Community Action Goals and the Actions Planned to Achieve Them

The tables on the following pages outline the final goals and action items described in Pelican Rapids ' Community Action Plan. The original plan can be found on the City of Pelican Rapids ' website under the "Visitors " tab. It should be noted, however, that the planned actions represent a snapshot in time, as many of them have already been accomplished in the last year. The steering committee will work to update the community action plan as needed.

Community Goal 1

Foster market channels and supply chain relationships for more locally grown, raise, or harvested food to flow within the community.

Planned Actions

Define a space for a physical market in downtown Pelican Rapids Create a comprehensive list of food producers and businesses to foster connections to form future purchasing relationships Host a Healthy Food Fair in partnership/collaboration with an existing community event Create a food systems coordinator position to help advance the Local Foods, Local Places action plan and other initiatives

Community Goal 2

Support food entrepreneurs to start or grow existing businesses in Pelican Rapids and enhance Pelican Rapids ' reputation as a food destination.

Planned Actions

Conduct a commercial kitchen feasibility study to identify the best model, producers, consumers, and purpose. Establish a marketing and branding program for Pelican Rapids food and recreational assets Connect aspiring or early food businesses to existing resources, such as through a food business coordinator or navigator position

Community Goal 3

Grow and culturally diversify the agricultural economy surrounding Pelican Rapids

Planned Actions

Convene goat-farming stakeholders to identify land, technical assistance, grants, and additional resources to remove barriers to raising, processing, and selling goat meat locally. Develop a farmer incubator program with a contact between Northern Plains Sustainable Ag Society and Food Shelf. Advance 2021 representation for Pelican Rapids by briefing staff on the LFLP Planning process and importance of the type of resource represented by Farmlink. Host an informational session on controlled environment agriculture (CEA).

Empower community members with opportunities and resources to better access meaningful food and participate in food systems planning

Planned Actions

Conduct a feasibility study on a community orchard, possibly located on existing city property Conduct extensive public engagement to integrate food language into local planning processes and documents Expand the existing community garden and increase the number of community gardens in neighborhoods
