Dr. R. Lorraine (Laurie) Bernotsky was unanimously named the 16th president of West Chester University by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), effective July 1, 2024. A longstanding champion for public education and State System students, Dr. Bernotsky is a first-generation college graduate who leads the largest *R2 institution within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Prior to being named president, Dr. Bernotsky held the position of interim president of Pennsylvania Western University (PennWest) as a loaned executive from West Chester University. Known for being a transformative leader in higher education, Dr. Bernotsky is prepared to help West Chester University chart its path toward the next 150 years.
As a collaborative and inclusive leader who is centered on student success, Dr. Bernotsky holds nearly three decades of progressive experience in higher education. She began her career at West Chester University in 1996 as a member of the political science faculty. When the opportunity opened to serve as associate provost and dean of graduate studies at West Chester University, she competed in a national search for the role and served for several years before becoming provost in 2015.
As West Chester University’s provost, Dr. Bernotsky successfully led the University’s Academic Affairs Division, which oversees approximately 850 faculty and is comprised of six colleges, as well as two schools, that offers more than 100 academic degree programs while also housing the Office of Institutional Research, the Center for International Programs (now the Center for Global Engagement), the offices of undergraduate admissions, enrollment management, financial aid, the graduate school, and undergraduate student support services.
Executive vice president was added to Dr. Bernotsky’s role in 2017 and, as the University’s second-in-command, she also assumed leadership of the University’s budget and labor relations function.
Recognized throughout the Commonwealth as a highly respected and effective higher education leader, Dr. Bernotsky was asked by Chancellor Daniel Greenstein to serve PennWest temporarily in the fall of 2022 as executive vice president and chief operating officer, providing guidance and direction in all operational areas. From October 2022 through June 2023, Dr. Bernotsky worked collaboratively in this loaned capacity to help strengthen PennWest’s operational excellence, strategic enrollment management systems, and long-term plans for financial sustainability. The positive effects of Dr. Bernotsky’s work ultimately led to her appointment as interim president of PennWest on July 1, 2023 by PASSHE’s Board of Governors; she assumed the role four months after her appointment as PennWest’s acting president and following the retirement of PennWest founding president, Dr. Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson.
Terry Beattie begins his ninth athletic campaign as the Director of Athletics at West Chester University and 20th overall as a member of the Golden Rams’ athletic department. Previous to being named the Interim AD in 2017, Beattie served as the Associate AD overseeing facilities and game day operations. He also oversaw all of the grounds and equipment room operations for the athletic department.
A 32-year veteran in college athletics, Beattie recently spearheaded the development of the Michael Horrocks Emerging Leaders Institute at WCU, which provides leadership training and development to a select group of outstanding student athletes who, as recognized future leaders, will be taking on the mantle of leadership within their team sometime in the future.
In his eight years as the university’s athletics director, Beattie created a Sports Performance aspect to the athletic department implementing additional resources from which WCU student-athletes could benefit. His collaboration with a number of other areas on campus gives student-athletes access to mental health and sport psychology experts, an expanded and much improved strength and conditioning program as well as education on sport nutrition.
His work in the field of Sport Leadership Training gives West Chester University’s coaching staff and administrators access to some of the cutting edge research on how to become a better leader, coach and mentor to young adults.
He has also served on a number of strategic planning committee’s both within the athletic department and in conjunction with the university. During his previous 14 years in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Beattie has chaired search committees to replace head coaches and assistant athletic directors while coordinating scheduling for West Chester University’s numerous athletic facilities. He has also served on search committees on the university side.
Beattie supervised the athletic department’s nine on-campus facilities, including both John A. Farrell Stadium and Serpico Stadium as well as Vonnie Gros Field.
A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Beattie was recently named the chair of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athletic Administrators for the 2023-24 campaign. He has also served roles on the NCAA regional and national advisory committees overseeing selections to the NCAA Division II Tournament in a variety of sports.

Opening Tip... After seeing its season-best five-game winning streak halted on Saturday at Bloomsburg, the West Chester University women’s basketball team will look to conclude its home slate with a victory, which would go a long way in clearing up the PSAC Tournament picture against Millersville on Wednesday night. West Chester is currently part of a log jam of teams in the middle of the PSAC standings, jockeying for a home PSAC Tournament game when the Tournament gets underway on March 3. With a win, West Chester would put itself in the driver’s seat for a home First Round game by virtue of wins over Lock Haven and Kutztown earlier this season, along with a season sweep of East Stroudsburg. West Chester is 43-13 (.767) at home since November 2021, and to take it a step further, the Golden Rams are 37-6 (.860) at home since November 22, which includes the team’s 27-game winning streak at home, which was halted in December after starting in January 2023. West Chester holds a slim 52-48 lead in the all-time series vs Millersville, which dates back to a 1969 61-52 setback at the hands of the Marauders. West Chester has won eight of 10 against Millersville, including four of the last five, with the lone two exceptions being a January 2020 loss at Millersville and a loss in Pucillo earlier this year. West Chester has not lost to Millersville in Hollinger since a 69-68 setback in February 2012 when Allison Hostetter was one of three Golden Rams in double figures with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, along with eight rebounds and eight assists.
WCU Women’s Basketball Notes ..West Chester suffered its first loss since January 29 on Saturday afternoon at Bloomsburg by a 7155 final. This setback halted a five-game winning streak for West Chester, the season’s longest winning streak for head coach Kiera Wooden’s charges. West Chester fell behind by 12 in the first quarter and could never fully come back in the 16-point loss as the Golden Rams trailed by as many as 22 with just under six minutes to play in regulation after an 11-0 Husky run. West Chester shot just 37.7 % (20-of-53) from the field, including an 0-for-10 effort from three-point range, while also going 15-for-23 (65.2 %) at the line. Bloomsburg shot an impressive 44.4 % (24-of-54) from the field, including 50.0 % (10-for-20) from three-point range, while also going 13-for-15 (86.7 %) at the charity stripe. Despite the loss, Michelle Kozicki led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting and 13 rebounds for her team-best 17th double-double of the year, which ranks third in Division II women’s basketball heading into the final week of the regular season. Kozicki ranks second in the PSAC in scoring, averaging 20.8 points per game, while her 10.6 rebounds per game are fourth best in the league. The senior forward has 17 double-doubles to her name, including 10 in 11 games, which ranks her in a tie for third in D2 in double-doubles while also ranking second in the PSAC. Emily Chmiel of ESU leads the PSAC and D2 in double-doubles with 21. Kozicki has also scored 35 points twice since December 17, becoming the first player to score 35 or more twice in the same season since Leah Johnson, who, along with Mitzi Reitnouer, are the only two Golden Rams to accomplish this feat. Anna McTamney is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. McTamney is seventh in the league in scoring, making West Chester the only team in the PSAC East and one of just two in the league to place two players in the top 10 in the league in scoring. Erin Daley has turned in an excellent stretch of basketball for West Chester since a career-high 19 points vs Kutztown on 1/11; Daley has scored in double figures six times in 11 games, including four of the last six, which includes an 18-point effort in the win at Lock Haven on February 1. The sophomore forward is now averaging 8.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game heading into the final weeks of the 2024-25 regular season. As a team, West Chester averages 65.8 points per game on 39.8 % shooting from the field and 26.5 % from three-point range. West Chester also leads the PSAC and ranks eighth in Division II in free throw shooting, connecting on 79.0 % of its attempts at the stripe.
Millersville Women’s Basketball Notes...Millersville (15-11) enters the last week of the regular season in a similar position to the Golden Rams, knowing its season will continue in the PSAC Tournament next week but knowing where that game will be on Monday, March 3 is an open question. The Marauders also enter play on Wednesday following a Saturday loss, which saw the team fall to Lock Haven by a 54-47 final. Only one Marauder (Rhyan Mitchell) scored in double figures as the sophomore forward finished with 10 points off the bench. Freshman forward Bryn Zentner led the team in rebounding with seven in the loss. Millersville shot 38.8 % (19-of-49) from the field and 16.7 % (2-of-12) from three-point range, while also being outrebounded 41-28 and losing the turnover battle by an 18-13 margin. Kali March leads Millersville in scoring this year, averaging 15.8 points per game, while Brenna Ortwein is first in rebounding, averaging 6.6 rebounds per game. March is also first on the team in assists, averaging 3.7 helpers per game as the Marauders average 63.4 points per game on 41.3 % shooting from the field and 30.4 % from beyond the arc, while also outrebounding teams 38.8-38.1 on the year.
Up Next for the Golden Rams ... West Chester will head to Kutztown on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. tip to conclude the regular season. The Golden Rams will open the PSAC Tournament on Monday, March 3, at a location yet to be determined, although the results of Wednesday night’s games will go a long way in making that determination.

Opening Tip... After a pair of wins last week, including a crucial win over East Stroudsburg last Wednesday night, the West Chester men’s basketball team has at least a share of the PSAC East Regular Season crown secured for the second time in three years and will now shift its attention to winning the title outright this week. West Chester needs just one win in one of its last two games or an East Stroudsburg loss in one of the Warrior’s final two games to secure the No. 1 seed in the PSAC Tournament and the opportunity to host the PSAC Semifinals and Championship with a Quarterfinal victory on Wednesday. Wednesday night will be the latest chapter in one of the oldest rivalries in the PSAC as West Chester and Millersville clash for the 212th time, with the Golden Rams holding a slim 106-105 lead over the Marauders. This lead has shrunk considerably in recent years as the Marauders are on a three-game winning streak and have won eight of the last 10, with the lone exception being an 86-69 victory in West Chester in February 2020 and a 96-91 win in double overtime in February 2023. West Chester was swept by Millersville last year for the first time since 2021-22 and will look to avoid its first back-to-back season sweeps at the hands of the Marauders since the 1992-95 seasons when the Marauders won seven straight. West Chester will also be looking to remain unbeaten at home this season, entering play a perfect 13-0 in Hollinger in the midst of a 17-game home winning streak, which is the best in the PSAC and fourth best in Division II men’s basketball.
WCU Men’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester earned a share of the PSAC East Regular Season crown for the second time in three years on Saturday with an 86-74 victory over Bloomsburg, led by 21 points from Elijah Allen as one of five Golden Rams in double figures. West Chester led by as many as 21 late in the first half but had to withstand a late-game Husky rally to earn an 86-74 victory over Bloomsburg. West Chester shot 47.5 % (28-of-59) from the field, including 47.1 % (8-of-18) from three-point range, while also going 22-for-27 (81.5 %) at the free throw line. Elijah Allen has scored in double figures in 20 of his 25 games this year and led West Chester in scoring in 12 of those 20, including five of the last eight, as the senior guard has helped WCU post a record of 10-2 in such games. Allen enters play on Wednesday night averaging 15.5 points per game, which remains the best on the team, while his 1.8 assists per game are third best on the squad. Davante Dennis is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.2 points per game, while Josh Walker is third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.6 points per game, while his 7.3 rebounds per game is first on the team. West Chester enters play averaging 78.5 points per game on 42.5 % shooting from the field, including 32.4 % from beyond the arc. The Golden Rams also hold a 42.5-34.3 lead in rebounding, which remains seventh-best in Division II and second-best in the PSAC, including a 16.6 offensive rebound per game average, which is third best in the Nation.
Millersville Men’s Basketball Notes...Millersville (17-9, 13-6) enters play on Wednesday night riding a four-game winning streak, including an 86-66 victory over Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon in Pucillo Gymnasium. PSAC East Athlete of the Week, Drew Stover, led the Marauders in scoring in this victory with 32 points on a nearly perfect 15-of-16 from the field while also grabbing nine rebounds and coming away with two steals and a block in the 20-point victory. Millersville saw its entire starting five score in double figures in the victory and led 51-29 at the half en route to the 20-point victory. Millersville shot 52.5 % from the field, including 23.8 % from beyond the arc, while also connecting on 68.0 % at the free throw line in the victory. The Marauders ended the game with a 37-28 lead in rebounding and a narrow 16-13 lead in turnovers. For the year, Millersville enters play averaging 83.1 points per game on 49.3 % shooting from the field, including a 31.1 % effort from deep, while also shooting 73.8 % at the free throw line. The Marauders hold a 38.5-32.5 lead in rebounding, led by a 7.1 rebound per game average by Drew Stover, who also leads the team in scoring, averaging 17.9 points per game. The Marauders also hold a narrow 15.3-14.7 (+0.6) lead in turnovers, averaging 8.7 steals per game in the final week of the regular season.
Up Next for the Golden Rams ... West Chester will head to Kutztown on Saturday for its regular-season finale against the Golden Bears beginning at 3 p.m. before opening the PSAC Tournament with a home PSAC Quarterfinal on Wednesday, March 5, against an opponent yet to be determined.

From late August through early-to-mid March each school year, West Chester University’s cheerleaders are front and center at all Golden Rams football games in the fall and both men’s and women’s basketball games in the winter. Additionally, West Chester University’s cheerleaders have traveled to Orlando, Fla., and the Wide World of Sports in January to compete in the UCA Nationals. The Golden Rams Cheer Squad placed among the top five at UCA Nationals in each of the past four years, including a national championship effort last winter and a runner-up performance in 2023.
The cheerleaders work hard in the preseason learning mostly new material for the upcoming campaign, conditioning and developing a pride in the West Chester University community. Aside from preparing their 35-member team for the year ahead, the West Chester University cheerleaders also host high school clinics in order to develop cheerleading around the area.
The West Chester University cheerleaders take on many community service projects focusing mainly on breast cancer awareness, as well as doing many youth and high school cheering clinics, donating to needy schools and volunteering with the elderly within the West Chester community.
The team also makes many public appearances as representatives of WCU, highlighted each holiday season with a spot in the borough’s annual Christmas Parade.
