College of Business & Public Affairs Dr. Christopher Fiorentino, Dean Highlights of the year included the following:
• AACSB International Board of Directors ratified to extend the School of Business accreditation for an additional five years with the next maintenance review scheduled for 2016-2017. • MBA courses are now offered either online or in hybrid format. The GIS certificate is in the process of converting all courses to be online (several online courses will be offered this fall). At the undergraduate level, individual faculty had courses approved as online or hybrid as appropriate. • Overall, graduate enrollments in the college have increased 10% in the last year and 75% in the last five years. Graduate Social Work program enrollments have increased 21.9% in the past year and 58% over the last five years. In the MBA program, enrollments have increased 14% in the last year and 132% over the past five years. By all indications it looks like the 2012-2013 academic year will be another record year for these programs. • CBPA faculty have presented or published over 220 scholarly works in the past year. • Takia McClendon, a current MA student, Geography Department, was invited by Michelle Obama to visit the White House this past year. She was invited based on the work she has done on local sustainable food systems. • Michele Belliveau, Chair, Undergraduate Social Work Department was chosen as Social Worker of the Month in October by the National Association of Social Workers - Pennsylvania . • Dr. Simon Condliffe and Dr. Tom Andrews accompanied undergraduate economics students to the Eastern Economic Association Conference. Students presented their research, served as discussants for papers from students of other universities, and attended the keynote addresses by distinguished economists. • Dr. Stevenson of the Political Science Dept. led a group to the United Nations for a conference on Food Security. The event was promoted by Mayor Carolyn Comitta as well as other departments and colleges on campus. Students met with various ambassadors and officials from the United Nations. • The CBPA Undergraduate Student Advisory Board met throughout the academic year. Students brainstormed on a number of ideas that could help to improve student advising, discussed internship experiences, talked about online education and discussed ways to better integrate the career center services with the departments. • The Cottrell Center hosted a number of entrepreneurs in classes and in large venues. These included: David Gansky, a successful alumnus who has started several businesses, Adam Gripton, CPA, JD who addressed financial reporting for small and startup companies; Howard Lubert, President, Keiretsu Forum Mid-Atlantic who addressed angel funding and introduced a due diligence project to a group of MBA students, and Steven Washington, founder, Philly Home Buyer to address serial entrepreneurship. Presentations were captured and will be used for future courses as well. A n n ual R e por t , F all 2 012
