Where the world of physical therapy meets

Final programme: overview

Version 1, February 2015

Message from the President

The WCPT Congress 2015 will be a unique event. It is an opportunity to share our passion for the profession and to showcase the best of physical therapy from around the world. It will be a congress for every member of the profession giving clinicians, managers, educators, researchers and policy makers the opportunity to engage with each other and to debate and discuss important professional questions. The programme of the WCPT Congress in Singapore will appeal to all physical therapists, from wherever in the world you come and whatever your specific professional interest. Attending a WCPT Congress is a unique experience, providing the chance to exchange ideas and knowledge as a global community. While we come from diverse backgrounds and face a variety of challenges, we have an enormous amount in common, and by meeting together we can find solutions and create opportunities for development. The countdown for the most influential international physical therapy gathering has now begun! I hope that you will embrace the opportunity to extend knowledge, connect with friends and colleagues and strengthen the bonds that hold us together as a profession. I look forward to seeing you all in Singapore at the WCPT Congress 2015.

Welcome to Singapore

It is said that we must never give up dreaming because dreams do come true. That is why we celebrate, with much anticipation, Singapore hosting the WCPT Congress in May this year! While the congress has been held in WCPT’s Asia Western Pacific region before – in Japan in 1999 – this is only the second time that it has come to Asia. Hence, we hope that physical therapists, especially those in our region, will take advantage of the close proximity of the congress and participate in this golden opportunity to learn and share from our collective professional experience. There is so much for you to experience and discover in the little country of which we are so proud. The congress could not be better timed – because this year Singapore celebrates its 50th anniversary and many events have been organised to commemorate this important milestone. We are humbled that a 2014 Bloomberg report ranked Singapore as having the most efficient health care system in the world. High standards of living, education and a focus on preventive medicine have impacted positively on the health status of Singaporeans. Only one in five has a BMI of over 25 and the average life expectancy is 82 years. It has been a steep learning experience for us to arrive at this level, and there are lessons that we can share with you – just as we have much to learn from you in our professional journeys. We invite you to come visit and experience first-hand our clinical health facilities. Of course, the bonus of coming to the congress is also to enjoy the rich cultural diversity Singapore offers in terms of history, festivals, traditions and amazing cuisine. You must try our famous chilli crabs and many local delicacies. Make some time, as well, to visit many of Singapore’s attractions including Gardens by the Bay (the congress party night venue), featuring the world’s largest columnless glass house displaying exotic plants and fauna. Bring your family as well to enjoy the River Safari and your children will love the Universal Studios. We cannot wait to share with you our beautiful Garden City and look forward to the wonderful time we will enjoy at the WCPT Congress 2015. See you in Singapore soon!

An auspicious start

The WCPT Congress 2015 kicks off with the opening ceremony and welcome reception on the evening of Friday 1st May at 6:00 pm. Join fellow delegates at this grand start and prepare to be entertained by acts showcasing the cultural mix that Singapore is uniquely placed to offer. Celebrate with your colleagues as WCPT announces the recipient of the Mildred Elson award, WCPT’s highest honour, and the winners of the awards for outstanding posters. Keynote speaker Goh Ah-Cheng will be the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony. Originally from Singapore Dr Goh is Associate Professor at Shinshu University, Japan. Prior to moving to Japan, he was the Chief Physiotherapist in the Singapore Armed Forces and a past President of the Singapore Physiotherapy Association. Dr Goh is a Colombo Plan Scholar with more than 25 years experience as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist. He qualified as a physiotherapist from Auckland, New Zealand, in 1981, and holds a Masters in Applied Science from the University of Sydney, and a PhD from Curtin University, Australia. ISC Chair Aimée Stewart, International Scientific Committee chair, will take you through the lead-up to the WCPT Congress and inspire you for the days ahead. Aimée’ s wealth of experience has enabled her to shape the congress scientific programme. Her main research areas of interest are the management of chronic diseases including HIV/AIDS, as well as the roles of caregivers and families in rehabilitation. In 2011 she was awarded the South African Department of Science and Technology “Distinguished Women in Science” award.
