, McLellan, Miller, Gavin, Cottee (Matthews 73), Boland, Blackwell (C. Jones 86). Not used: Ryan, Newns, Argent-Barnes.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser and after James Cottee spurned a presentable opportunity, rounding ex-West keeper Marcus Burgess but shooting into the side netting, Gavin found the net in fortuitous

Explaining Our Social Enterprise Partnership with…

Bounceback Food Cookery workshops & supper clubs in 2020 WEST agree social enterprise partnership with Bounceback Food CIC that will bring cookery workshops & supper clubs to Brookburn Road! This year WEST will once again be partnering with social enterprise Bounceback Food CIC – a community cookery school that supports people living in food poverty in Greater Manchester, Cheshire & North Wales. The non-profit organisation uses the 'buy one, give one' model on their public cookery courses to generate free places for people using foodbanks/getting third sector support and sells staple items of food (pasta, soup, rice etc.) in the same way as part of their foodbank drive at market events.

of their popular Secret dishes from around the world cookery courses from the clubhouse throughout the year (tickets are already sold out until May!). For every ticket bought, a free place is then given to someone referred to the club via the Longford Centre or Barakah Food Aid – ensuring the whole community can come together and share the joy of cooking. Tickets are available via their Eventbrite page or you can gift someone a place by buying them a voucher via their website.

We will be hosting several fundraising supper clubs as part of our Target 50 campaign too throughout the year – keep an eye on our social media and blog for dates and ticket information!

This proactive approach to tackling food poverty has helped them to teach over 1,500 people how to cook, donate almost 10,000 items of food to foodbanks and provide over 50,000 meals as part of their wider community outreach work which also includes catering (e.g. our bonfire party), supper clubs and corporate cook offs!

Find out more about Bounceback at www.bouncebackfood.co.uk.

After a successful pilot in September, we’ve agreed to let Bounceback run more

They are also on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram, search ‘Bounceback Food’.

West Team of the Decade picked by Rob McKay To end out the decade, we asked Rob – a man who has probably seen West in action just about as much as anyone else over the course of the past 10 years – to select his team that he defined the decade for West. Featuring fan favourites, and current club legends, it was a tough task but one he navigated with aplomb. History of Sandbach United Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge.

In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over ÂŁ2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education facility. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season.;

In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season.

United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The North West Counties Division one league for the 2016/17 season. The clubs first season in the NWCFL D1 League was better than they could have dreamt, winning the Macron Club of the Month in December, finishing in 6th place and the playoffs in Division 1 as well as being Reusch First Division Challenge Cup Runners up. Their goal keeper, Ryan Moss also collected two Reusch Keeper of the Month awards. In another first for the club, the 2017/18 season saw the club enter The FA Vase with a home 2nd Qualifying Round fixture against AFC Emley.; The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base. United have teams playing in the Mid -Cheshire Youth League and the Cheshire Girls League among others and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.

Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals.; As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90's they left that site and for 5 years the Senior home ground was at Sandbach cricket club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed over 100 years ago, playing in the Cheshire County League and winning the Cheshire FA Senior Cup in 1914, before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s.

Match Report… 18th January Stone Old Alleynians 0 West 1 (Hall 31) Att: 64 West produced one of their best performances of the season to claim a vital three points at promotion rivals Stone Old Alleynians.

The home side saw more of the ball after the restart but an obstinate West defence, including Matt Cook in an unfamiliar centreback role, kept clear chances to a minimum. Stone’s big opportunity came and went with 20 minutes remaining, when a right-wing cross was headed onto the post with Jones rooted to the spot.

A moment of inspiration from Stephen Hall just after the half hour proved to be enough, and the visitors could even afford the luxury of spurning opportunities from the penalty spot in either half.

Blackwell forced a save from Alcock as West looked for the cushion of a second goal, and when substitute Reece Coley was bundled over in the box with five minutes remaining Callum Jones assumed the responsibility of ending the game as a contest. However, his effort was overcooked, hitting the bar and going over and ensuring a nerve-shredding final few minutes.

Chris Rowley’s side, looking to respond after the frustrating reverse at Cheadle Town, were as easy on the eye with the ball as they were tenacious without it, and could have taken an early lead after seven minutes. A free kick from the right bounced up onto a Stone defender’s hand, but Hall shot too close to home keeper Adam Alcock from the resulting spot kick.

Rowley’s side were not about to throw away all of their good work, though, and after Callum Jones cleared away a final Stone set-piece, the visitors could celebrate a timely away win that closes the gap on the First Division South promotion places with key visit to Wythenshawe Town on the horizon.

West shook off this disappointment and George Blackwell could have found an opener when he shot over from a promising position inside the area, but Stone, who handed West their first defeat of the league season in September, shot across the bows when a forward ran through on goal and fired narrowly wide of Andrew Jones’ far post.

West: A. Jones, C. Jones, Gabidon, Tinker, Cook, McLellan, Matthews (ArgentBarnes 75), Gavin, Hall (Coley 64), Ryan (Dale 90), Blackwell.

The visitors took a deserved lead on 31 minutes, with Hall making amends for his earlier miss in impudent fashion – good work from Blackwell and Josh Tinker led to Hall finding space on the edge of the box, and his chip could only be palmed into the net by the onrushing Alcock.

Match Reports from our 2 – 2 draw with Wythenshawe Town and Saturday’s 5-0 win over Cheadle Heath Nomads will be in Saturday’s programme against Eccleshall.l

Women’s Match Report… We did increase our lead on 41 minutes, Rach getting on the end of a Caddy free-kick to make it 3-0, and just before half-time, the score took on a more realistic look when Rach completed her hat-trick with a powerful run and finish into the roof of the net. HT 4-0

WEST 7 Morecambe Women’s Reserves 0 Att: 40 Despite a mist enveloping the ground and refusing to budge all day, we still managed to get our first home game since November underway.

West started the second half on the front foot, scoring immediately from the kick-off. Sophie tapping in from a Rach cross. 5-0.

This was the Argyle Sports Cup match originally due to take place last weekend but thankfully the pitch had recovered to a “soft in places, but playable” state, and it was game on.

On 54 minutes Rach was rewarded with a well earned rest, Paige Chalmers coming on, taking up her position on the right wing and Sophie moving up front.

Jami had the first chance of the game after only a minute, but her right footed shot was easy for the keeper. Unfortunately for Jami, her game was over after just 8 minutes, a muscular problem meaning she had to be replaced by Woodsy.

Morecambe looked a little more resolute following that early goal and it was some time before West carved out another chance. On 68 minutes, Sophie put in a great cross, but Woodsy couldn’t get on the end of it. It’s worth mentioning here that whilst Woodsy hadn’t had much luck, she had absolutely worked her socks off since replacing Jami, and deserved more!

West built on a positive start and a fantastic move, started by Woodsy as she got to a loose ball first and found Rach Dunlop who in turn played a superb ball to Sophie Bracegirdle, the ball eventually finding its way to Woodsy who had continued her run into the box. Her effort from 2 yards out was placed spectacularly wide into the car park behind the shed end.

On 83 minutes, an absolutely cock-a-hoop Katy Wilman came on. Beset with the lurgy she’s a martyr to her chest when there’s fog in th’air. 5 minutes later Sophie scored again, linking up brilliantly with Woodsy and finishing at the second attempt. 6-0.

On 18 minutes we had the ball in the net for the first time. Great link up play between Frisby and Rach who fires the ball towards goal. Woodsy taps in……and the flag is up immediately for offside.

On 89 minutes, Woodsy’s match was summed up perfectly. A cross from the right hitting the back of her head, and dropping perfectly for Sophie to complete her hat-trick from 1 yard, Woodsy face down in the mud.

It wasn’t long before we took the lead though. A short clearance by the Morecambe keeper was intercepted by Meg Clarkson who ran into the area and drilled a left foot shot across the keeper and in off the post. 1-0. On 26 minutes, Rach Dunlop had a good run through the visitors’ defence and fired past the keeper from the edge of the area. 2-0.

That was the final action, West running out comfortable 7-0 winners and looking forward to an away trip to near neighbours Manchester Stingers in the next round. Team: Fish (GK), Dolan, Clarkson, Caddick (Wilman 83′), Mason, Bracegirdle, Kerr, Frisby, Jones, Hodges (Woods 8′), Dunlop (Chalmers 54′) Goalscorers: Dunlop (3), Bracegirdle (3), Clarkson (1)

West continued to dominate possession but were struggling to create enough chances to reflect their domination. A case in point on 38 minutes With another disallowed goal. Rach’s shot hit the post, the deflection finding Woodsy who taps into the net……but she’s offside. Groundhog Goal.
